4. Lola Juanita

5. Lola Juanita lives in the province.
One day, she visited her
granddaughter, Annie, in the city. It
was the first time that Annie saw her
lola. She was very excited.

6. But her excitement soon turned
into frustration. She found it difficult
talking to her grandmother because
of her poor hearing. She also needed
assistance in getting around the
house.

7. Soon, Annie became impatient.
She started raising her voice angrily
at Lola Juanita whenever she had to
repeat what she said. She also made
excuses when Lola Juanita needed
her help.

8. Annie’s mother noticed the change in her
behavior. She talked to Annie about it. She
explained to her about Lola Juanita’s failing
health and old age. She asked Annie to speak
more kindly and gently to her grandmother.
She also asked her to be more patient
whenever she has to accompany her
grandmother somewhere.

9. She explained that Lola Juanita needs
their patience and understanding because as
people grow old, they become weak and
dependent on the people around them. Even
Annie and her mother will grow old someday.
They will also need the love, support, and
understanding of their family and of other
people.

10. Annie realized the truth in what her
mother had said. Now she knows that her
grandmother needs her and the whole family’s
love and support. From then on, she treated
her Lola Juanita more kindly and patiently. For
this, she was rewarded by her lola with many
beautiful and interesting stories.

11. Respecting our elders
shows that we care for them.

12. We should always be
obedient and courteous to
them.

13. We should use “po” and
“opo” when talking to them.

14. We should also be patient in
helping them and giving them
their needs.

15. If they are staying with us, we
should kiss them goodbye when we
leave home. We should listen to
them patiently when they speak.
