Dynamics of Destructive Polarisation in Mainstream and Social Media: The Case...
Questionnaire results and bar charts
1. Questionnaire
November 15, 2011
1. Gender?
Female 1. Gender
This was a simple male/female check box
answer. From the results I was given, I found
Male out that music magazines would appeal to
both the male and female audience.
0 2 4 6 8 10 12
2. Age?
2. Age
31-35 The answers for this ranged from 16-35, which
was what I was hoping for as this is my
planned age range for this music magazine
16-20
that I will be creating. The results I received
showed that the magazine would appeal to
16-20 year olds more, but also the age range
0 5 10 15 20 would stretch out to 31-35 year olds.
3. Do you read music magazines?
3. Do you read music
No magazines?
Most people answered yes for this question,
but a large proportion answered no. Asking
random people to complete a questionnaire
Yes would have had these expected results. I need
to make sure that the magazine would appeal
to those who wouldn’t normally buy
0 2 4 6 8 10 magazines, as well as those who do. This
question is biased towards those who do read
music magazines.

4. What is your favourite rock magazine?
Rolling Stone 4. What is your favourite rock
magazine?
I expected Kerrang! To be the highest rating
The Clash
answer and it was. Like Kerrang!, Rocksound
is also an English magazine so this had a few
Guitar World
results. Even though Rolling Stone is an
American magazine, it is a rock genre
RockSound magazine, which relates to the magazine that
I want to be creating; it had feedback which I
Kerrang! was surprised about. With Kerrang! Being
the highest rated answer, I need to make my
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 magazine of a similar style to Kerrang! To
make sure it will appeal to the audience.
5. How often do you buy music magazines?
5. How often do you buy
Not Often
magazines?
I was expecting the highest result to be
Annually weekly, but it was monthly. I also had to
put an extra bar in the chart labelled ‘Not
Often’ because there were people who
Monthly answered my questionnaire who didn’t by
any music magazine on a regular basis, just
every now and then. When creating my
Weekly magazine, I will make sure that it’s a
monthly magazine.

6. Who is your favourite band/artist?
Because I am creating a rock magazine, I put the names of a few rock bands which I
would have preferred more feedback from. I also put in an extra box where people
could fill in a band or artist themselves. Although there was one answer I could use,
most of them were current artists who aren’t based in the rock genre. From the
feedback that I was given, Nickelback is a popular band, which people would like to
read information about in this magazine.

I left the answer open for this, so I
Noise
wasn’t aware of what feedback I
Goths
would be getting. Looking at the
Loud information I was given, most

Hardcore and ‘Heavy’. These would be good
Meaningful words to use as part of the title for
the magazine.

I chose to use this question,

helpful to use in being able to

9. What do you like about music magazines?
Posters
Give-aways 9. What do you like about
Info On New Albums music magazines?
Interesting I left this answer open, and the
Tour Dates feedback I got was expected. Most of
Gigs the answers were similar. The feedback
Gossip I was given tells me that most people
New Music like to read the interviews in music
magazines, so when I create my double
Interviews
page spread article, I need to make it
Reviews
an interview.

10. What do you dislike about music magazines?
10. What do you dislike about
Similar music magazines?
Large Articles
I left this answer open also, and the feedback I got from
this was helpful. The highest rating answer I got for this
Can Be Boring was adverts. Having adverts in a music magazine that have
nothing to do with music can be seen as a waste of a page
Adverts
in the magazine, which could be put to better use. This
feedback tells me that no one would like adverts in the
0 1 2 3 4 5
magazine, so I need to make sure none go in so it will
appeal to my audience.
11. What do you like to find out/read about in music magazines?
Scandle 11. What do you like to
find out/read about in
New Bands
music magazines?
New Albums This answer was more narrowed down as
I put in the answer boxes myself. The
A Fans Say
highest rated answer is ‘New Bands’.
Feature Articles Looking at this feedback, the answer
leans more towards new bands, so I
Tour Dates should put some information in about
new upcoming bands, so it will appeal to
0 2 4 6 8 10 12
the readers.

12. How much would you be willing to spend on a music magazine?
12. How much would you be
£7.00 +
willing to spend on a music
£5.50 - £7.00 magazine?
Most of the answers ranged around £1.50 - £3.00. This
£3.50 - £5.00
price range is similar to Kerrang! As that magazine is
£1.50 - £3.00 priced at £2.20 normally, and £2.70 when there is a CD
that comes with the magazine for that week. When
0 - £1.00
making the front cover, I will make sure the price is
similar to Kerrang! But in the price range that was
0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14
rated the highest.
13. How many pages do you think a music magazine should have?
200+ pages
151-200 pages 13. How many pages do you think
a music magazine should have?
101-150 pages The highest result for this was 51-100 pages, which
seems like a good magazine size. You can get the
51-100 pages
information in it that you need, but not too much space
0-50 pages which would be filled with irrelevant adverts.
0 2 4 6 8 10 12
14. If you could enter a competition that was advertised in a music
magazine, would you?
No 14. If you could enter a
competition that was advertised in
a music magazine, would you?
More people said yes to this question, where as, near
Yes about the same amount said no. Looking at the
feedback I received, yes received more answers so I
will put a competition in the magazine.

7. Questionnaire
November 15, 2011
15. If there were posters in the magazine, would you use them?
15. If there were posters in the
Depends who it is
magazine, would you use them?
No Most people answered yes for this question than no.
There was also another person who added ‘Depends
Yes who it is’ which I thought was a good point to make,
so I added that into the bar chart above. Looking at
0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 the results, the magazine should have centrefolds of
posters.
16. Where would you expect a music magazine to be sold?
Local Shop 16. Where would you expect a
music magazine to be sold?
Music Store e.g. HMV
I know that music magazines can be purchased where
ever other magazines are sold, so for this I wasn’t
Supermarket
expecting a certain answer. The answers are biased
0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14
towards the Supermarket, which is mainly where
music magazines are sold.
17. What type of feature article interests you?
Asking questions 17. What type of feature
Bands getting back together article interests you?
I got a lot of feedback from this question that
New album/tour I can use when I come to writing one out for
the double page spread. When creating the
Articles about the band
double page spread article, I need to make
0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 sure I put in as much information about the
band as possible.
18. What type of feature article would you not be interested in?
Scandle 18. What type of feature
Asking questions
article would you not be
interested in?
Bands getting back together This question also gave me a lot of feedback for
what not to write too much about in my double
New album/tour
page spread. When making the double page
Articles about the band spread, I need to leave out any information about
bands getting back together, because this is
0 2 4 6 8 10 12 information what the target audience would not
want to read about.

19. What do you like about rock magazines?
Information on albums
19. What do you like
Tour Dates
about rock magazines?
For this question most people answered
Articles more than one. The highest rated answer
was posters and pictures, which I wasn’t
Content expecting. When creating the magazine, I
need to make sure there are visual
Posters/pictures
elements which would suit the target
audience.
0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14
20. What do you dislike about rock magazines?
Information on albums
Tour Dates 20. What do you dislike
about rock magazines?
Articles Like question 19, most people answered more
than one. The highest rated answer for this was
Content articles which I was also not expecting. When I am
creating my double page spread, I need to make
Posters/pictures sure that I write enough, but not too much that it
would put some readers off.
