Apple & Google Up Their Philanthropic Efforts
1. APPLE & GOOGLE UPTHEIR
PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS
Robert Hornung
2. • As you may have seen in my last article I
published on philanthropy, it is getting easier and
easier to give back and help others nowadays
• Individuals and companies of all sizes are getting
involved and helping different groups,
organizations, or causes in any way they can
• Recently top tech companies, Google and
Apple, have come out into the spotlight as
being big-time philanthropic providers
3. • There has recently been been a number of instances in the middle east that
have caught the attention of world news outlets and people across the globe
• The refugee crisis that is threatening the Middle East and a large part of
Europe has become the reason for Google and Apple to intervene and offer
their help
• In fact the two powerhouse organizations have already made extensive
headway in reducing the damage by raising millions in funds
• Google reportedly raised more than $11 million in donations right around
the time Apple decided they would also pick up the torch
4. • Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, released a statement to Apple
employees notifying them of an imminent “substantial
donation” to help the refugee cause in Europe and around
the Mediterranean Sea
• Cook also pledged $2 on every $1 an employee donates to
the cause, which knowing Apple will be a substantial amount
• Apple employees have been encouraged to join the effort
by donating directly through the Red Cross iOS app
• Cook went on record saying,“As we’ve all seen and read in
the news, millions of people from Syria and other Middle
Eastern countries have fled their homes because of war and
persecution. Europe, where many hope to find safety, is
experiencing a refugee crisis on a scale that hasn’t been
seen since World War II.”
5. • Silicon Valley Community Foundation CEO, Emmett
Carson, also spoke out recently regarding the refugee
crisis by explaining, “This kind of giving is reflective of
the current trends among philanthropists in the valley,
especially at tech companies.”
• Carson went on to say, “They view the global
community as part of their backyards, in many ways,
and so they are motivated to help in crisis situations
such as this, as well as with long-term giving that
makes a measurable difference in countries far from
the Bay Area.”
6. • Apple and Google are just some of the big
companies donating the big bucks and time to
the worthy cause
• WhatsApp just donated $556 million to the
SiliconValley Community Foundation
• Bill and Melinda Gates also donated $1.9 billion,
while three tech entrepreneurs also donated
substantial sums over $500 million each
7. • Google has declined to comment on how
much they are donating as they do not want
to draw extra attention to their company just
for doing the right thing
• Apple on the other hand reported their giving
and followed the lead of the late, great Apple
co-founder, Steve Jobs
8. • It will definitely be interesting to see what
other companies, groups, organizations, and
industry leaders decide to throw their hats in
the ring
• Please be sure to look up local givings or see
how you can help out the refugee crisis in your
own way
• Anything and everything helps
