Q2
1. 2. How effective is
the combination
of your main
product and
ancillary texts?
2. We as a group chose to do a promotion package for the song Dancing Shoes by the Arctic
Monkeys. This fits with the genre of our choice which is Indie Rock. We chose to use this
song as the Arctic Monkeys never actually recorded a professional video for this song
although but instead just used live performances of them. This is why we felt we could use
our ideas and knowledge of the Indie genre to create a good music video for this well
known song.
After finishing the video for the song, I uploaded it to YouTube to see what others thought
of the video. After this our task was to create a digipak and a promotional poster to
promote the band we came up with as a group but performed the popular Arctic Monkeys
song.
In this PowerPoint presentation I will evaluate my media texts on how they used
conventions effectively, and also how the products were effective at appealing to my
intended target audience and the use of digital media throughout all stages the stages of
production, and I will contrast this with audience feedback.
Introduction
3. Creating a Brand Identity
In my opinion to create a good brand identity,
the overall image of the band such as the music
video, digipak and poster, and also how they
portray themselves has to match the genre.
The indie genre prides itself on the rough and
rugged style overall. This transcends through
the music right down to their personality,
clothes and hairstyle. I feel that we definitely
matched these components in order to create a
good conventional brand identity, similar to
that of a professional Indie band as you can see
here with a still of our final music video below,
and the final digipak and promotional poster to
the right. We used this black and white house
style across our products.
4. As you can see I used the
same image for the front of
the album cover as I did on
the promotional poster, as
did The Libertines on their
self titled album. This
creates a professional look
to the project and is used
by many successful bands.
Having a house style with
differentiate my band and
make them stand out with
their unique look.
5. Specifically on our poster we used conventions that would make it easier for our
audience to make links between the promotional poster and the digipak it was
promoting, for example we included all the same house styles which was a blacked out
scratched effect as well as the same font for the title of the poster and the digipak
which was 'The Frauds' we also included a release date for our album on the poster
which is what an audience would expect to see making it a simple but yet effective in
promoting our album.
Again Mise-en-scene played an
important part in creating a successful
promotional package, including the
poster for example we used the same
image from the front cover of our
album on our poster, as we felt that
keeping it simply would be just as
effective as if we made a complicated
designed poster as it would allow the
audience to instantly tell that it was
our album the poster was promoting
also this was a typical convention of
many indie/rock albums and
promotional packages we had
research into.

6. Digipak
Mise-en-scene also played an vital part in the designing of our final digipak. We used images from the
day we filmed our music video therefore we are wearing and look the same. We then placed them on
one of the six panels of our album cover.
We chose this image and to use it in our final digipak as we felt
that it would portray us fairly well, and it shows off our simple
clothing choice which is a typical mise-en-scene for indie/rock as
we found through much research that this is what most indie
artists dress like as they try to represent the working class who
wouldn't have a lot of money to spend on fancy clothing.
We felt this would make our digipak successful as it is what our
intended audience would expect to see. The idea of a recurring
design was probably the most important concept of creating a
successful digipak and promotional package. We found that
nearly all bands choose to use the same design through out their
full package and in some way, shape or form. We did this by using
the same effects, colours, and textures within our poster and
digipak which was black and grey this also followed the
convention of connecting it with our music video as that was also
in black and white with a scratched texture.
7. Successful Expectations?
Like I already stated, the Indie Genre is not about being glitz and glam but instead being rough and
rugged and seeming working class. The audience of the Indie Genre don’t expect the band to put on
a fashion show or anything fancy, but just to hear the talented musicians play and enjoy their music.
I think we was successful in following this expectation as we tried to
represent the band as a working class youth, we did this through
clothing choice as this image shows he is only wearing jeans and a
plain white top and no fancy outfit showing our audience that he
wasn't about the money and was simply there to sing and perform.
Also the setting of our video helps create this representation as it is
simply set in a dance room and is a performance video once again
showing that we as a band are more about making music than the
locations or settings this is a typical convention or many indie/rock
music videos as i have found many bands just perform in urban areas.
Our digipak and promotional poster was also successful in achieving this expectation as we only used
dark or grey-scale colours and kept the designs simple for both which would allow our audience to
make that urban working class, not got much money connection between us and our album. Allowing
them to see that we cared more about getting our music out-there then we did about how we did it,
typical of an indie rock band.
8. Improvements
Overall I feel that our three products are very successful in what they are aiming to portray
and I would not make any improvements.
