IRONY
Verbal irony is the use of
words to mean something
different than what they
appear to mean.
The main feature of verbal
irony is that it is used by
speaker intentionally out of
disappointment and
frustration,
3. EXAMPLES OF VERBAL
IRONY
A sister walks into her brother's messy apartment and
says, "I see you're still the king of clean!"
Someone shopping for a mattress lays down on a really
firm one and says, "This bed's about as soft as a brick."
After a terrible blind date, a woman calls her friend and
says, "He was as friendly as a rattlesnake."
4. 2. DRAMATIC IRONY
Dramatic irony occurs when the audience
knows a key piece of information that a character
in a play, movie, or novel does not.
This is the type of irony that makes us ”DON’T
GO IN THERE!” during a scary movie.

Situational irony involves a
discrepancy between what is expected
to happen next and what actually
happens. It occurs when the exact
opposite of what is meant to happen,

• The police station gets robbed.
• A post on Facebook complaining how useless
Facebook is.
