▪ Proper nouns are special names given to a person, animal,
place or thing. Proper nouns always begin with capital
letters.

Differences between Common Nouns and Proper Nouns
Examples:
• Dog = common noun
• Dog’s name (Fido) = proper noun
• Her husband (common noun) was called Peter (proper
noun).
• My favorite newspaper (common noun) is The Stars (proper
noun).
Identify the common nouns and proper nouns in the
sentences below.
1. The thief broke into Mr. Lee’s house.
2. The award-winning Steven Raj is the greatest baseball player in history.
3. You can get a good view of Singapore from the top of Mount Faber
using telescope.
4. Queen Elizabeth II welcomed the president of the United States.
5. Ms. Ann bought us delicious pastries from the Sweet Spot.
Countable Nouns 可数名词
Countable Nouns
▪ Countable nouns are for things we can count using numbers.
They have singular 单数形式 and a plural form 复数形式.
▪ If you want to ask about the quantity of a countable noun, you
ask "How many?"
Examples:
1. I saw a mouse running across the kitchen floor.
2. We met an old friend while we were there.
3. We invited only a few people.
4. Several girls decided to bake some cakes.

Uncountable Nouns 不可数名词
Uncountable Nouns
▪ Uncountable nouns are for the things that we cannot count with
numbers. For examples: milk, sugar, salt, oil, love, anger, flour and etc.
▪ They usually do not have a plural form and used with a singular verb.
▪ If you want to ask about the quantity of an uncountable noun, you ask
"How much?“
Examples with determiner:
1. There is some sugar in the bowl
2. A little more salt is needed in the soup.
Examples without determiner:
3. Their laughter was so loud that I could hear it in the room.
4. Food is scarce in many developing countries.

▪ A collective noun is the name of a number of persons,
animals or things grouped together and spoken of as one
whole.
▪ They are often followed by OF + PLURAL NOUN
(e.g. bunch of flowers, pack of cards, litter of kittens)
