13. A Ruthless Killer
It killed 100 million people in the 20th century. It takes nearly 6 million lives
annually. The death toll will increase to 8 million by 2030. By the end of the 21st century it
will have claimed 1 billion lives. The culprit of these staggering numbers of deaths, as
reported by WHO in 2013, is tobacco smoking. Tobacco smoke contains poisonous
ingredients like addictive nicotine, carbon monoxide, tar, and more than 5000 chemical
compounds, all causing cancer in body parts, chronic bronchitis, heart disease, stroke, and
other diseases that slowly kill smokers and passive smokers. The death toll, however, is
preventable. Millions of tobacco smokers’ lives can be saved by controlling tobacco use, and
assisting smokers to quit along with preventing the young from starting smoking.
Controlling tobacco use must be carried out by enacting bans on tobacco
advertising, promotion, and sponsorship. The ban should apply to advertising via mass
media that are seen by many people, or using promotional goods such as T-shirts, hats, or
umbrellas, and to sponsorship of sporting events. Research has shown that bans on tobacco
advertising, promotion, and sponsorship result in a drop in consumption. In the UK, it is
estimated that banning tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship has triggered a
2.5% drop in the number of deaths from smoking, saving as many as 300 lives per year. If
all countries over the world enforce such as a ban the reduction in dying smokers will be
very significant.
14. To assist smokers to quit and to discourage young smokers require
necessary steps. First, smoking cessation treatments should be given free and
be easily available for those who want to quit. Next, increasing cigarette prices
by imposing heavy taxes in the product will encourage adult smokers to quit
and discourage young people from starting smoking. Finally, continued mass
media campaigns informing people of the dangers of smoking and informing
them of resources to help them quit will certainly cut the number of smokers.
Because anti-smoking efforts in some countries have had positive
results, governments the world over should follow suit. They can save millions
of lives by eliminating the ruthless killer – tobacco smoking. They can make
the next generation tobacco-free.• Connecti
