Letters from Home
By 2LT Bone, Garrison
Throughout the past two months, Delta Battery has been working
extremely hard in support of the mission in the Central Command Area
of Operations (CENTCOM AOR). Luckily, the morale of the Soldiers
remains high, and they are very optimistic in completing the mission
and returning home. Delta Battery continues to remain resilient and
alert at all times throughout day to day operations. Sometimes,
Soldiers do not have a lot of time to stay in contact with family and
loved ones back home due to the up-tempo. However, in spite of all
the difficulties, Soldiers are reminded of the support from back home
when care packages or letters are received.
During the month of June, Delta Battery received multiple care
packages from families and outside organizations who showed support
of our troops. Crew 3 received a complete set a golfing items from
Bunkers in Baghdad with letters from children showing their continued
support of our Soldiers. Also, Delta Battery received copious amounts
of snacks, personal hygiene items, and letters from the Support our
Troops Foundation.
Delta Battery thanks all the families and organizations for the
thoughts, care packages, and support. When separated from home,
even the smallest of gestures can turn a Soldierâs day around and bring
a smile to their face. From all the Soldiers, NCOs, and Officers⊠Thank
you!

This past month, the Soldiers of Delta Battery celebrated the Armyâs 243rd
birthday with a series of morale events. According to the U.S. Army Center of
Military History, the Army was founded on 14 June 1775 when the Continental
Congress authorized enlistment of expert riflemen to serve the United Colonies
for one year. Coincidentally, the Air Defense Artillery Branch shares the same
birthday as the U.S. Army, as it was founded as a basic branch on 14 June 1968 as
noted in the Department of the Army General Orders, No. 25 dated 14 June 1968.
The day started off with a 5K fun-run around the Air Base in the morning. Delta
Battery Soldiers donned Unit T-Shirts with Army shorts to show support of our
current team and the Army as a whole. Awards were given to the fastest overall
3-2 ADA male and fastest 3-2 ADA female with COAs given to the top 10 overall 3-
2 ADA finishers.
At lunch, the Battalion executed a cake-cutting ceremony at Windyâs dining
facility. The cake-cutting ceremony is a long-standing custom in the Army that is
conducted for many different kinds of celebrations. Tradition goes that the oldest
and youngest Soldiers in the unit cut the cake and distribute it to all in
attendance. This is supposed to symbolize the Armyâs ability to continually âroll
onâ as our young Soldiers eventually turn into our senior leaders. This year,
Chaplain Ravenscraft from Headquarters Battery and PV2 Payne from Echo
Company cut the cake.
The day closed out with a barbeque dinner at the Thirsty Camel. All available
personnel headed to the cook-out for freshly grilled hamburgers and hotdogs,
potato salad, and baked beans. Throughout the cookout, Soldiers held corn-hole
tournaments, played cards, or just enjoyed each otherâs company.

Throughout the last quarter, 31st
Air Defense Artillery Brigade (ADA
BDE) went through a wealth of key leader transitions as the brigade
prepared to assume mission in the USCENTCOM AOR as the Top
Notch mission command element. One of those key leader
transitions included a Brigade Change of Command.
31st
ADA BDE consists of three Battalions: 3-2 ADA, 4-3 ADA, and 5-
5 ADA. On 23 May, the brigade said a heartfelt goodbye to COL Janice
Chen and welcomed their new commander, COL Lisa Bartel. The
ceremony, conducted on Fort Sillâs Polo Field, uniquely featured a
casing of the brigade colors due to the fact that the brigadeâs
headquarters were scheduled to deploy just days later to the Middle
East.
During the ceremony, the outgoing commander, COL Janice Chen,
addressed the Archer Brigade one last time stating, âIâm going to
remember how focused, engaged, and ready they are and how
serious they took their missions.â As COL Lisa Bartel took command,
she welcomed the challenge and said, âI feel truly privileged and
humbled to command the fine Soldiers of this formation and will do
my best to live up to the expectations that come with it.â
On 12 June, after deploying into theater and conducting their Relief
in Place (RIP), 31st
ADA BDE conducted a Transfer of Authority (TOA)
with 11th
ADA BDE to assume responsibility as the âTop Notchâ
mission command element in charge of all US Army Air and Missile
Defense forces in the USCENTCOM AOR.

This month, COL Lisa Bartel visited Delta Batteryâs PATSITE for a
guided tour in order to achieve understanding of the complexity of
the batteryâs mission and status of operational readiness. Since
taking command in May, this was the first time that COL Bartel was
able to meet the Soldiers of Delta Battery and communicate with
them face-to-face.
For the Soldiers, it was an opportunity to show their new Brigade
Commander and incoming Top Notch Commander how the Death
Dealer Battery takes on challenges and accomplishes the mission. 1LT
Neddermeyer, AMD Crew 1 Tactical Control Officer and Site OIC, and
SGT Kashinsky, AMD Crew 1 Hot Crew NCO and Site NCOIC, had the
privilege of leading COL Bartel and COL Gipson through the PATSITE.
The brief started out at the battery sand-table where 1LT
Neddermeyer and SGT Kashinsky oriented the distinguished visitors
to the layout of the PATSITE and briefed them on batteryâs primary
mission, current alert state, and interceptor load-out. Following the
sand-table brief, COL Bartel and COL Gipson were led to each crew
battle-station where they received briefs by the Soldiers on their
primary roles and responsibilities, current equipment readiness, and
the importance of each Soldier understanding the dual-mission set
and how to react in the event of a transition to a higher alert state.
The visit also presented the opportunity for the Soldiers to say
goodbye to COL Gipson, the outgoing Top Notch Commander. The
battery thanks him for all of the hard work and mentorship he
provided to us in the first few months that we were in theater. As a
token of the batteryâs appreciation, at the end of the tour, the
Soldiers and leaders presented him with a United States flag that had
been flown for 30-days over the PATSITE on one of our Launching
Stations. Good luck and best wishes to 11th BDE! We welcome 31st
BDE to the fight!

The Soldiers of the battery continue to impress me with their diligence, discipline, and ability
to produce results in a task-saturated environment. As the battery rounds the middle of 4th
quarter, leaders work to balance our Air and Missile Defense training with the execution of
battle-rhythm tasks and reaction to unexpected events: all while continuing to plan for a
wealth of future missions. Busy, it seems, is the new normal! However, as we near our mid-
tour point, the Soldiers will require and appreciate your support more than ever as we fight off
complacency and continue to execute our mission with violence of action. Thank you to the
friends and families who have supported us thus far! It means more than you know. Ready
and Vigilant! Lethal Strike! Kill âEm All!
