3. FWD Removal
Disconnect battery
negative cable
Loosen all fasteners on
“top” first
Install engine support
Remove stakes in axle
nuts
Mark subframe before
removal
◦ Always perform a 4 wheel
alignment after FWD
trans R&R
4. FWD Removal
Never hit axle stub
shaft to remove CV
axle
Use press or air
hammer
5. Axle Removal
Inner CV Joint Removal
Pry on inner joint with
one quick motion
Slide hammer and
adapter
Punch out axle through
final drive
DO NOT PULL ON JOINT
OR IT WILL SEPARATE!
6. FWD Removal
Engine Supports
Connect to block or
secure mounting point
If engine is not supported
it can:
◦ Tear motor mounts
◦ Break heater core tubes
◦ AC Lines
◦ Break wires/looms
◦ Cause engine to fall out on
floor
Once secure, mark
subframe location and
remove subframe bolts by
hand!
7. Turning Flex Plate
Flex Plate & Converter Bolts
Torque Converter
bolts/nuts must be
removed
Turn the flex plate with:
◦ Remote starter switch
◦ Crankshaft pulley bolt
◦ Flywheel holder/turning
tool
◦ Long screwdriver or pry
bar
Converter is loose when
you can wiggle bolts or
spin converter
8. RWD Removal
Torsion Bars
Mark location of
adjustment bolt
Unload and remove
torsion bar
Check ride height
when done with
installation
9. RWD Removal
Mark drive shaft at
companion flange
and tail shaft
Check universal
joints for wear
Check carrier
bearing for play
wear
Wrap “u” joints
with tape to
prevent loosing
caps
10. RWD Removal
Support
transmission while
removing bell
housing bolts
Motor mounts, wire
looms, heater hoses
can be damaged if
trans “hangs” off
engine
11. Neutralizing Engine and
Transmission
To insure no abnormal vibrations you
must neutralize engine & transmission
◦ With engine and trans bolts loose
D-Power break
R-Power break
N-Rev engine
P- Shut off and torque bolts
Check for vibrations in D with A/C on
