3. INTRODUCTION
The Koyna Dam is one of the largest dams in
Maharashtra, India.
It is a rubble-concrete dam constructed on Koyna
River which rises in Mahabaleshwar, a hillstation in
Sahyadri ranges.
It is located in Koyna Nagar, Satara district, nestled
in the Western Ghats on the state highway between
Chiplun and Karad.

9. LAKE TAPPING
Lake Tapping – A nonconventional intake system
was created by piercing the lake from the bottom by
blasting the rock plug using dynamite.
Explosive used for the lake tapping were specially
bought from Denmark.

10. LAKE TAPPING (KOYNA)
The first lake tapping was
done successfully in 1999
which produces 65TMC
water
second lake tapping was
done on 26th April 2012
and water rose upto 15 ft
high creating waves.
The process of double
tapping was the first of its

12. EARTHQUAKE: KOYNANAGAR
The Koyna earthquake of December 11, 1967, killed about 200
people and injured a few thousand. and it occured near the the
site of koyna dam
The epicentre was within 5 km of the Koyna Dam
(17° 23′ N., 73° 45′ E.).
The depth of focus of the earthquake has been estimated at
about 30 km.
The earthquake was felt over distances up to 700 km from the
epicentre.
