Adverbs
An Adverb tells us in what way something is done. Many
adverbs are formed from an adjective+ -ly:
Adjective: bad careful dangerous heavy quick quiet safe slow
Adverb: badly carefully dangerously heavily quickly quietly safely slowly
Do you drive fast? No, I drive slowly and carefully.
Note The adverbs hard, fast, and well are exceptions to
the –ly rule.
3. Language in Context
Change the following adjectives to adverbs, and use them in the
appropriate sentence: heavy,powerful,soft,reckless,wonderful.
1.George is a bad driver. He drives _____________.
2.Mary is a great cook. She cooks______________.
3.The hurricane’s winds blew ______________ and they destroyed
houses.
4.We couldn’t go out of the house because it was raining________.

4. Phrases with –ing
Use phrases with –ing to describe people and say what they
were doing at particular time or to give additional information
about something.
Do you know the girl talking to Peter?
(= who is talking to Peter)
The road leading up the mountain is dangerous.
(=that leads to the mountains)

5. Phrases with Past Participles
Phrases with past participles have a passive meaning.
All the people invited to the party wore costumes.
(=who were invited to the party)
The money stolen in the robbery was found by the police.
(=that was stolen in the robbery)

7. Relative Clauses
The car that was in the accident was a total wreck.
(Relative pronoun as subject of clause)
The car that I bought cost a lot of money.
(Relative pronoun as object of clause- that is the object of
the verb bought)
In clauses with that as an object, that can be
omitted: The car (that) I met was from Australia.

9. Ashley: I don’t like driving very much.
Tim: I don’t either. I prefer to go to work by subway every day.
Ashley: I get so annoyed in traffic, especially when the driver
who is in front of me is talking on a cell phone and is
driving slowly. That makes me mad.
Tim: Drivers who are rude or impatient really me, and I get mad
when drivers don’t follow the rules. Some drivers get
impatient when the light turns green and the car in front
of them does not go immediately. They start to honk
their horns. That irritates me!
Ashley: What about pedestrians at intersections? Instead of
crossing the street quickly, they walk leisurely as if they
had all the time in the world.

10. Tim: What annoys me the most in traffic is when there’s
someone who is tailgating you know, when someone is
driving right up to your back bumper. I feel like slamming
on the brakes and letting them crash into the rear of my
