“Without grammar very little
can be conveyed….but
without vocabulary nothing
can be conveyed”
4. Definition
A vocabulary is a set of familiar words
within a person's language. A vocabulary,
usually developed with age, serves as a
useful and fundamental tool for
communication and acquiring knowledge.

5. What needs to be taught?
Nowadays methodologists and
linguists suggest that teachers can decide
and select the words to be taught on the
basis of how frequently they are used by
speakers of the language.

6. Carter – McCarthy rightly points out:
“Knowing a word involves knowing its
spoken and written context of use; its
patterns with words of related meaning as
well as with its collocation partners; its
syntactic, pragmatic and discourse
patterns;. It means knowing it actively and
productively as well as receptively.”

teaching a word?
1. The meaning(s) of the word
2. Its spoken and written forms
3. What “word parts” it has (e.g., any prefix, suffix, and
“root” form)
4. Its grammatical behavior (e.g., its word class, typical
grammatical patterns it occurs in)
5. Its collocations
6. Its register
7. What associations it has (e.g., words that are similar or
opposite in meaning)
8. What connotations it has
9. Its frequency 7
8. Innovative Ways of Teaching
Vocabulary:
Game 1
Divide the class in 2 groups. Make all the
students stand. One student from every team
will come to pick a word card from me and
have to tell the meaning or the synonym of it.
If the answer is right, he/she can sit. The card
can also be passed to other members of team
if he doesn’t answer. The team would win
where most students are sitting.
8
9. Game 2
I shall write a word on the white board and
the students are allowed to write its related
word one by one. For example the word
“class” is written, then students may write
bench, chair, desk, duster etc.
To teach new words I shall add two or more
new words that they don’t know i.e. ceiling,
door step etc.

10. Instructions!
1. The teacher may use some other games
too of this kind to get the vocabulary
improved.
2. Always add only few new words one
time in order to add to the students’
vocabulary effectively.
3. These games are effective for classes 1
to all levels.
4. Words in their books and note-books can
easily be used for this purpose. 10
