First, let me begin by saying what an honor and a privilege it was to
work with the wonderful staff on the American Corners in Stip without
whom the Creative Writing Workshops could not have been the amazing
success that they were. The students wrote some wonderful poems, plays, essays and short stories and I
want to also thank those students who gave up part of their summer vacation to stay indoors writing
literature. Also thanks to the parents who brought their kids to the program. This very ambitious
program had some wonderful writing begun in it as I am sure that you will see in the anthology. We are
not implying that these works are finished or that they cease to be works-in-progress, but rather this is a
record of what was started in the Creative Writing Camp this summer and I hope that the students use
this relatively permanent record as a kind of personal writing portfolio, so that they can return to works
begun but not completed for revisions as well as visions.
As I reread The Missing Honey play where a snail and a bee were talking to each other, I
remembered the first day of the camp when students were writing their animal stories about images that
they had placed on their portfolio. Kristina GeВrgieva’s amazing poem is certainly another high water
mark for me. There were sonnets and poems such as WiБЗeЕ PВeА by Dejan Maksimovski that
reminded me nostalgically of my youth, and beautiful haiku that were accompanied by the Haiku Houses.
So many of the plays, such as “Planning the Birthday , The Haunted House , and Vacation from Hell
are also memorable and worth revisiting. It is finally “The Evil Side-Kick that works so well on the
printed page.
Thank you so much for letting me spend some of my summer with you and your children. It was an
honor and a pleasure and I hope to see these young writers again next year working on new material,
forms, and genres and reworking some АaЗerials frВА Зheir WriЗer’s Portfolio.
Warm Regards,
Merrilee Cunningham, PhD.

Winter Poem
With every passing day
The mountain tops change
With the raining snowflakes
Made of white silver.
The trees, the plant life
Are changed, when they
Look at the sky,
The beautiful white, cold sky
It turns them into dust.
And when the cold strikes
The wide streets turn to glass
Reflecting like a big mirror,
Showing the mountain,
The beauty of the trees,
Each in their own class.

The Jungle
One day I and my mother went to the forest. I thought the forest would be very beautiful, but
no. The forest is very dangerous. Then I saw a big lion. I was scared. Then, next to the lion, I saw a
beautiful small rabbit, which ran away. I was very happy. Then one butterfly landed on my hand. I
enjoyed it very much. Then, my mother bought me an ice-cream. My mother and I went back home,
happy.

The Stone
In the big state of New York, there are many cities, the biggest one of which is the city of New
York. Living there was a kid called Kyle. He was the smartest in the school. After school he played with
his friends. They tossed their lucky stone from one to another. They used a bad method, so they hit
Kyle on the head. Kyle felt like he was betrayed. He went home with his stone and immediately laid on
his bed КiЗh his head sКelliБg heavilМ. (e fell asleeГ…
And then, a nightmare cane in his sleep. He was in Iraq, being chased by terrorists armed with
AK-47s. He ran and ran and fell in a hole. They surrounded him, but soon left. He was happy, but there
was also a bomb in the hole. He wondered which wire to cut. TheБ he КВke ИГ…
His father was next to him and the pain was gone. He laughed all day, and told everybody about
the dream.

The Magic Umbrella
There was a kid called Eric Cartmann. He had a birthday, and got an umbrella. He loved his
umbrella and used it even when it was as dry as a desert. So, summer came and Eric had to go on a
vacation. The first thing he took was the umbrella. He held it in his hands all the way down to the bus
sЗaЗiВБ…
But when the bus came, he was so excited to leave that he forgot the umbrella on the chair
beside him. He realized what he did after the bus started, but could do nothing about it.

Old Macedonian Architecture
Long, long time ago in medieval times, all the people mostly lived in big castles, made by the
very, very rich vassals or kings. They also lived in small square shapes made of old wood. But when
the Ottoman Empire took Macedonia in their grasp, things changed. People were forced to become
Muslims, and with that everything had to be changed. The Ottomans built a lot of public buildings that
had different style. With that, the style of the architecture of the houses changed. They were made of
clay, wood and broken stone. Mainly, the houses are two stories high. The richer people had white
outer walls, but the poor had unpainted walls. Now, these old houses are historical monuments that
can tell thousands of stories.

This Is a Painter
The painters paint beautiful paintings which amaze the people and capture their feelings.
While not all modern paintings are beautiful, some older paintings are known very well, like the Mona
Lisa fВЕ eЛaАГle. The ГaiБЗeЕs caБ’З ГaiБЗ КiЗh ВБlМ one color. There are more ways to paint a
painting, from using sprays to water colors. The canvas is very complex, and painters use it to tell
people how old a painting is.

The Strange Face
Slowly but very surely the sky was filling with darkness. The usually very bright castle during
daytime, was now illuminated only by the yellow moon. Even though the castle was enormous, there
was only one tall tower rising. By the castle there was a river running. And very close to this river
there was a huge tree throwing one magnificent dark shadow on the ground.
On the tower, there was only one window. And a strange face looking at the countryside.
Walking towards the tree was a black cat, and apparently this was interesting for the strange face in
the tower. When the black cat reached the tree, there was a loud bang on the door at the tower. And
this was a sign of hope for the mysterious man.

The Aqueduct
The aqueducts are highly advanced Roman water systems and are among the greatest
achievements of the ancient world. The running water, indoor plumbing and swewer system were
carrying disease away from the population. Some of these ancient structures are still in use today in
various capacities.
The Roman aqueducts were extraordinarily sophisticated structures. They were built from a
combination of stone, brick and special volcanic cement. The visible remains leave a great impression,
the biggest part of the water system ran bellow the ground. For example, out of 260 miles of the
aqueduct system only 30 miles consisted of the visible arched structures.
The city of Rome was supplied with water through 11 aqueducts built throughout 500 years.
These aqueducts were about 420 – 500 km long with about 47 km above ground. The aqueducts were
used to carry water to the mines, the mills and of course the baths. Every great city in the empire was
supplied by the aqueduct. The entire system relied upon various gradients and the use of gravity to
maintain a continuous flow. The whole idea and the engineering of these aqueducts at the time were
remarkable.

Saints Cyril and Methodius
Saints Cyril and Methodius were two Byzantine brothers born in Thessaloniki in the 9th
century. They became missionaries of Christianity among the Slavic peoples of Great Moravia and
Pannonia. They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet used to transcribe
the Old Church Slavonic language. After their deaths, their pupils continued their missionary work
among other Slavs. Both brothers are venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as saints with the
ЗiЗle Вf EДИals ЗВ Зhe AГВsЗles.

Their father was Leo, and their mother was Maria, who may have been a Slav. The two brothers
lost their father when Cyril was only fourteen, and the powerful minister Theokristos became their
protector.
In 862, both brothers were to enter upon the work which gives them their historical
importance. That year the Prince Rostislav of Great Moravia requested that the emperor Michael III
and the Patriarch Photius send missionaries to evangelize his Slavic subjects. The Emperor quickly
chose to send Cyril, accompanied by his brother Methodius. Their first work seems to have been the
training of assistants. In 863, they began the task of translating the Bible into a language known as Old
Church Slavonic and travelled to Great Moravia to promote it. They enjoyed considerable success in
this endeavor. However, they came into conflict with German ecclesiastics who opposed their efforts
to create a specifically Slavic liturgy.
For the purpose of this mission, they devised the Glagolitic Alphabet, the first alphabet to be
used for Slavic manuscripts. The Glagolitic alphabet was suited to match the specific features of the
Slavic language and its descendant alphabet, the Cyrillic alphabet, is still used by many languages
today.

Mother Theresa
Mother Theresa was born in Skopje, on August 26, 1910. Her full name is Agnes Gonxha
Bojaxiu and she was an Indian-Catholic nun of Albanian origin who founded the Missionaries of
Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950. For 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned and dying,

Teresa of Calcutta.
Mother Teresa suffered a heart attack in Rome in 1983 while visiting Pope John Paul II. After a
second attack in 1989, she received an artificial pacemaker. In 1991 after a battle with pneumonia
while in Mexico, she suffered further heart problems.
In April 1996, Mother Teresa fell and broke her collar bone. In August she suffered from
malaria and failure on the left heart ventricle. She had heart surgery but it was clear that her health
was declining. When she fell ill she made the controversial decision to be treated at a well-equipped
hospital in California instead of her own clinics.
On March 13 1997, she stepped down from being the head of Missionaries of Charity. She died
on September 5, 1997.

Alexander the Great
Alexander the Great was one of the most powerful conquerors on the planet, along with
Genghis Khan. He was born in 352 B.C. and died in 323 B.C. His teacher was one of the most famous
philosophers in Ancient Greece. His parents were Philip the Second and his mother Olympia. He had
conquered over 16 cities. Unfortunately his conquering stopped on the borders of the former Persian
Empire. Soldiers tired of fighting were requesting days off back in Alexandria and Egypt.
It is believed that on a celebration, poison was poured into his glass, and his life ended quickly
and painless. Other theories say that he died from malaria. Alexander had one wife and her name was
Rosana, they had a kid named Alexander IV who died in battle when he was 14. After the death of
Alexander, his empire was divided amongst his generals.

Depicted on this picture is Alexander the Great. He was born in Pella, the ancient capital of
Macedonia. He was the son of Phillip II, the king of Macedonia, and son of Olympia, a princess of

parents hired Aristotle to be his personal tutor. Alexander was trained together with other children of

his interest in science, medicine and philosophy. When Alexander was 16 his father Philip went to
Byzantium to fight rebels. Later, Alexander started to war with Persia with an army of 35.000
Macedonians and 7.600 Greeks. The Macedonian army soon encountered the Persian army under King
Darius III, at a crossing of the river Granicius, near the ancient city of Troy. Alexander lost only 110
men in the war and beat the enemy.

Oh great - just enjoying my retirement days. So Brayan, tomorrow I'm going to take you to the
city. There's an agency that organizes a trip and a tour in the castle. You can book your trip
there. You'll be busy all day. Now let's go home. You should rest.

So they got a good night sleep in the house of their grandfather. And they woke up early in the
morning. Like John said he took them to the city and they booked a trip to the castle of Count
Dracula. They arrived there with a lot of other tourists.

Can I have some attention here? Thank you. Well welcome to the castle of count Dracula. This
castle is very big and has a lot of hidden ways. It's like a labyrinth, so I suggest each one of you
stays close to the group. Don't wonder around. I'm going to tell you and show you everything
that's worth seeing. As we go deeper into the castle I'm going to tell you the real story about
count Dracula. Now let's enter. The guide enters the castle and the tourists follow him.
(The guide shows the tourists some pictures and statues, and the tourists admire and take some pictures.
They all enter the library)

count Dracula and then I will leave you to look at some books you might be interested in.

Well, now Mickey is probably doomed. Meanwhile his father and sister and the other tourists left
the castle. His father thought that Mickey was following the group, so he didn't pay much
attention to him. They noticed that he wasn't there after they left the castle. The Guide quickly
called a crew that knows the castle. They came after an hour. It was about 7 o'clock when they
came.

Creative Writing Summer Workshop Highlights
With Merrilee Cunningham,
WITS Cultural Envoy,
July 12th
- 16th
, 2010, AC STIP
AC Stip, despite being the
youngest Corner in Macedonia,
had the honor of hosting
Merrilee Cu i gha ’s Creative
Writing Summer Workshop this
year. A total of 24 students ages
7 – 18 took part in the week-long
event, which ended with great
success for all participants!
The interactive and creative
nature of the course was more than enough to keep all participants very interested and engaged in what
they were doing. The participants were split into two groups (ages 7 – 12 and 13 – 18, respectively), and
according to their age they took part in an array of different brainstorming, writing, and interactive
activities.
Under Merrilee’s guidance, both AC Stip staff
(Dushan and Marija) took the roles of assistant
teachers and, along with the help of PCVs Rachel
Schaar and Daniel Pickel, ensured that the
participants enjoyed the many inspiring tasks and
word-play games, helping them channel their
creativity into many interesting pieces of writing.
For example, the Found Poetry activity consisted of
the participants choosing and collecting five or
more words randomly scattered throughout the
Corner (done by Merrilee and Dushan), which they
would later use in their poems or short stories.
53
53
Motivation was kept high as every participant enjoyed
the overwhelming fun of the whole course spiced up
with some light competitiveness, which helped every
kid and teenager invest their best in what was put on
paper.
Furthermore, an interesting array of prizes was awarded. The Best
so Far awards were assigned each day, in order to honor the
talent and work of the young writers in several different areas
(Best Short Story so Far, Best Haiku so Far, etc.), while the Best of
the Best awards were given at the completion of the workshop,
which culminated in a total of six collaborative plays, written and
enacted by the participants of the course.
Finally, the certificates that the U.S. Embassy
provided were also awarded to each participant,
by both Merrilee and AC Stip staff. As a cherry on
top, an Anthology of the writings is also in the
making, and will soon be publicly shared.
54
54
To conclude, AC Stip was very glad to have
Merrilee Cunningham coming to Stip and
helping young writers express themselves,
taking their first steps on the road of art’s
never-ending journey. Stip’s young writers
are more than interested in welcoming
Merrilee, the American friend, bard and poet,
in their home town again.

  • 5. 5 5 О О О О | | F FO OR RE EW WO OR RD D First, let me begin by saying what an honor and a privilege it was to work with the wonderful staff on the American Corners in Stip without whom the Creative Writing Workshops could not have been the amazing success that they were. The students wrote some wonderful poems, plays, essays and short stories and I want to also thank those students who gave up part of their summer vacation to stay indoors writing literature. Also thanks to the parents who brought their kids to the program. This very ambitious program had some wonderful writing begun in it as I am sure that you will see in the anthology. We are not implying that these works are finished or that they cease to be works-in-progress, but rather this is a record of what was started in the Creative Writing Camp this summer and I hope that the students use this relatively permanent record as a kind of personal writing portfolio, so that they can return to works begun but not completed for revisions as well as visions. As I reread The Missing Honey play where a snail and a bee were talking to each other, I remembered the first day of the camp when students were writing their animal stories about images that they had placed on their portfolio. Kristina GeВrgieva’s amazing poem is certainly another high water mark for me. There were sonnets and poems such as WiБЗeЕ PВeА by Dejan Maksimovski that reminded me nostalgically of my youth, and beautiful haiku that were accompanied by the Haiku Houses. So many of the plays, such as “Planning the Birthday , The Haunted House , and Vacation from Hell are also memorable and worth revisiting. It is finally “The Evil Side-Kick that works so well on the printed page. Thank you so much for letting me spend some of my summer with you and your children. It was an honor and a pleasure and I hope to see these young writers again next year working on new material, forms, and genres and reworking some АaЗerials frВА Зheir WriЗer’s Portfolio. Warm Regards, Merrilee Cunningham, PhD.

They also lived in small square shapes made of old wood. But when the Ottoman Empire took Macedonia in their grasp, things changed. People were forced to become Muslims, and with that everything had to be changed. The Ottomans built a lot of public buildings that had different style. With that, the style of the architecture of the houses changed. They were made of clay, wood and broken stone. Mainly, the houses are two stories high. The richer people had white outer walls, but the poor had unpainted walls. Now, these old houses are historical monuments that can tell thousands of stories. The usually very bright castle during daytime, was now illuminated only by the yellow moon. Even though the castle was enormous, there was only one tall tower rising. By the castle there was a river running. And very close to this river there was a huge tree throwing one magnificent dark shadow on the ground. On the tower, there was only one window. And a strange face looking at the countryside. Walking towards the tree was a black cat, and apparently this was interesting for the strange face in the tower. When the black cat reached the tree, there was a loud bang on the door at the tower. And this was a sign of hope for the mysterious man. B 2.1 B2

The running water, indoor plumbing and swewer system were carrying disease away from the population. Some of these ancient structures are still in use today in various capacities. The Roman aqueducts were extraordinarily sophisticated structures. They were built from a combination of stone, brick and special volcanic cement. The visible remains leave a great impression, the biggest part of the water system ran bellow the ground. For example, out of 260 miles of the aqueduct system only 30 miles consisted of the visible arched structures. The city of Rome was supplied with water through 11 aqueducts built throughout 500 years. These aqueducts were about 420 – 500 km long with about 47 km above ground. The aqueducts were used to carry water to the mines, the mills and of course the baths. Every great city in the empire was supplied by the aqueduct. The entire system relied upon various gradients and the use of gravity to maintain a continuous flow. The whole idea and the engineering of these aqueducts at the time were remarkable. О | DRAGAN GORGIEV Saints Cyril and Methodius Saints Cyril and Methodius were two Byzantine brothers born in Thessaloniki in the 9th century. They became missionaries of Christianity among the Slavic peoples of Great Moravia and Pannonia. They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet used to transcribe the Old Church Slavonic language. After their deaths, their pupils continued their missionary work among other Slavs. Both brothers are venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as saints with the ЗiЗle Вf EДИals ЗВ Зhe AГВsЗles. • 35. 35 35 Their father was Leo, and their mother was Maria, who may have been a Slav. The two brothers lost their father when Cyril was only fourteen, and the powerful minister Theokristos became their protector. In 862, both brothers were to enter upon the work which gives them their historical importance. That year the Prince Rostislav of Great Moravia requested that the emperor Michael III and the Patriarch Photius send missionaries to evangelize his Slavic subjects. The Emperor quickly chose to send Cyril, accompanied by his brother Methodius. Their first work seems to have been the training of assistants. In 863, they began the task of translating the Bible into a language known as Old Church Slavonic and travelled to Great Moravia to promote it. They enjoyed considerable success in this endeavor. However, they came into conflict with German ecclesiastics who opposed their efforts to create a specifically Slavic liturgy. For the purpose of this mission, they devised the Glagolitic Alphabet, the first alphabet to be used for Slavic manuscripts. The Glagolitic alphabet was suited to match the specific features of the Slavic language and its descendant alphabet, the Cyrillic alphabet, is still used by many languages today. THE MAN YOU SAW IS DRACULA. NOW YOU CAN'T GET OUT EASY. IN THE NEXT ROOM YOU WILL FIND NOTES ON HOW TO GET OUT OF THE CASTLE, BUT YOU MUST BE CAREFULL - IF DRACULA GETS YOU, YOU WILL BECOME A VAMPIRE. The professor demanded to search the castle again, but the crew didn't want to, because it is night and Dracula is awake at night. The professor wanted to let him go in the castle, but the police captured him and they all left the place. They returned to the city and after two days the professor left Romania with his daughter.

A total of 24 students ages 7 – 18 took part in the week-long event, which ended with great success for all participants! The interactive and creative nature of the course was more than enough to keep all participants very interested and engaged in what they were doing. The participants were split into two groups (ages 7 – 12 and 13 – 18, respectively), and according to their age they took part in an array of different brainstorming, writing, and interactive activities. Under Merrilee’s guidance, both AC Stip staff (Dushan and Marija) took the roles of assistant teachers and, along with the help of PCVs Rachel Schaar and Daniel Pickel, ensured that the participants enjoyed the many inspiring tasks and word-play games, helping them channel their creativity into many interesting pieces of writing. For example, the Found Poetry activity consisted of the participants choosing and collecting five or more words randomly scattered throughout the Corner (done by Merrilee and Dushan), which they would later use in their poems or short stories.
  • 53. 53 53 Motivation was kept high as every participant enjoyed the overwhelming fun of the whole course spiced up with some light competitiveness, which helped every kid and teenager invest their best in what was put on paper. Furthermore, an interesting array of prizes was awarded. The Best so Far awards were assigned each day, in order to honor the talent and work of the young writers in several different areas (Best Short Story so Far, Best Haiku so Far, etc.), while the Best of the Best awards were given at the completion of the workshop, which culminated in a total of six collaborative plays, written and enacted by the participants of the course. Finally, the certificates that the U.S. Embassy provided were also awarded to each participant, by both Merrilee and AC Stip staff. As a cherry on top, an Anthology of the writings is also in the making, and will soon be publicly shared.
  • 54. 54 54 To conclude, AC Stip was very glad to have Merrilee Cunningham coming to Stip and helping young writers express themselves, taking their first steps on the road of art’s never-ending journey. Stip’s young writers are more than interested in welcoming Merrilee, the American friend, bard and poet, in their home town again. T TH HE E E EN ND D
