Editor's Notes
Hello, my name is Renee MacCrimman and I will be presenting today’s topic. Our topic for today is Stress management in the workplace. I’m sure everyone in this room will agree that at some point, they have experienced more stress than usual at work. It happens to the best of us, it doesn’t mean that you cannot handle your job.
I’m sure that some, if not all of you would know if you feel different at work due to more stress. If you are unsure, these are some of the common signs and symptoms of excessive stress. I know that on a personal level, the sign that plagues me the most is the loss of concentration. Stress affects everyone differently, so these signs and symptoms are more or less a guideline.
Although there are several reasons that people get stress, these are a few job-related causes. These days, I think we can all agree that the fear of losing the job is always on our minds.
It has been no secret that exercise and eating right can help you physically and mentally. So, it is natural to think that it will also help us reduce, eliminate, or cope with stress as well. Aside of helping us with stress, taking care of ourselves will help us stay focused and increase productivity on the job. Our attitudes and personable skills will improve as well.
Knowing what you are going to do and when will help you to break apart your workload into more manageable tasks. These tips are simple but effective. If you need help with organization, always remember that there are co-workers, and even your boss or manager, that can and will help you. Never assume no one will help and that you are alone.
Procrastinating may not seem like a problem at the time, but it can become one very quickly. If you put off work for another day, it will pile up with that day’s current tasks. It also makes you look unprofessional. Think back to high school. It was no different to work on assignments on a daily basis until all of them were finished.
Knowing your specific emotional level will help you decide how to proceed with stress management. How you react to emotional situations at work can make or break you. Again, this is something you can ask others to help you with. Having others tell you where you may need help with your emotional awareness is constructive to developing a plan if you are having trouble doing so on your own.
Everyone falls prey to bad office habits once in a while. Remember that no one expects you to do everything perfectly, but having a handle on things is always a good idea. It means that you are taking your job seriously and you want to do the best you can.
Periodically think to yourselves if there is something at work that is beginning to stress you out. Recognizing it early will help you eliminate it quickly before it becomes out of control. I can’t express enough that communication is always a good way to help reduce stress.
Using humor in the workplace will lighten the mood and provides a friendlier atmosphere for everyone. It always will help develop relationships with co-workers. “Laughter is the best medicine” does actually apply when dealing with stress.
I hope this presentation has enlightened you and I would like to end this meeting by answering any questions that anyone may have. If there is no questions, then I would like to thank everyone for their participation.
