PROJECT PROPOSAL 2

11. Introduction
The project will be a community playground to be created at the
0.5-acre wooded lot centralized in the middle of the
neighborhood. The playground will be divided into three areas;
one for swings, one for toddlers, and on for kids under the age
of 10. Each section will have age appropriate playground
equipment. Additionally, there will be picnic tables and benches
for parents to relax at while watching their children play and
interact with other kids.
Goal and Objectives
The overall goal of the project will be to create and build a
community playground for children age 10 and under. This goal
can be broken down into the three goals of planning the
playground and getting approval from the homeowners’
association (HOA); prepping the land for the playground; and
purchasing and installing the playground equipment. Objectives
support the goals and provide opportunities to track progress.
Some of the objectives of this project would be to hire a tree
cutting crew to remove trees and stumps from play areas,
determining the layout of the playground, picking up the
equipment from suppliers and implementing safety measures.
Stakeholders
A stakeholder is the “person, or organization that is actively
involved in the project, or whose interests may be positively or
negatively affected by execution or completion of the project. A
stakeholder may also exert influence over the project and its
deliverables” (Cooper, n.d.). Some common stake holders in
projects are project manager, customers, communities, and
users. The customers of the community playground are the
families in the neighborhood community who want a safe place
for their children to play close to home. Three of the primary
stakeholders aside from the customers are contractors, the
homeowners’ association (HOA), and sponsors who are
financing the playground project.
12. Milestones and Deliverable
A milestone is defined as “scheduled event that indicates the
completion of a major deliverable event (or a set thereof) of a
project” (Milestone, n.d.). The milestones of a project serve as a
measurement of work and progress. Milestones are measurable,
observable, and independent of time. Since milestones are
independent of time, they are not associated with work or
consumption of resources. The major milestones involved in
this project are park construction plans accepted by customers,
land cleared and prepped, playground equipment purchased,
playground equipment installation completes, and the park
opened to the community. Each of these milestones and the
delivery of the park o the community marks a key completion
point of the projects and makes it possible to move on to the
next objective.
High-level Timeline
A high-level time line is a graphical representation of the
projects key tasks and deadlines. The timeline is typically
divided into chunks, each ending with a milestone. The time
line for this project would depict that clearing and prepping the
land will take 15 days; equipment assembly and installation will
take 10 days, and final inspection will take 1 day.
Project Cost Estimate
The project’s overall costs consist of amounts charged by land
clearing company, cost of equipment, and salaries of the
assembly team constructing the playground. The cost for
clearing land is estimated at $0.50 per square foot or $10, 890.
The cost of the playground equipment and other costs are
estimated at $18,000. The salaries of the construction team are
estimated to be $5,000. This makes the project’s overall
estimated cost $33,890. The key staffing that will be needed for
the project will be the land clearing team to clear the wooded
area and the construction team that will build the playground.
The non-staffing resources needed will be the sand and
playground equipment.
Greatest Challenge
13. The greatest challenge for this project will keeping the
timeline with the constant weather changes that South Carolina
experiences. Rain could delay the land being cleared and
prepped in time. It also present problems with assembling and
installing the playground equipment. One way to address this
challenge would be to leave additional time in the timeline for
clearing and prepping the land. Finishing early is always better
than finishing late. A second way to address the problem with
rain would be to construct the covered sitting area first that way
if it rains or is too hot, the shaded area can be used to assemble
the equipment prior to it being installed.
