2. STEPS FOR LAYING VITRIFIED FLOOR TILES
First of all, select an area for tiling.
Calculate the quantity of tile and to avoid shade variation arrange
tile boxes of the same batch number.
Unbox tiles, check for colour variation and copy arrow marks by
pencil from the back side to the finished side of the tile.
Clean the area and damp it properly.
3. Prepare water-cement slurry and sprinkle it on the floor.
Mix mortar as recommended, by adding a small quantity
of water.
4. Fix floor level marks as per required for flooring.
Spread mortar on floor as per floor level marks (mortar thickness
ranging from 25mm to 40mm, if thickness exceeds, Screeding or PCC is
recommended).
After proper levelling of mortar check the slope with the help of
building level. Precaution to be taken to remove hard lumps or gitti if
found on the surface of mortar as they will prevent tile compaction or
even tiles may crack.
5. Start placing tiles in such a direction that all arrows of a row will be
in one direction ( place spacers in case joints are required)
After placing check tiles for proper adjustments, pattern, grooves
and level.
After checking the pattern, joints, tucks, level and arrow marks lift
tiles one by one for final fixing.
6. Remove first tile and put cement slurry in a ratio appx 1:1.5 ( 1
cement, 1.5 water) on base mortar with the help of a trowel.
Make cut marks with trowel in mortar in a direction parallel to tile laying.
Cut marks should be from one end of the tile to the other, i.e. for full size
of tile both ways.
7. Pour cement slurry again over the marked mortar with the help
of a trowel ( pouring should be done with the help of a trowel
otherwise direct pouring makes the surface uneven)
Now place the first tile over the mortar bed and press gently to adjust
grove with the adjacent tile.
8. Press tile with blows of rubber hammer in such a way that slurry and
mortar below the tile get proper compaction. The first tile should be
compacted to maximum level because the rest of the floor level will
be by following the first fixed tile. Check the level if ok then
proceed further.
Now lift other tiles one by one and repeat
the process.
9. Wipeout excess slurry from the tile top and check tile sides with
the help of a small tile piece whether tile joints are in level or not.
Proper care to be taken for Chaukhat offsets. Use counter gauge for
marking.
Restrict movement over fixed tiles for a minimum period of 24 hours.
Floor grouting is to be done after the final setting of tiles.
Clear joints of tiles with joint scrapper tool.
10. Prepare a thick paste of grouting material.
Fill joints with the help of a rubber trowel and leave for
30minutes.
Clean out excess grout with sponge trowel in rotational movement
by placing trowel at 45 degree angle.
11. Mop the floor after setting of grout.
Following methods can also be adapted to maintain uniform joints.
12. GENERAL DEFECTS FOUND IN TILES –
Cement slurry not applied properly, source of Hollow sound in tiles.
Tiles should not sound hollow
Floor tiles near Door Frames should be properly cut
The size of the waste jail should be proper
Joints of tiles to be proper
