  3. 3. WHAT IS STRESS?  Stress can be defined as the brain's response to any demand. ~ National Institute of Mental Health
  4. 4. SIGNS OF STRESS  Emotional:  Easily agitated and/or overwhelmed  Feeling depressed, lonely, and/or low self-esteem  Struggle to relax  Physical:  Low energy  Upset stomach, nausea, constipation, diarrhea  Insomnia  Cognitive:  Worrying  Racing thoughts  Inability to focus

Physical Emotional Mental Social Headaches Anxiety Forgetfulness Isolation Teeth grinding Frustration Poor concentration Loneliness Fatigue Depression Negative attitude Lashing out Insomnia Tension Lethargy Lowered sex drive Back aches Mood swings Boredom Nagging Stomach problems Irritability Alcohol/drug use Crying spells

WHAT ARE STRESS MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES?  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  Talk through it with someone.  Get to the heart of the problem.  Find a relaxation exercise that works for you.  Get away from the stressor and establish boundaries.  Don’t add to your stress with poor health decisions.  Practice time management.
  7. 7. WHAT ARE COPING STRATEGIES FOR STRESS?  Physical:  Make sure you get enough sleep7+ hours  Exercise regularly.  Eat a healthy, well balanced diet.  Smile and laugh daily.  Practice stress management techniques.

WHAT ARE COPING STRATEGIES FOR STRESS?  Cognitive:  Plan on making mistakes and learn from them.  Learn to accept things that you cannot change.  Set realistic expectations and goals for yourself and others.  Get some perspective on the situation.  Practice stress management techniques.

WHAT ARE COPING STRATEGIES FOR STRESS?  Actions:  Take time to get organized.  Prioritize your to do list and keep up.  Break larger tasks into smaller tasks.  Keep your life balanced.  Participate in activities that you find mindful and relaxing.  Focus on your goals.  Learn to say no!  Practice stress management techniques.
