4. Stage 2: Instrumental
Purpose Orientation
Behavior is determined
again by consequence.
The individual focuses on
receiving rewards or
satisfying personal needs.
5. Stage 3: Good Boy/ Nice
Girl Orientation
Behavior is determined by
social approval. The
individual wants to
maintain or win the
affection and approval of
others by being a good
person.
6. Stage 4: Law and Order
Orientation
Social rules and laws determined
behavior. The individual now takes into
consideration a larger perspectives
that of society laws. Moral decision
making becomes more than
consideration of close ties to others.
The individual believes that rules and
laws maintain social order that is worth
preserving.
7. Level 3: Post-
conventional or
Principled Level
In the post-conventional level, the
individual moves beyond the
perspectives of his or her own society.
Morality is defined in terms of abstract
principles and values that apply to all
situations and society. The individual
attempts to take the perspective of all
individuals.
8. Stage 5: Social Contract
Orientation
Individual rights determine behavior.
The individual views laws and rules as
flexible tools for improving human
purposes. That is given the right
situation, there are exceptions to rules.
When laws are not consistent with
individual right and the interest of the
majority, they do not bring about good
for people and alternatives should be
considered.
9. Stage 6: Universal
Ethical Principle
Orientation
According to Kohlberg’s this is the
highest stage of functioning. But, he
claimed that some individual will never
reach this level. At this stage, the
appropriate action is determined by
one’s self-chosen ethical principles of
conscience. This type or reasoning
involves taking the perspective of
every person or group that could
potentially be affected by the decision.
11. The moral dilemma in that
Kohlberg’s Heinz Dilemma is the
part where Heinz was stuck
between two options, whether he
would steal from the pharmacy
laboratory to save the life of his
wife but after that he will get into
prison for many years and
another scenario he would not
steal and get in jail but his wife
will die. It is most difficult
situations in which Heinz really
have to weigh both options.
12. If your were in the same situation as
Mr. Heinz, what will you do? Support
your answer.
13. What I will do is ask for help from
another person or the company I
work for, borrow money from the
boss or the company or in
anyone else and I will just return
it even if I owe more interest than
losing my wife because money is
returned that is, life is limited.
14. How is Kohlberg's Stages of Moral
Development related to Piaget's
Theory of Cognitive
Development?
15. Piaget's Theory addresses four distinct
phases, ranging from zero to eighteen years
of life. It focuses on how they think at each
step. Lawrence Kohlberg relates Stages of
Moral Development to Piaget's Theory of
Cognitive Development by interviewing boys
between the ages of 10 and 16. Kohlberg
investigates how the boys rationalize their
actions decision in a variety of hypothetical
moral quandaries When we develop, we learn
a variety of things, from zero to many. It is our
decision whether to do the right or bad thing,
and it is also dependent on our thinking or
moral problem.
16. Below are some Universal Abstract
Principle observed by individuals
who reached the 6th Stage of
Moral Development
17. DIGNITY
Dignity is a formal seriousness of
demeanor, the attribute of being
honorable, or a sense of self-worth.
One example is Finn's position, in
which he first considers the things
or penalties that may happen to
him if he helps.
18. EQUALITY
Equality is defined as the state of being
fairness of all the situation. The dilemma of
Mary is an illustration of this since he wants to
assist Tom but she believes that if she helps
Tom, she may become a victim eventually.
She believes Tom will be able to assist her in
the future. It's a type of equality because
when Mary is in danger, Tom may also hell
her. There is also a proverb that what you do
to your neighbor/people will be done to you.
