Elizabeth Gaskell was a 19th century English novelist and writer born in 1810 in London. She married Unitarian minister William Gaskell in 1832 and they settled in Manchester, where she was influenced by the industrial surroundings. Gaskell began her writing career by contributing to magazines and gradually published more novels and short stories. Some of her most famous works include Mary Barton, a novel about the working class in Manchester, Cranford, about life in a small English town, and North and South, about the social changes caused by industrialization. She also wrote biographies and was a prolific writer until her death in 1865.

Gaskell was born Elizabeth Cleghorn Stevenson on 29
September 1810 in Lindsey Row, Chelsea, London now 93
Cheyne Walk. She was the daughter of two devout Unitarians,
William Stevenson and Elizabeth Holland. She was youngest of
eight children; only she and her brother Jhon survived infancy.
After her mothers death in 1811 she was brought up by her aunt
Hannah Lumb, in Knutsford, Cheshire.She died on 12th
November 1865,at Holybourne, United kingdom , due to a heart
attack.

LIFE
On 30 August 1832 Elizabeth married Unitarian minister
William Gaskell, in Knutsford. The Gaskells then settled in
Manchester, where William was the minister at Cross Street
Unitarian Chapel and longest-serving Chair of the Portico
library. Manchester’s industrial surroundings and books
borrowed from the library influenced Elizabeth’s writing in
industrial genre. They had six children.
4. WRITING CAREER
Gaskell began by contributing to magazines and
periodicals, where she gained recognitions for her stories . In
July 1841 the Gaskells travelled to Belgium and Germany.
German literature came to have strong influence on her short
stories, the first of which she published in 1847 as Libbie
marsh’s Three Eras, in Howitt’s journal pseudonym “Cotton
Mather Mills”. Her first novel, “Mary Barton,” was published in
1848 received critical acclaim. This success led to the
publication of her other notable works, including “North and
South,” “Cranford,” and “Wives and Daughters”.
Elizabeth was fortunate to have the support of her husband,
who encouraged her to publish her works under her own name
.This was not common for female writers during that time.

WORKS
Elizabeth Gaskell’s works often explored social issues and
the lives of women, providing insightful and realistic portrayals
of Victorian society. Unitarianism urges comprehension and
tolerance toward all religions and even though Gaskell tried to
keep her own beliefs hidden, she felt strongly about these
values which permeated her works; in North and South,
“Margaret the churchwomen, her father the dissenter, Higgins
the Infield, knelt down together. it did them no harm.”

Mary barton
Mary Barton: A Tale of Manchester Life is the first novel by English author
Elizabeth Gaskell, published in 1848. The story is set in the English city of
Manchester between 1839 and 1842, and deals with the difficulties fased by
the Victorian working class.
Cranford
Cranford is an episodic novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell. Its first
appeared in instruments in the magazine household words, then was
published with minor revisions as a book with the title Canford in1853. The
work slowly became popular and from the start of the 20th century it saw a
number of dramatic treatments for the stage, the radio and T.V..

North and South is a social novel published in 1854-55. With Wives and
Daughters (1865) and Cranford (1853),it is one of her best-known novels and
was adapted for television three times (1966,1975 and 2004).
The life of Charlotte Bronte
The life of Charlotte Bronte is the posthumous biography of Charlotte
Bronte by fellow English novelists Elizabeth Gaskell. The first edition was
published in 1857 by Smith, elder & Co. A major soure was the hundred of
letters by Bronte to her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey.
