Content Based Teaching strategies (Science)
Presented by: Saherish Aqib
Subject Specialist (Science)
After attending the session the participants will be able
to:
• enlist the “teaching methodologies” to teach subject.
• define the term (Content-Based Instructions “CBI”).
• incorporate effective teaching strategies to teach
Science contents at primary and elementary levels.
Ice Breaker
Tell about your favourite subject
and best teaching memory.
WHAT IS CONTENT-BASED
INSTRUCTION?
How do you teach science
in your class? Can you name
some teaching methods?
Current innovative teaching methods to
teach the subject of Science
1. Hands on Learning 7. Mini-labs
2. Science Text Cards 8. Science kit
3. Argue with Science 9. Peer-to-Peer
Teaching
4. Context-Based
Learning
10. Field Trips
5. Remote Labs 11. Science at home
6. Projects 12. Build your model
Effective Teaching Strategies to
deliver CBI in Science Subject
Hands-on-Learning:
Learning by doing is known as “Hands-
on-Learning.
Activity
Let test the quality of the egg.
• Text cards is a good strategy to help students
look at the word and understand the meaning of
it. This is a science vocabulary strategy that helps
students identify a concept and put a meaning
with it.
• Students can work individually, pairs or in groups
to sort the cards based on the given format. The
formats include true / false, agree / disagree,
matching pairs, classification, sequencing and
more.
Science Text Cards:
Activity
Let’s solve the given science
text cards.
Look at the picture below. Is
heat being added to the ice or
being removed?
Look at the picture below. As
heat is being added, what is
happening to the water that is
escaping?
What will happen to the water if
it is left in the sun for an
extended amount of time?
Finish the expression below.
Finish the expression below.Finish the expression below.
Look at the picture below. What
state of matter is this ice cube?
Look at the arrow on the picture
below. What process is taking
place?
A scientific argument is defined as people
disagreeing about scientific explanations
using (evidence) to justify their side of
the argument. A scientific argument is a
process that scientists follow to guide their
research activities.
Argue with Science
How does dengue fever
occur?
Activity for You
Activity:
Yeast Experiment: Is it Alive?!
What You Need:
3 little pouches, or 3 teaspoons, of
dry yeast
Magnifying glass
3 plastic zip-top bags
¼ cup of lukewarm water
2 teaspoons sugar
CBL, refers to the use of real-life and
fictitious examples in teaching
environments in order to learn through
the actual, practical experience with a
subject rather than just its mere
theoretical parts.
Context-based Learning Method
Activity
Plants breathe
Activity
3 R’s
A lab in every pocket is called “remote lab”. e.g. a
mobile phone is a remote mini computer. Similarly our
classroom resources are our remote mini scientific lab.
Remote Lab Method
In this strategy pupils perform constructive activities in
natural condition. A project is a list of real life that has been
imparted into the school. It demands work from the pupils.
When students pass-through this kind of learning, they
improve their skills to express ideas, problem solving,
overcoming the challenges, team work and self assessment.
Project Method
Activity for You
•Make a glass projector in class
with the help of given resources.
•Make a stethoscope with the help
of given resources.
Peer teaching can either be defined by the relationship
between teacher and student. Peer education is a term
widely used to describe a range of advantages where young
people from a similar age group, background, culture and/or
social status educate and inform each other about a wide
variety of issues.
Peer-to-Peer Teaching Method
Activity
Let measure the volume of the
given liquids with the help of
measuring cylinders.
In the middle of boring classroom sessions, take your students
out for field trips to experience science while learning. Go to an
aquarium, a nature centre, a science museum, or visit a pet store.
You can also spend sometime with the students in the bird park
or simple go on a nature walk to experience the science around
while learning new concepts.
Field Trips Method
Activity
Go outside to collect different kinds
of leaves and paste them in your
notebook. Describe them briefly.

  1. The objectives of the today’s sessions are:
  2. So,
  3. According to my opinion here is an answer for you.
  4. Today, we will discuss about:
  5. The goal of this activity is to generate discussion among student groups about a specific topic or content area.
  6. To deliver the content-base instructions we have to focus on these points:
  7. So……… You can conduct active learning at Individual level in the form of:
