Nutraceutical is the hybrid of ‘nutrition’and ‘pharmaceutical’. Nutraceuticals; in broad, are food or part of food playing a significant role in modifying and maintaining normal physiological function that maintains healthy human beings. The food products used as nutraceuticals can be categorized as dietary fibre, prebiotics, probiotics, polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants and other different types of herbal natural foods. These nutraceuticals used in various diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension etc. In whole, ‘nutraceutical’
has lead to the new era of medicine and health, in which the food industry has become a research oriented sector. This article aim to provide the knowledge of nutraceutical with its uses in various diseases.

3. Introduction
The term "Nutraceutical" was coined by combining the
terms "Nutrition" and "Pharmaceutical" in 1989 by Dr
Stephen De Felice, Chairman of the Foundation for
Innovation in Medicine.
“Nutraceutical’’ is any substance that may be considered a
“food or part of a food and provides medical or health
benefits including prevention and treatment of diseases’’.
Nutrition
Required for
health
Pharmaceuticals
Remedy for
sickness/injury
Nutraceuticals
Preventative
medical approach
4. The Reasons for Shift towards Nutraceuticals
Increasing numbers of consumers, concerned about
healthcare costs.
Dissatisfied with pharmaceutical agents in promoting
health, are turning to nutraceuticals to improve their health
and prevent chronic disease.
People believing more in prevention is better than a cure.
People who have chronic diseases and have found no
solution in allopathic medicines.
Economically challenged patients.
5. Health Benefits of Nutraceuticals
Increase the health value of our diet.
Helps to live longer.
Help to avoid particular medical conditions.
May have a psychological benefit from doing something for oneself.
May be perceived to be more "natural" than traditional medicine and
less likely to produce unpleasant side effects.
May present food for populations with special needs (e.g. nutrient-
dense foods for the elderly).
Physiological Benefit of Nutraceuticals
Cardiovascular agents
Antiobese agents
Antidiabetics
Anticancer agents
Immune boosters
Chronic inflammatory disorders
Degenerative diseases
6. Classification of Nutraceuticals
1) Nutraceuticals Based on their Source
SOURCES NUTRACEUTICALS
PLANTS •Tomato ( solanum lycopersium )
•Garlic ( alium sativum )
ANIMALS •Shark liver oil
•Cod liver oil
MINERALS •Calcium
•Magnesium
•Phosphorus
MICRO-ORGANISM •Lactobacilli
•Bifidobacterium
12. Role of Nutraceuticals in the Prevention of
Hypertension
There are many studies reporting diet and reduction of blood pressure
improve cardiovascular health, however, the association between
different nutraceuticals and hypertension is still unclear. This is
mainly due to the fact that there are many biases, and inconclusive,
inconsistent studies, which have lead to limited guidelines for the safe
and effective use of nutraceuticals for the treatment of hypertension
when compared to a regimented diet plan and treatment with
medication. The aim of this review is to summarize the effects and
mechanism of action of many of the most well known nutraceuticals
used in treatment of cardiovascular diseases, in particular
hypertension.
Increased sodium intake, lower potassium intake, decreased w-3 fatty
acid intake, higher trans fat and saturated fate intake, improper
nutrition, obesity and reduced exercise have resulted in a significant
increase in nutritionally related diseases, and increased the incidence
of hypertension and CVD.

18. Advantages of Nutraceuticals
Improve health
Delay aging
Easily available and cheap
Increases life expectancy
Reduced side effects with desirable outcomes
Holistic approach
Provide dietary supplement naturally
It provides food for populations with special needs (eg:
nutrient-dense food for the elderly).
19. Limitations of Nutraceuticals
Not subjected to same testing and regulations as pharmaceuticals
Majority not regulated by FDA in USA
Companies creating unregulated products to create a wide profit
margin
Bioavailability of nutrients is lower
Side effects and toxicity have been continuously reported not only
due to ingestion of the nutraceutical itself but also owing to the
possibility of contamination
The problem is that many of these products do not provide
consumers with proper information about their safety and
effectiveness, possible side effect, interaction with prescription
medicines or the effect they have on existing medical conditions.
Effect may be attributed to that of a placebo
20. Conclusion
Nutraceuticals are present in most of the food ingredients with
varying concentration. Concentration, time and duration of supply of
nutraceuticals influence human health. Manipulating the foods, the
concentration of active ingredients can be increased. Diet rich in
nutraceuticals along with regular exercise, stress reduction and
maintenance of healthy body weight will maximize health and reduce
disease risk.
Many industries manufacture and market nutraceuticals, where the
side effects (especially consumed in large quantities) of these
nutraceuticals are not reported or often unproven. In order to have
scientific knowledge about nutraceuticals, public should be educated
where recommended daily doses of these nutraceuticals should be
known by each consumer. With the rapidly increasing interest in the
nutraceutical revolution, there is a need to establish a vibrant
nutraceutical research community which is absolutely necessary to
convert majority of potential nutraceuticals to established ones,
thereby, truly delivering their enormous benefits.
