Burnout syndrome
Burnout syndrome is a phenomenon characterized by fatigue, frustration,
helplessness, exhaustion related to heavy, work-related stress that is not managed
properly.
In healthcare workers it may show as being exhausted, irritated, cynical, negativity or
decrease in works efficiency.
It usually occurs to healthcare professionals that work in very stressful environment
or branch of medicine like:
- Oncology
- Palliative care
- Pediatrics
- ER
Early symptoms
There are multiple early signs that may show that one is on a road to developing burnout
syndrome.
- Every day is a bad day
- Caring about your work or home life seems like a total waste of time and energy
- You’re chronicly exhausted
- The majority of the day one is spending on tasks that are mind-numbing, dull or
overwhelming
- You feel like no matter what you do, it makes no difference and you are not
appreciated
Physical signs and symptoms
One might suffer from several physical signs:
- Feeling tired and drained most of the time
- Lowered immunity, frequent illnesses
- Frequent headaches or muscle pain
- Change in appetite or sleep habits
Emotional signs and symptoms
Might suffer from emotional distress signs:
- Sense of failure and self-doubt
- Feeling helpless, trapped and defeated
- Detachment, feeling alone in the world
- Loss of motivation
- Increasingly cynical and negative outlook
- Decreased satisfaction and sense of accomplishments
Behavioral signs and symptoms
Or might change behaviour in order to cope:
- Withdrawing from responsibilities
- Isolating yourself from others
- Procrastinating, taking longer to get things done
- Using food, drugs or alcohol to cope
- Taking out your frustration on others
- Skipping work or coming in late and leaving early

Recognize: The first and most important of dealing with burnout is to recognize it.
Watch for warning signs of burnout!
Reverse: Undo the damage by seeking support and managing stress
Resilience: Build your resilience to stress by taking care of your physical and
emotional health
