This study aims to identify the challenges faced by science teachers at Carrascal National High School in implementing limited face-to-face classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to health protocols, students were no longer allowed to attend school in-person and shifted to distance learning. However, issues arose with distance learning such as lack of funding, difficulty with self-study, and parents unable to guide their children. As a result, the Department of Education authorized limited face-to-face classes in low-risk areas. The study will survey science teachers to determine their profiles, challenges in planning instruction, delivering lessons, classroom management, and student assessment under the new learning modality. The results could help improve science education implementation given

3. RATIONALE
During the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, the educational system
of the Philippines shifted to distance learning modalities. Students are not
allowed to have a face to face encounter with their teachers at school due to
the implemented health protocols. However, it has been found that some
issues and concerns arouse during the implementation of Modular Distance
Learning. School lack funding in the production and delivery of modules;
students struggle with self-studying, and parents lack knowledge to
academically guide their children. These issues and concerns have led the
Department of Education to call for the implementation of limited face to face
classes on areas with low risk of the pandemic. Education Secretary Leonor
Magtolis Briones has authorized all regional directors to commence the
progressive expansion of phase of face-to-face classes for both public and
private schools. Identified schools in Surigao del Sur are already
implementing the limited face to face classes, including Carrascal National
High School.
4. Major adjustments in the modality of learning can have impact not
only to the students but also to the teachers, who are considered as primary
implementers of the learning modality. New arrangements and procedures
are introduced among the teachers as to the planning for instruction,
learning facilitation, and assessment of learning. These changes brought
impact as to how teachers plan and conduct science lessons.
This study is proposed to identify the challenges encountered by
science teachers in the implementation of limited face to face classes. The
focus of this study is to identify challenges of the science teachers in terms
of planning for instruction, delivery of instruction, classroom management
and assessment of learning. Results of this study will serve as basis for
planning for adjustments and improvement of the implementation of science
education in school, given the current learning modality.
5. OBJECTIVES
The general goal of the study is to determine the challenges faced by the science
teachers in Carrascal National High School in the implementation of limited face to face
classes.
The specific objectives of the study are to:
1. gather information on the profile of the science teachers in Carrascal National High School
in terms of age, sex, area of specialization, number of years in service
2. gather information on the challenges encountered by science teachers in terms of
planning for instruction, delivery of instruction, classroom management and assessment of
learning.
3. determine if there is significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and the
challenges they encountered in the conduct of limited face to face classes.
4. recommend measures or ways to enhance the implementation of limited face to face
classes in Carrascal National High School
7. METHODOLOGY
Research Locale
The study will be conducted at Carrascal National High School, one of the
secondary schools in Carrascal District, Division of Surigao del Sur. The school is located
along the national highway of Gamuton, Carrascal, Surigao del Sur, Philippines.
Ethical Considerations and Permits
Permission to conduct the study will be secured by sending a communication
letter to the office of the principal of Carrascal National High School, asking for approval to
conduct a study in the said school and to utilize select teachers as respondents of the
study. Consent forms will also be given to the select teachers asking their approval to
become respondents. Utmost confidentiality of the data will be observed during the
conduct of the study.
8. Determination of Sample Respondents
The study will utilize purposive sampling in identifying the respondents. For this
method, only the teachers of who are handling science classes in Carrascal National High
School will be determined as respondents. These teachers can either be science majors
or non-science majors, handling science subjects in junior high school or senior high
school.
Data Collection Using Survey Questionnaire
A researcher-made questionnaire will be used in collecting the data. The
questionnaire will undergo validation with a set of experts in the field. This questionnaire is
of two parts; checklist and series of questions. The checklist will be used to gather data on
the profile of the respondents and the challenges that they encounter in the
implementation of limited face to face classes. The series of questions will focus on the
suggested measures of the teachers in improving the conduct of limited face to face
classes in the school.
9. Data Analyses
Quantitative analyses of data will focus on the profile of the respondents and
the challenges encountered in the conduct of limited face to face classes. The profile of
the respondents will be analyzed using frequency and simple percentage. For the data
on the challenges encountered in the implementation of limited face to face classes,
weighted mean will be used for analysis. To determine if there is significant relationship
between the profile of the respondents and the challenges encountered in the conduct of
limited face to face classes, a statistical tool will be used.
The qualitative part of the data is on the suggested measures to improve the
conduct of limited face to face classes in Carrascal National High School. Thematic
analysis will be applied in examining the responses of the respondents.
