2. Putrefaction
• Putrefaction is the disintegration of body tissues
after death which follows disappearance of rigor
mortis.
• It has 3 characteristic features:
1. Colour changes in tissues
2. Evolution of gases in tissues
3. Liquefaction of tissues
3. Liquefaction of tissues
• It begins from-10 days after death.
• The abdomen bursts and intestines protrude.
• In children , thorax also bursts.
• The tissues become soft, loose and converted into
semifluid mass.
• The cartilage ligaments are softened and ultimately
bones are destroyed.
4. Order of putrefaction
• Various organs putrefy at different rates
depending on their structure , vascularit and
access of air and bacteria.
• Muscular organs and those made of fibrous
tissue resist putrefaction.
• Parenchymatous organs easily decompose.
• Order in which putrefactive changes take place:
Larynx , stomach and intestine , liver and lungs , brain ,
heart , prostate and uterus.
5. Conditions affecting putrefaction
• Temperature : High in temperature between 21-38 degree
Celsius.
• Moisture : drying arrests putrefaction.
• Clothing : Hastens putrefaction
• Condition of body : Fatty bodies decompose faster
• Cause of death :
1. Bodies dying from septicemia decompose rapidly.
2. Clostridium Welchi infection leads to rapid putrefaction.
3. Poisons like strychnine and carbolic acid delay putrefaction.
