Question 1
1. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products ?
2. The title of the trailer
Our final title for the
trailer ended up being
‘Twisted’
The original title for the trailer
was ‘Creeping into my soul’
After feedback public feedback
we changed the title to ‘Twisted
due to the pictures, storyline
and the idea of the trailer not
correlating together.
We added the title to the end
of the trailer because we
were following the same idea
as the trailer ‘The Roommate’
As a group we decided on using the text
and the red background because we
think it went well with our idea and the
background brought the sense of evil and
blood, which goes with the last shot of
Faye putting a knife to Amy’s neck.
3. The Setting/Location
Our first setting was in
school. The areas in the
school we recorded in
was our common
room, the girls toilet and
outside of our common
room
Then we located to a
setting outside. We went
to a local cafe.
We chose those setting
because it correlated
with our film. It is a
teenage based film so
we thought it would be
suitable for us to do most
shots in our college.
4. Costumes and Props
We didn't actually have
many props but we had
a phone, knife and a
couple pictures.
We decided to get the
knife and the pictures
later on in the making of
our teaser trailer. We
included that to add a
more sinister feel to our
trailer.
We used the phone to
emphasise Amy's
obsession over
Rhiannah. It was used to
build up a form of
tension within the teaser
trailer.
5. Camerawork With our
camerawork, eve
ry shot had a
specific purpose.
For example to
show Amy's
obsession, Amy
acting weird or to
show how the
storyline builds
up.
We tried to follow The
Roomate's trailer so
we decided to include
the shot in the library
of Amy's eye showing
through the books. We
really liked that shot
because it portrayed
how Amy's personality
is supposed to be.
Most of our shots were two
shots because most of our
teaser trailer included
dialogue, we also included a
lot of shot reverse shots
through our camera work to
show the characters during
their dialogue too.
6. Editing to create the ‘3 part
structure’
We edited our teaser trailer to create the 3 part structure by
showing the storyline build up. The first part of the teaser
trailer is just mirroring Amy's weird habbits such as some of
the things she says and the way she acts. For example the
way she stares at Rhiannah as they take the photo etc.
Then the second part of our trailer is edited to show Amy
actually acting different/ill. This part is structured to build up
the suspense within the trailer. The final part of the
structure of the teaser trailer is to show Amy actually
attacking Faye. We decided to have the peak of our teaser
trailer at the end to leave the audience confused and
hopefully wanting more. Allowing them to ask questions on
whether the whole situation with Amy, Faye and Rhiannah
gets resolved or not.
7. Captions
With our captions we
used the black
background and the
red text because it
went with our title.
With have each
word reflecting
because it went
with the concept
of our teaser
trailer of
everything being
'twisted'
Our captions
continuously
appear throughout
the trailer because
again was trying to
show that we were
following The
Roomates trailer.
The captions are included to
explain the story line as
well, we used this idea to follow
the conventions of thriller films
such as Saw, The Roomate
(which we was following) and
many others
We used the colour red for
the captions to insinuate
that there will possibly be
gore and blood involved in
the film allowing there to
be space for the audience
imagination to create
scenes
8. Genre and how the trailer suggests
it
• Our genre of our trailer is thriller. The trailer suggests that through the title firstly.
Thrillers normally have a very 'twisted' plot whether it being about stalkers or serial
killers. The fact that we named the trailer 'Twisted' shows that we have actually
thought about how thrillers are presented so instead of being specific about what
our trailer is about we generalised it in a sense. Also the trailer used captions to
explain the plot likewise to most thriller movies. The red background and blac.k
text within it shows that there is likely to be blood and suspense just like other
trailers. Mainly our trailers plot suggests the genre is thriller because we believe
that the trailer hopefully leaves people a bit uneasy from seeing Amy loosing
sanity in the toilet, showing her weird and possessive obsession over Rhiannah
and more just like a thriller film/trailer is supposed to
9. How key character traits suggests it
• We showed our key characters firstly through the
amount of time they had on screen. We think we showed
the fact that Rhiannah and Amy were key characters
because of the storyline was based around them mainly
and they were shown constantly throughout the trailer.
Also we showed that the were main characters through
one being 'good' and 'bad'. In most thrillers there is
normally either a good/innocent character and a
villian/bad character. We represented Rhiannah as the
innocent and good character clearly through her
constantly being nice to Amy and staying with her seen
as she was the 'new girl'. And we mirrored Amy to be the
bad character through showing her attacking
Faye, showing her acting abnormal and through her
10. Special Effects
Within the trailer we used quite a variety of special effects such as turning shots
black and white, fades in and out we edited the sound to have Amy's voice echo
and repeat after a specific word and many more. We decided on these special
effects because again we viewed and analysed The Roomate trailer and
discussed what we think would look good in our trailer. Attempting to keep it
original to us but obvious that we have grasped our idea from another trailer.
11. Length of trailer
The length of our trailer was hard to get exactly
like the actual length of a teaser trailer but we
managed to do it in the end. We had to do a lot of
editing in order for it to be one minute and them
few seconds. We struggled to cut out all the
seconds in shots that weren't needed but we finally
managed to do it. The captions helped because it
explained the storyline so if it became confusing
we were able to add a caption to help explain
whats going on.
12. Magazine
The magazine followed Empire's conventions in a
variety of ways. For example Empire magazine
always has the image covering the magazine title.
With the image we used for our cover we were
able to follow that convention. Also with the
placing of where the trailer title is also follows
Empires conventions. So we think we made it
obvious that we analysed how Empire's layout is
and how it correlated with what we were aiming to
do. This enabled us to make the final decision that
we were going to use Empire magazine for our
Magazine cover. Also we thin that our magazine
cover shows the conventions of a thriller also
because we have kept the same text as the text in
the trailer, keeping continuity. Also the image of
Rhiannah, Faye and Amy shows that there's
something not right with these three girls creating
an uneasy feel due to Amy's facial expression.
13. Poster
We analysed a lot of film posters before
making our own poster and copied the
structure of the conventions. We decided to
place the names of people acting above their
picture and we did this because this is how we
had seen it structured out in majority of posters
we looked at. Also this allowed us to add the
title, release date and web link for the film at
the bottom of the image. We ended up with this
as our final image as our poster because that
is how we had seen it structured therefore we
think that we followed the conventions properly
and exhibited them well. Also we think our
poster follows the conventions of a thriller film
poster by having the dark red the of
background and also the way we have kept the
continuity between colours enabling people to
see that the magazine cover and film poster
correlate.
