Core conversation from SXSW 2015:

Something sexy happened at SXSW 2014 that didn’t involve Lady GaGa: an unprecedented number of do-gooding Geekerati showed up, wanting to change the world. Does this mean that social good has “made it”, or just become the latest trend to generate lots of hype but little impact? Shiny new platforms, brands and tools promise game-changing technologies & society-saving outcomes, but do they get us any closer to actually solving the world’s most challenging social problems?

It’s time we put the SXSW community to work doing what it does best - leading industry innovation. Come to this session ready to get your hands dirty exploring what authentic, lasting social change could really look like.

  1. 1. Digital strategies, campaigns & websites for social good
  2. 2. These days in tech everything seems to be colored by “good” intentions. Is this all just “conscience laundering”? Has ideology been replaced by capitalism? Are the people embracing this new “shiny” the best stewards of change? Can this “social good” boom survive the hype? When it’s not cool to be the good guy anymore, what happens? This will be our task today
  3. 3. Beyond specific non profits or philanthropic orgs, there are now so many brands focusing on changing the world …..

  7. 7. Changing society through tech It’s not about “apps” or tools.. It’s about passionate people being driven to find solutions to for the massive challenges that impact our world or just improving the life of a single person. We should be talking about purpose, not platforms & product.
  8. 8. “official” defintion BUT Is “social good” being bolted on vs being integrated into our society in a more organic way into everything we do?
  9. 9. How can we achieve AUTHENTIC social good through tech can thrive and not just end up as “hot” trend in a “remember when?” buzzfeed list
  10. 10. Everyone is looking to create the hottest new mousetrap but is this change happening in a way that is sustainable and real? In doing my research for this session, it felt like trying to boil the ocean. There is an overwhelming list of society issues that need to be addressed in order for us to not only survive but leave a world better for those after us. So id like to share (3) examples of the nexus between of technology and social change that moved me and in my opinion, typify authentic solutions to complex societal problems. Then It will beYOUR turn (so get ready!)
