OUR OBJECTIVES
• PI-Scale is the open access flexible OLED pilot line service
offering customized flexible OLEDs and system integration for
new luminous products.
• Using PI-Scale service enables companies to quickly and cost
effectively test and scale up their flexible OLED lighting or
signage concepts, validate them with their partners and bring
them to a level where they are ready to be transferred to a mass
production facility.
• Establish a sustainable flexible Organic Light-Emitting Diodes
(OLEDs) industry in Europe and accelerate the commercial
adoption of this “bright” technology

OLEDs MANUFACTURING
SHEET-TO-SHEET PROCESSING
ROLL-TO-ROLL PROCESSING
Each layer is deposited over the
substrate that is made to pass
through a pre-arranged
sequence of deposition
chambers at a constant rate
This structure is gaining interest
as a solution to produce flexible
OLEDs, as it offers the ability to
keep the substrate flat and
minimize damage to the device.
The process reduce substrate
handling considerably.

OLEDs
§ Flexible OLEDs
§ Customized sizes, shapes and colors, small bending radius
§ Connectors
§ Long strips > 1m (R2R)
§ Transparent (transparent ultra-moisture barrier and substrates w/
and w/o anode)
§ High performance moisture barrier and electrode films
§ Active and passive matrix segmented OLEDs
SYSTEM INTEGRATION
§ Lamination, bonding and system hybrid integration (assembly and
interconnections) of OLEDs of thin film flexible electronics in 2D
and 3D over molded polymer shapes
PILOT LINE
§ Prototyping and pilot production, S2S and R2R manufacturing
§ Technology ahead of that available in mass production, to test
feasibility and design of new features with customers,
§ Consulting with technical experts

Overmolded OLED
§ fixed sizes and shapes OLED with limited
set of colors
§ Mostly rigid OLEDs (LG and Konica
Minolta offers flexible panels)
§ Focusing on high volume applications =
high entry fees to lines
§ No flexibility on production lines (capacity
of million panels/month, $100M fabs)

Philips Lighting panel “Lumiblade”, aimed towards signage and emergency lighting applications
OLED sign offers a much more homogeneous and direct output compared to LED-based signs (size 210x105 mm, 2.5 mm thin, luminance: 800 cd/m2, color
temperature of 4,500K, lifetime of over 5 years). Philips says the OLED offers significantly improved visibility – up to 20 meters.
The OLED itself is a white OLED, and the OEM inserts a thin film with the graphics on top.

High Color Rendering Index (>90), which helps to reflex true color of displayed products. OLEDs
are very thin, allow integration within the shelves, which can be very thin too. OLEDs surface light
uniformity is more appealing (no dotted line patterns like with LEDs). Lack of heat preserve
products quality, allow to use nice aluminum shelves, lack of shadow make then more visually
attractive. Reduce eye fatigue for customers and employes, no
