What is Engineering Mechanics?
•It is a branch of Applied Science,
which deals with the behavior of a
body when the body is at rest or in
motion, it also involves the
application of the principles of
mechanics to solve real-time
engineering problems.
Engineering Mechanics
Mechanics of rigid body Mechanics of deformable body Mechanics of fluid
Statics Dynamics
Kinetics Kinematics
Strength of Material

Important terms of Engineering Mechanics-
• Mass- Mass is both a property of a physical body and
a measure of its resistance to acceleration.
• Weight-a body's relative mass or the quantity of
matter contained by it.
• Length- Length is a measure of distance.
• Distance and Displacement- Distance is a scalar
quantity that refers to "how much ground an object
has covered" during its motion. Displacement is a
vector quantity that refers to "how far out of place an
object is"; it is the object's overall change in position.
• Velocity-Rate of change of displacement
with respect to time. It is a vector quantity.
• Speed--Rate of change of distance with
respect to time. It is a scalar quantity.
• Acceleration-acceleration is the rate of
change of velocity of an object with respect
to time.
• Momentum-It is the product of
the mass and velocity of an object. It is
a vector quantity. Mathematically, p=mv
• Particle-A infinitely small thing or body is
called particle with respect to other one . For
example we can say earth is a particle with
respect to the universe.
• Rigid body- rigid body is a solid body in
which deformation is zero or negligible, in
simple we can also call that
the distance between any two given points on
a rigid body remains constant in time
regardless of external forces exerted on it.
1. Scalar and Vector quantity-A scalar
quantity is a one dimensional
measurement of a quantity, like
temperature, or mass. A vector has more
than one number associated with it. A
simple example is velocity. It has a
magnitude, called speed, as well as a
direction, like North or Southwest or 10
degrees west of North.
Force-Force can be defined as a push or a pull that changes or tends to
change the state of rest or uniform motion of an object or changes the
direction or shape of an object.
•System of force-A force system is a collection of forces acting at
specified locations (may also include couples). Thus the set
of forces shown on any free body diagram make up a force
system. Force system is simply a term used to describe a group
of forces.
