What BIM is really about?
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a collaborative process
around an intelligent representation of a building project,
integrating physical, geometrical, and functional data. The main
purpose of BIM is to increase the quality, integrity, and
coherence of the information during the whole life cycle of the
building, and to make the exchange of this information easier
among the project team. Given the urgent need for low-energy
affordable buildings, governments spur BIM adoption by
construction professionals.
The growing interest raised by IFCs
Collaboration of project teams, or even between colleagues
within the same office, requires a common language to
exchange building information models. Such a standard for
interoperability exists: the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) is an
open, standard (ISO 10303-21) and platform-neutral file format
specification developed by the buildingSMART alliance® to
promote the collaboration between all parties involved in the
construction project.
