This music video for "Touch" by Little Mix uses various camera shots and editing techniques. Throughout the video, mid-shots and long shots are primarily used to film the girls dancing together during the chorus. The lighting gives the background settings pastel colors that blend with the bright white light. The revealing costumes emphasize the girls' assets with minimal makeup and jewelry. The video represents the girls as strong and independent rather than submissive, challenging common stereotypes of women.
2. CAMERA SHOTS AND EDITING TECHNIQUES
This music video starts with a pan of the girls body which ends in a mid-shot
from women to women.
Various different angles are used throughout both low and high angles which
emphasizes the sexual characteristics that this video has. Throughout only two
out of three camera shots are used and those are mid-shots and long shots;
when the girls are seen dancing together during the chorus it is mostly long
shots which are used.
Whilst this is happening both zoom in and zoom out are used as well as
alternative angles in order to make the music video constantly moving. Due to
the artists being a group including four people a lot of cuts are involved when
switching between each girl that is singing.
4. LIGHTING AN MISE-EN-SCENE
This music video has a unorthodox technique
when it comes to lighting. They use a normal
bright light but the setting and location that
they are in makes it look completely
differently. The four different pastel coloured
backgrounds make the different colours melt
into the natural white light. We therefore see
pastel yellow, blue, green and pink.
The costumes that the girls wear are all extremely
revealing, high boots, and virtually leotards barely
covering their behinds. The clothing is also
emphasizing their assets. Makeup and hair is kept
natural and jewellery is kept minimal for example
no large earrings of necklaces.
5. REPRESENTATION
The way in which these girls are represented in this music video are very countertypical to the
common stereotypes of women. Women are usually seen as submissive, physically weak and
innocent. However in this music video the girls seem to be the complete opposite of submissive,
and the men featured in the video don’t seem to be dominating in any way; as well as this they
seem strong as well as independent. The clothes that they are all wearing as well are
countertypical to those that women were expected to wear.
6. MEDIA THEORYSven E Carlsson believe that there are two catergories that music videos can fall under:
1. Performance – where the audience are about to see the artists singing and dancing throughout the video,
2. Conceptual – is where the audience watch something other than the artist throughout the video. It is clear that this particular video is a performance
piece wherethe girl band are performing throughout.
Wolf (1990) theory suggests that women in the media are presented as sex
objects to be consumed by what Mulvey calls the ‘male gaze’. This music
video is a prime example of this, which endless sexual images and dance
moves of the four girl are being used to entice male audiences.
According to Kilbourne in 1995 the media presents women as tall, thin, size zero
mannequins. This video contradicts this theory with the subject being curvaceous
and although they have an extremely flawless appearance, they do not reflect
what could be considered a ‘mannequin’ or ’barbie.’
Dismemberment: particularly focused in on the female subject’s body e.g: chest, legs, bum etc. This is an advertising
theory presented by Goffman and his theory of gender representation.
