Correct use of social skills and assessments

Social skills are the skills we use everyday
to interact and communicate with others.
They include verbal and non-verbal
communication, such as speech, gesture,
facial expression and body language.
1.Attention and concentration
2.Receptive (understanding) language
3.Expressive (using) language
4.Play skills
5.Pre-language skills
6.Self regulation
7.Executive functioning
8.Planning and sequencing
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SOCIAL
COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS
ASSESSMENT?
During a social communication and social skills
assessment we would assess
 how a child or young person interacts with others
 deals with social situations
how they perceive social situations.
 Assessing these areas help to understand where
any challenging areas for an individual.
 The PEERS program
assessment is based on a,
1. A multiple-choice questionnaire
for testing knowledge of social
skills,
2. A quality of social skills
questionnaire for the students
and parents,
3. self-report of outside group
practice exercises.
 Tony Attwood has a useful observation
tool for real-time assessment.
 The observation checklist includes
friendship skills such as
 recognizing cues to enter a
conversation
 giving an appropriate greeting,
accepting suggestions, and
cooperating
ACE
Assessment of comprehension and
expression provides information about
 language ability and measures
 verbal comprehension
 Expression
 Grammar knowledge
 semantic knowledge
 pragmatic knowledge

Autism diagnostic
observation schedule can
be used to identify autistic
spectrum conditions (ASC) with a
range of language abilities.
It looks at;
 communication,
social interaction,
play,
Restricted behavior
 repetitive behavior

Autism diagnostic interview -
revised is a clinical interview
used with
parents, careers and young
people
 it investigates
language and communication
 reciprocal social interactions,
restricted, repetitive and
stereotyped behaviors and
interests

social inference test can
be used from age 14 and
measures
emotion evaluation and
social inference

Social skills improvement system helps to measure;
 communication,
 co-operation,

 responsibility,

  • 3. Social skills are the skills we use everyday to interact and communicate with others. They include verbal and non-verbal communication, such as speech, gesture, facial expression and body language.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS ASSESSMENT? During a social communication and social skills assessment we would assess  how a child or young person interacts with others  deals with social situations how they perceive social situations.  Assessing these areas help to understand where any challenging areas for an individual.
  • 6.  The PEERS program assessment is based on a, 1. A multiple-choice questionnaire for testing knowledge of social skills, 2. A quality of social skills questionnaire for the students and parents, 3. self-report of outside group practice exercises.

  • 13. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS ASSESSMENT? Following a social communication and social skills assessment we would highlight areas of strength and needs. We would also be able to make recommendations for the future, including interventions, onwards referral and strategies.
