Live paint overs and feedback
To address the
complexity of giving written feedback for image based work, and
Describing digital drawing techniques (example even simple ones)
 Fast and specific feedback and advice
 Initially this was done by taking an image and making notes over the top of the
image and adding voice recordings. Whilst this meant that the key points would
be identified, little detail that could be explained and live process could be not
shown.
Live paint overs and feedback
 Using Recording software
 This approach has 2 main benefits
 I can digitally paint a layer over the submitted student work to
demonstrate how they can improve or correct a key concept and
techniques e.g. indicating an eye pathway or correcting a tangent
within an image.
 This can also be a demonstration of how to use of tools to achieve
specific tasks.
Live paint overs and feedback
Often students need clarity on the same aspects of a process. Keeping a
small library of feedback will help reduce the time taken to respond
This would not replace a personal response but to refer students to relevant
examples.
Reflective use. A record of the responses would help identify areas where
students need clarity and could be used to improve the delivery of aspects
of the teaching.

 Audio feedback notes (from Colin Ponds and Anne Doncaster audio
feedback LTA project).
 student liked a non scripted response, so don’t mind the odd pause
or background noise.
 You don’t have to edit the video or sound file.
 Student feedback has been Positive.
ONLINE SCREENCASTING
SOFTWARE FOR SHU STAFF
 SCREENCAST O MATIC
 SHU now has online screen recording facilities for staff use. Staff can use it in or out of SHU
including on their own equipment.
 We have a URL with a capacity of 1000 unique devices connecting per month. The licensing
‘sticks’ to and counts against our entitlement for a month for each unique device it is used from
(no matter how much or how little it is used).
 It is accessed as below: The button to click is ‘Start Recording’. (We don’t currently have the Pro
Tools application installed in SHU. It isn’t necessary to use the online service.)

 File sizes.15 Minuets of content Can be around 30 MB
 A Simple solution would be to limit responses so 3,5 minuets files
could be sent in 3 e-mails.
 Drop box and Google drive could offer further solutions.

  • 2. Live paint overs and feedback To address the complexity of giving written feedback for image based work, and Describing digital drawing techniques (example even simple ones)  Fast and specific feedback and advice
  • 3.  Initially this was done by taking an image and making notes over the top of the image and adding voice recordings. Whilst this meant that the key points would be identified, little detail that could be explained and live process could be not shown.
  • 4. Live paint overs and feedback  Using Recording software  This approach has 2 main benefits  I can digitally paint a layer over the submitted student work to demonstrate how they can improve or correct a key concept and techniques e.g. indicating an eye pathway or correcting a tangent within an image.  This can also be a demonstration of how to use of tools to achieve specific tasks.

  • 6. Live paint overs and feedback Often students need clarity on the same aspects of a process. Keeping a small library of feedback will help reduce the time taken to respond This would not replace a personal response but to refer students to relevant examples. Reflective use. A record of the responses would help identify areas where students need clarity and could be used to improve the delivery of aspects of the teaching.

Live paint overs and feedback  Audio feedback notes (from Colin Ponds and Anne Doncaster audio feedback LTA project).  student liked a non scripted response, so don’t mind the odd pause or background noise.  You don’t have to edit the video or sound file.  Student feedback has been Positive.
  • 8. ONLINE SCREENCASTING SOFTWARE FOR SHU STAFF  SCREENCAST O MATIC  SHU now has online screen recording facilities for staff use. Staff can use it in or out of SHU including on their own equipment.  We have a URL with a capacity of 1000 unique devices connecting per month. The licensing ‘sticks’ to and counts against our entitlement for a month for each unique device it is used from (no matter how much or how little it is used).  It is accessed as below: The button to click is ‘Start Recording’. (We don’t currently have the Pro Tools application installed in SHU.   • 10. Live paint overs and feedback  File sizes.15 Minuets of content Can be around 30 MB  A Simple solution would be to limit responses so 3,5 minuets files could be sent in 3 e-mails.  Drop box and Google drive could offer further solutions.
