2. CYLINDRICAL CO-ORDINATE SYSTEM
A cylindrical coordinate system is a three-
dimensional co-ordinate system that specifies point
positions by the distance from a chosen reference
axis, the direction from the axis relative to a chosen
reference direction and the distance from a chosen
reference plane perpendicular to the axis . The latter
distance is given as a positive or negative number
depending on which side of the reference plane
faces the point.
3. โข The origin of the system is the point where all
three coordinates can be given as zero. This is
the intersection between the reference plane
and the axis. The axis is called
the cylindrical or longitudinal axis.
โข Other directions perpendicular to the
longitudinal axis are called radial lines.
โข The distance from the axis may be called
the radial distance or radius i.e 'p' -'Rho', while
the angular coordinate is sometimes referred to
as the angular position or as the azimuth.
โข The third coordinate may be called
the height or altitude.
4. โข 'p' : The Distance of point P from the
reference Z axis.in space 'p' can vary from
zero to infinity.
โข ' ฮฆ' : The Angle made by p of point with
positive X direction. ฮฆ is measured in that
direction from X axis, which places Y axis at
ฮฆ =90 degree. In space ฮฆ can vary from 0
to 360 degree or 2ฯ radian.
โข z' : The Distance of point P from positive
Z direction.In space z can vary from -
infinity to +infinity.
The Cylindrical co-ordinates can be defined as:
5. โข WHEN 'p' , ' ฮฆ ' , 'z' ARE CONSTANT:
โข 'p '=CONSTANT:
โข This defines a set of points which are at the same
distance p,equal to the constant from the
reference Z axis .The locus is a cylinder having
axis along Z axis.
โข ' ฮฆ' =CONSTANT:
โข This defines a set of points which make the same
angle 'ฮฆ' ,equal to the constant with positive X
direction .The locus is a plane infinite in p and Z
directions and at an angle ฮฆ ,equal to the
constant,with positive X direction.
โข 'z' =CONSTANT:
โข This defines a set at points which are at the same
distance z, equal to the constant ,from the origin
in positive Z direction. The locus is an infinite
plane perpendicular to Z axis.
6. APPLICATIONS OF CYLINDRICAL CO-ORDINATE SYSTEM:
โข Cylindrical co-ordinate systems are best used when
dealing with cylindrical systems such as the volume of
a water tank.
โข Other applications of cylindrical coordinates are in
computer animation, cylindrical coordinates are used
to locate positions on a curved cylindrical surface.
โข Co-ordinate systems are also used to describe
positions of particles or points at which quantities are
to be defined or measured.
โข They are also often used as references for specifying
directions.
