KINETIC ARCHITECTURE CONCEPT IS THE
DESIGN OF BUILDINGS WITH
TRANSFORMATIVE AND AUTOMATIC
ELEMENTS.
THE BUILDINGS SHAPE IS CHANGED TO
MATCH THE PEOPLE REQUIREMENTS AND
ADAPT TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS.
THERE ARE VARIOUS APPLICATIONS OF
KINETIC SYSTEMS IN ARCHITECTURE. THE
PAPER PRESENTS THEM IN THREE MAIN

3. KINETIC GLASS IS A RESPONSIVE SURFACE THAT
REACTS TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND
CHANGES SHAPE VIA CURLING OR OPENING AND
CLOSING GILLS. THE SURFACE IS THIN,
LIGHTWEIGHT, AND TRANSPARENT WITH NO
MOTORS OR MECHANICAL PARTS.
THE SYSTEM MAY BE USED WITH A VARIETY OF
SWITCHES OR SENSORS AND CONTROLLED VIA
MICROPROCESSORS AND COMPLEX ALGORITHMS,
ALLOWING ONE TO PERFORM A VARIETY OF
APPLICATIONS.
THE SYSTEM CAN DETECT UNHEALTHY LEVELS OF
CARBON DIOXIDE IN INTERIOR SPACES. KINETIC
GLASS “BREATHES” WHEN HIGH LEVELS ARE

SIGNALING THE PROBLEM TO BUILDING
OCCUPANTS.

4. A KINETIC FAÇADE IS ONE THAT CHANGES
DYNAMICALLY RATHER THAN BEING STATIC OR
FIXED, ALLOWING MOVEMENT TO OCCUR ON A
BUILDING’S SURFACE.
A KINETIC FAÇADE CAN BE USED TO MANAGE LIGHT,
AIR, ENERGY, AND EVEN INFORMATION. THEY CAN
ACT TO REDUCE SOLAR GAIN AS WELL AS
ALLOWING THE PASSAGE OF FRESH AIR INTO THE
BUILDING, HELPING TO ALTER THE INTERIOR
ENVIRONMENT.
THE MOVING ELEMENTS OF THE FAÇADE CAN BE
PROGRAMMED TO RESPOND TO CLIMATIC OR OTHER
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, TIME, LEVELS AND TYPE
OF OCCUPANCY AND SO ON TO IMPROVE
PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY.

THIS FEATURE RENDERS A ROOF AS AN 'ENTITY', A
'SHIELD' THAT PROTECTS FROM THE WEATHER AND
OTHER HARMFUL ELEMENTS. IN THIS NATURE, IT IS
RARELY SOMETHING TRANSFORMABLE.
TODAY STADIUMS, THEATERS AND GOVERNMENT
BUILDINGS ARE THE MOST COMMON EXAMPLES
WITH TRANSFORMABLE ROOFS.
THE TECHNIQUES USED ARE: SLIDING LINEAR.
IN THE QI ZHONG STADIUM PROJECT BY MITSURU
SENDA THE ROOF OPENS UP LIKE A LOTUS FLOWER.
TENSILE. THIS IS THE OLDEST PRINCIPLE REGARDING
TRANSFORMABLE ROOFS AND IT IS APPLIED IN ALL
SCALE RANGE. IT EXHIBITS A LOT MORE FLEXIBILITY
THAN THE PREVIOUS CLASSES BUT IT IS MUCH
HARDER TO PROCURE THE PROPER FORCE TO KEEP
THE FABRIC EFFECTIVELY TENSIONED.
