• RESONUT (SUN Civil Society Alliance in Burkina Faso) contributes to the nutrition situation analysis for
Burkina Faso multi-stakeholder effort & ensure nutrition commitments are integrated
• RESONUT is contracting consultants to lead on nutrition budget analysis work in alignment with government
efforts & to inform advocacy for increased investments in nutrition
• RESONUT started working with MPs in March/April before the examination of the Finance Act (in April), to
ensure there is a significant amount / percentage of budget allocated to nutrition in the 2017 national
budget.
• Advocacy note on nutrition related issues (financing, coordination... ) to the President of the National
Assembly and to the Minister of Economy, Finance and Development
• RESONUT worked with the United Nations Network for Nutrition and civil society members to promote the
integration of nutrition into the new Burkina Faso's development strategic document : Economic and Social
Development Plan (PNDES 2016-2020)
• Training of members on public policies and budget (related to nutrition) monitoring and analysis (SUN
Methodology and sharing experiences with the Collective All United for Nutrition (TUN) from Niger

Accountability
• RESONUT continues to track progress made on nutrition commitments (including Nutrition for Growth and
WHA)
• RESONUT contributes to a West Africa Civil Society Declaration calling for increased investment in nutrition,
SMART commitments and accountability and making CS commitments. The declaration is being use for WHA
and African Development Bank advocacy efforts.
• RESONUT continues to track progress made on nutrition commitments (including Nutrition for Growth and
WHA)
• RESONUT will soon launch studies on: Existing types of multi-sectoral anchorage and functionality ; and on
Existing accountability mechanisms in the health sector in Burkina Faso;
• RESONUT contributes to a West Africa Civil Society Declaration calling for increased investment in nutrition,
SMART commitments and accountability and making CS commitments – cf later in presentation.
• RESONUT participates to the joint assessment of progress in 2015 (SUN Burkina Faso Platform)
Parliamentarian champions
• In Burkina Faso a parliamentary network for nutrition is under construction was created, with support from
RESONUT. Several contacts have already been made, especially towards already existing MP networks
(women and development, water and sanitation). The network regulations are currently under development
and a plan of actions have recently been developed, under the direction of the Deputy GNOUMOU Dissa
Boureima.

• Meetings engaging various actors around advocacy efforts to get SMART financial and political commitments
and Rio attendance resulted in commitments to actively participate in efforts in the build up to Rio through
a coalition (CONASAN, MINSAL, technical secretary within the president’s office, UNICEF, FAO, INCAP,
WHO/PAHO, CALMA, consultants ).

• CSA holds government to account on not progressing / achieving the WHA targets
Budget analysis and advocacy for increased investment
• Budget tracking workshop with parliamentarians held in Malawi - breaking nutrition budget down to
community level.
• CSONA to conduct rapid budget analysis – 2 week window as soon as budget released to be able to review
and track what has been allocated.
• CSA coordinator presents and advocates at World Bank Spring meeting.
Parliamentarian champions
• A dynamic parliamentarian group for food and nutrition is present in Malawi. The civil society organisation
for nutrition action (CSONA) has been working closely with the group to inform them of the nutrition
situation in Malawi and through undertaking analysis of budgets for nutrition. CSONA has engaged MPs in
two fact finding missions on nutrition and organised training for MPs on budget analysis and tracking in
partnership with Save the Children International and Graca Machel Trust (GMT).
• Parliamentarians keen to know how money breaks down at community level.
• 13 MPs have signed pledges to champion Nutrition in advance of the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the signed
pledges were published in national press.

• The Advocacy Campaign
– Targets decision makers
– Focus - nutrition is a key factor for the wellbeing of the child and society/community

• As part of their advocacy campaigns the alliance has met with parliamentarian commissions for Planning
and Budget & Social affairs, Gender, Technology and social communication respectively. They have also
planned meetings with commissions for Agriculture, Economy and Environment, the Cabinet of
Parliamentarian Women and Cabinet of Parliamentarian Youth). In addition, the alliance has met with key
Ministries such as Health, Education, Youth and Sport, and National Institute for Social affairs as well as the
First lady Cabinet.
• Face to face meetings with parliamentarians, ministries, and First Lady calling for nutrition budgeting and
tracking and government high level participation at Rio 2016
• MoH launching end of May (26th) strategy for behaviour change communication

• SUN CSA Pk advocates in various forums - a meeting to discuss a multisectoral strategy for nutrition; a
national conference on nutrition sensitive agriculture; at provincial level in Balochistan where rates of
malnutrition are high
• In process of conducting policy landscape analysis in Pakistan to prepare policy briefs.
• The minister of planning has committed 100 million rupees per year for nutrition. The aim is to have a
commitment of 500 million per year.
• Local government of Balochistan recognises nutrition, food security and DRR as a priority and commits
more financial resources

• The civil society alliance has registered considerable interest from parliamentarians in their work. They have

• IDI conducts large campaign & advocacy efforts (workshops, meetings with ministers and vice-
ministers,...) targeting politicians and political parties, mobilising citizens to make specific
nutrition asks and demand for SMART and accountable commitments from government
• Impact so far
– Congress candidates sign commitments to fight childhood malnutrition
– Citizens call for the president to sign a commitment for childhood malnutrition
– IDI secures nutrition commitments from 7 of 9 candidates (2 of which are leads in the second round)
in advance of 2016 national elections and now hopes to reach out to regional governors and sub-
national government to demonstrate the groundswell of public support for improving nutrition in Peru
and maintaining the gains the country has made.

Advocacy for nutrition prioritisation
• Working with the Office of the Prime Minister to support the development of a secretariat to improve
multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral coordination for nutrition in Rwanda. Impact: The secretariat was
established under a cabinet decision a few weeks ago and will be coordinated by the Ministry of Local
Government.
• SFH Rwanda in collaboration with the SUN Alliance contracted key artists in the country such as; award
winners, film actors, media and Miss Rwanda 2016. These have accepted to work with both organisations
for a period of one year as nutrition champions. Impact: These have so far been invited to open dialogues to
share their views on nutrition.
• Actively organising events and meetings with different stakeholders - policy makers, donors, government
agencies, MPs & Minister of agriculture, MoH, Ministry of Local Government etc... to raise nutrition as a
priority and advocate for increased investment. Impact: Community consultation is underway on issues of
nutrition.
Rwanda

Parliamentarian champions
The SUN Alliance in Rwanda has been working to organize parliamentary hearings and policy makers
engagement on the theme of nutrition for health, the nutrition situation and needed actions. The first public
session took place in the Chamber of Deputies on March 15, 2016. The Alliance also continues its advocacy for
increased investment for nutrition and tracking of results. This is backed by a series of workshops at provincial
levels engaging all decision makers in a province is made up of Six districts.

• The SUN Civil Society Alliance in Senegal is going to work closely with the health commission in link ahead of
the vote of the 2017 budget.

• In Senegal, a few Members of the Parliament got involved in budget advocacy for nutrition. In 2015,
members of the national assembly health commission undertook a study of the budgetary lines within the
2013-2015 national budgets that are dedicated to nutrition sensitive and specific interventions. Dr Mame
Gueye Dione, Vice President of this commission, is very active and had the opportunity to present the results
of the budget analysis and to discuss nutrition advocacy with the civil society during a regional conference on
undernutrition in West Africa that was organized by Action Against Hunger last June, in Dakar.

• The HAN-SL has reached out to parliamentarians in their advocacy work. They are currently working on
encouraging the new national constitution includes the right to food and recently supported the country’s
first food and nutrition fair.

Resulting in - Media houses offered free TV and Radio slots including: 6 TV slots, (AYV, SLBC TV) and Radio programmes/
interviews and 3 newspaper publications on the Health and Nutrition Fair.
– During the event - Live radio coverage for the 3 days, Float Parade: live broadcast on 2 radio stations ( VOI and Freetown
Radio), Live interviews broadcasted in 6 partner stations, set up of a mini studio at the Fair to conduct Panel interviews
of experts (on nutrition, health, immunization) and members of the public to broadcasted live.
– “Good Nutrition: Key For a Healthy Nation” video
• National Health and Nutrition Fair 2016 a 3 day event 29 April -1 May designed to showcase interventions
by Govt, CSOs, UN and business partners to end hunger and malnutrition and improve health outcomes in

Calling for commitments and increased investments
• Joint statement given by the Civil Societies Organisation under the umbrella of
the Partnership For Nutrition In Tanzania (PANITA) on 6th April 2016 Calls for
government, on the road to Rio, to increase domestic spending on Nutrition
interventions based on the estimated cost of $8.5 per child to reach the WHA
targets by 2025, and participate in the upcoming Rio summit and pledge for
increased political commitment for sustainable leadership and provision of
resources from its domestic sources as this is necessary for improved nutrition
status of the country
• Champion Graca Machel meets with VP to highlight importance of nutrition to
new government
• PANITA Conducted outreach meetings to key government officials in support
of the Rio pledge (Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender,
Children and Elderly; Deputy Minister for Information Culture, arts and Sports;

• PANITA also organized the Deputy Speaker as a means of pushing for Rio Pledge , it was also an opportunity
to highlight the country Nutrition situation and the deputy speaker promised to also push for increased
resources for Nutrition
Raising nutrition profile in Tanzania
• Launches a journalists competition for 3 months to incentivise more focus on nutrition and resource
mobilisation - PANITA Journalists excellence in reporting on nutrition
Budget tracking at sub-national level
• PANITA will build on efforts previously conducted on tracking nutrition funds at the local level to inform
advocacy efforts.
Parliamentarians
• PANITA has been working extensively with parliamentarians. They assisted in the creation of a
parliamentarian group and supported their development of a manifesto for nutrition in the country. With
the change of government the group is being reinvigorated to keep nutrition a non-partisan issue.
• PANITA plans to work with parliamentarians around Rio commitment sand budget issues. So far PANITA
organized a meeting with members of the parliament which was mainly aiming at discussing the post-
election engagement but also to garner support from them on the forth coming Rio Pledge

Burkina Faso Progress & Impact Budget and situation analysis & Advocacy for increased investment for nutrition • RESONUT (SUN Civil Society Alliance in Burkina Faso) contributes to the nutrition situation analysis for Burkina Faso multi-stakeholder effort & ensure nutrition commitments are integrated • RESONUT is contracting consultants to lead on nutrition budget analysis work in alignment with government efforts & to inform advocacy for increased investments in nutrition • RESONUT started working with MPs in March/April before the examination of the Finance Act (in April), to ensure there is a significant amount / percentage of budget allocated to nutrition in the 2017 national budget. • Advocacy note on nutrition related issues (financing, coordination... ) to the President of the National Assembly and to the Minister of Economy, Finance and Development • RESONUT worked with the United Nations Network for Nutrition and civil society members to promote the integration of nutrition into the new Burkina Faso's development strategic document : Economic and Social Development Plan (PNDES 2016-2020) • Training of members on public policies and budget (related to nutrition) monitoring and analysis (SUN Methodology and sharing experiences with the Collective All United for Nutrition (TUN) from Niger Public mobilization • A song and a video clip to mobilize the general public on stakes in Nutrition are in production • RESONUT published a press release on the United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition

Burkina Faso Progress & Impact Accountability • RESONUT continues to track progress made on nutrition commitments (including Nutrition for Growth and WHA) • RESONUT contributes to a West Africa Civil Society Declaration calling for increased investment in nutrition, SMART commitments and accountability and making CS commitments. The declaration is being use for WHA and African Development Bank advocacy efforts. • RESONUT continues to track progress made on nutrition commitments (including Nutrition for Growth and WHA) • RESONUT will soon launch studies on: Existing types of multi-sectoral anchorage and functionality ; and on Existing accountability mechanisms in the health sector in Burkina Faso; • RESONUT contributes to a West Africa Civil Society Declaration calling for increased investment in nutrition, SMART commitments and accountability and making CS commitments – cf later in presentation. • RESONUT participates to the joint assessment of progress in 2015 (SUN Burkina Faso Platform) Parliamentarian champions • In Burkina Faso a parliamentary network for nutrition is under construction was created, with support from RESONUT. Several contacts have already been made, especially towards already existing MP networks (women and development, water and sanitation). The network regulations are currently under development and a plan of actions have recently been developed, under the direction of the Deputy GNOUMOU Dissa Boureima.

Malawi Progress & Impact Accountability • CSA holds government to account on not progressing / achieving the WHA targets Budget analysis and advocacy for increased investment • Budget tracking workshop with parliamentarians held in Malawi - breaking nutrition budget down to community level. • CSONA to conduct rapid budget analysis – 2 week window as soon as budget released to be able to review and track what has been allocated. • CSA coordinator presents and advocates at World Bank Spring meeting. Parliamentarian champions • A dynamic parliamentarian group for food and nutrition is present in Malawi. The civil society organisation for nutrition action (CSONA) has been working closely with the group to inform them of the nutrition situation in Malawi and through undertaking analysis of budgets for nutrition. CSONA has engaged MPs in two fact finding missions on nutrition and organised training for MPs on budget analysis and tracking in partnership with Save the Children International and Graca Machel Trust (GMT). • Parliamentarians keen to know how money breaks down at community level. • 13 MPs have signed pledges to champion Nutrition in advance of the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the signed pledges were published in national press.

Mozambique Progress & Impact Accountability and advocacy for nutrition prioritisation & increased investment • The Advocacy Campaign – Targets decision makers – Focus - nutrition is a key factor for the wellbeing of the child and society/community – 6 areas - Infant, pregnant women, health, Education, Gender – early marriage and early pregnancy, and Development/economy • As part of their advocacy campaigns the alliance has met with parliamentarian commissions for Planning and Budget & Social affairs, Gender, Technology and social communication respectively. They have also planned meetings with commissions for Agriculture, Economy and Environment, the Cabinet of Parliamentarian Women and Cabinet of Parliamentarian Youth). In addition, the alliance has met with key Ministries such as Health, Education, Youth and Sport, and National Institute for Social affairs as well as the First lady Cabinet. • Face to face meetings with parliamentarians, ministries, and First Lady calling for nutrition budgeting and tracking and government high level participation at Rio 2016 • MoH launching end of May (26th) strategy for behaviour change communication • TV spots, posters, ads, digital tools for raising awareness on importance of nutrition and nutrition investment • Planning meetings have been held at both national and provincial level in order to advance commitment and action this year

Pakistan Progress & Impact Budget and situation analysis & Advocacy for increased investment for nutrition • SUN CSA Pk advocates in various forums - a meeting to discuss a multisectoral strategy for nutrition; a national conference on nutrition sensitive agriculture; at provincial level in Balochistan where rates of malnutrition are high • In process of conducting policy landscape analysis in Pakistan to prepare policy briefs. • The minister of planning has committed 100 million rupees per year for nutrition. The aim is to have a commitment of 500 million per year. • Local government of Balochistan recognises nutrition, food security and DRR as a priority and commits more financial resources • Budget analysis to track spending on nutrition is in process Accountability • CSA members met prime minister – PM very interested to allocate resources for nutrition and decided to set up a cell to look after monitoring of SDGs and nutrition activities as well as tracking nutrition spending and allocation

Pakistan Progress & Impact Other advocacy efforts • CSA also builds capacity of CSOs to advocate effectively - adapting the CSN tool kit • Production of 3 TV talk shows, 10 radio programs and 10 newspaper supplements/pieces & social media campaign to Generate Public debate on the impact of malnutrition underway • Conducted training need assessment of CSA member organizations and started trainings of CSOs on nutrition advocacy skills Accountability • CSA members met prime minister – PM very interested to allocate resources for nutrition and decided to set up a cell to look after monitoring of SDGs and nutrition activities as well as tracking nutrition spending and allocation Parliamentarian champions • The civil society alliance has registered considerable interest from parliamentarians in their work. They have a relationship with the Meeting with the speaker for parliament Rahila Rahmid. Their work involves national representatives of government as well as regional province based political representatives.

Peru Progress & Impact Advocacy for commitments and sustained nutrition prioritisation • IDI conducts large campaign & advocacy efforts (workshops, meetings with ministers and vice- ministers,...) targeting politicians and political parties, mobilising citizens to make specific nutrition asks and demand for SMART and accountable commitments from government • Impact so far – Congress candidates sign commitments to fight childhood malnutrition – Citizens call for the president to sign a commitment for childhood malnutrition – IDI secures nutrition commitments from 7 of 9 candidates (2 of which are leads in the second round) in advance of 2016 national elections and now hopes to reach out to regional governors and sub- national government to demonstrate the groundswell of public support for improving nutrition in Peru and maintaining the gains the country has made. • More can be found here. – workshop with regional governors who are already supporting interventions with candidates so they can feel there is pressure from sub-national governments – a big public campaign via social media and in press and radio – Preparing with the MoH to support resolutions at the WHA

Rwanda Progress & Impact Advocacy for nutrition prioritisation • Working with the Office of the Prime Minister to support the development of a secretariat to improve multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral coordination for nutrition in Rwanda. Impact: The secretariat was established under a cabinet decision a few weeks ago and will be coordinated by the Ministry of Local Government. • SFH Rwanda in collaboration with the SUN Alliance contracted key artists in the country such as; award winners, film actors, media and Miss Rwanda 2016. These have accepted to work with both organisations for a period of one year as nutrition champions. Impact: These have so far been invited to open dialogues to share their views on nutrition. • Actively organising events and meetings with different stakeholders - policy makers, donors, government agencies, MPs & Minister of agriculture, MoH, Ministry of Local Government etc... to raise nutrition as a priority and advocate for increased investment. Impact: Community consultation is underway on issues of nutrition.

Rwanda Progress & Impact Parliamentarian champions The SUN Alliance in Rwanda has been working to organize parliamentary hearings and policy makers engagement on the theme of nutrition for health, the nutrition situation and needed actions. The first public session took place in the Chamber of Deputies on March 15, 2016. The Alliance also continues its advocacy for increased investment for nutrition and tracking of results. This is backed by a series of workshops at provincial levels engaging all decision makers in a province is made up of Six districts.

Senegal Progress & Impact Budget and situation analysis & Advocacy for increased investment for nutrition • Budget analysis and dialogue with government planned • The SUN Civil Society Alliance in Senegal is going to work closely with the health commission in link ahead of the vote of the 2017 budget. • Improving nutrition advocacy through cross-learning • Working with local authorities and elected local officials. • Fact finding mission with parliamentarians. • Running a nutrition caravan to visit communities and encourage public mobilisation. Parliamentarian champions • In Senegal, a few Members of the Parliament got involved in budget advocacy for nutrition. In 2015, members of the national assembly health commission undertook a study of the budgetary lines within the 2013-2015 national budgets that are dedicated to nutrition sensitive and specific interventions. Dr Mame Gueye Dione, Vice President of this commission, is very active and had the opportunity to present the results of the budget analysis and to discuss nutrition advocacy with the civil society during a regional conference on undernutrition in West Africa that was organized by Action Against Hunger last June, in Dakar.

Tanzania Progress & Impact Calling for commitments and increased investments • Joint statement given by the Civil Societies Organisation under the umbrella of the Partnership For Nutrition In Tanzania (PANITA) on 6th April 2016 Calls for government, on the road to Rio, to increase domestic spending on Nutrition interventions based on the estimated cost of $8.5 per child to reach the WHA targets by 2025, and participate in the upcoming Rio summit and pledge for increased political commitment for sustainable leadership and provision of resources from its domestic sources as this is necessary for improved nutrition status of the country • Champion Graca Machel meets with VP to highlight importance of nutrition to new government • PANITA Conducted outreach meetings to key government officials in support of the Rio pledge (Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Children and Elderly; Deputy Minister for Information Culture, arts and Sports; Deputy Minister Education, technology and vocational; Minister for PMO- Policy coordination and Parliamentary Affairs) resulting in a promise to encourage government to attend Rio N4G PANITA secretariat with members of PGNFSCR during the meeting held at Pius Msekwa Hall Dodoma, on 08th June 2016. “Courtesy call” PANITA at the Deputy Speaker’s office advocating for high level governmental presence at the Nutrition for Growth summit II in Rio de janeiro Brazil in August 2016. Tanzania Progress & Impact • PANITA also organized the Deputy Speaker as a means of pushing for Rio Pledge , it was also an opportunity to highlight the country Nutrition situation and the deputy speaker promised to also push for increased resources for Nutrition Raising nutrition profile in Tanzania • Launches a journalists competition for 3 months to incentivise more focus on nutrition and resource mobilisation - PANITA Journalists excellence in reporting on nutrition Budget tracking at sub-national level • PANITA will build on efforts previously conducted on tracking nutrition funds at the local level to inform advocacy efforts. Parliamentarians • PANITA has been working extensively with parliamentarians. They assisted in the creation of a parliamentarian group and supported their development of a manifesto for nutrition in the country. With the change of government the group is being reinvigorated to keep nutrition a non-partisan issue. • PANITA plans to work with parliamentarians around Rio commitment sand budget issues. So far PANITA organized a meeting with members of the parliament which was mainly aiming at discussing the post- election engagement but also to garner support from them on the forth coming Rio Pledge
