Scientific approach: LPP, PERT/CPM, Queueing model, NLP, Dynamic Programming, MILP, Game theory, heuristic programming. Deterministic system: - i.e a system which gives the same result for a particular set of input, no matter how many times we recalculate it. Probabilistic system: weather forecast, tossing of die etc.

- During I World war (1914-18)one of the deadliest conflicts in history left millions of people head and caused great loss to the military society. In 1930 british scientists set up the first filed installations of radars and observed air operations II World war (1939-45), Analysis of radars by scientists led to improved and increased effectiveness of British fighters in world war II Use of science and math in military operations led to scientist to coin the term OR The success of OR in military attracted many industrial managers who were seeking solutions to their complex problems Today, almost every organization has a handful to staff members who apply OR techniques to solve complex problems and to take wise decisions The growth of OR is not limited to USA, UK but reached many other countries around the globe. India was one of the first few countries who started using OR in 1949. The first OR unit in India was established in Regional Research Laboratory at Hyderabad in 1949 At the same time, another unit was set up in Defense Science Laboratory now known as Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO) Later, in 1953, an OR unit was established in Indian Statistical Institute with the aim of using OR methods in national planning and survey. In the 21st century, OR is a popular discipline in many insitutions.
