- Activity : Have you listed any needs that conflict with one another? For example, if you listed clean air to breathe, but also listed a car for transportation, your needs might conflict. Which would you choose, and how would you make your decision? If within ourselves, we have conflicting needs, how much is that multiplied when we look at a whole community, city, country, world? For example, what happens when a company’s(WALMART) need for cheap labor conflicts with workers’ needs for livable wages? Or when individual families’ needs for firewood conflict with the need to prevent erosion and conserve topsoil? Poor or rich people? Citizens or immigrants? People living in cities or in the countryside? People in one country or another?You or your neighbor? The environment or the corporation? This generation or the next generation?
- The social investment is often referred to as corporate social investment or CSI. Mervyn King published a report in 2002 that had significant implications for how companies run their business in South Africa. This report is now known as ‘King II’ (King 2002). The King II report declared that a company or organization is not healthy, or sustainable, unless it adds value to all three areas: financial, social and environmental. Also known as the ‘Triple Bottom Line’. People's concerned about sustainable development suggest that -meeting the needs of the future depends on how well we balance social, economic, and environmental objectives--or needs--when making decisions today.

- Financial Crisis - As discussed by Jose in last class how Govt., NGOs and consumers should come together and take ethical actions at their individual levels. Environmental Crisis- With Climate change, Global Warming, Loss of Bio-diversity, Natural Resource Depletion, Deforestation, Ocean Acidification, Ozone Layer Depletion, Public Health Issues, and many more.
- As stated in our book different companies faces sustainability crisis and several changes they made and took this crisis as an oppetunity to change thier image and also involved themselves in creating a sustainable society. Even before governmental regulations some corporations took initiative and incorporate sustainability in their Vision and worked hard to attain sustainability and set an example for other corporations. Pepsi: Measure Carbon Footprints Cadbury Chocolate: Responsible for 60% of greenhouse gas emission Nike: business model completely dependent on sustainability after crisis Walmart: saves money & long term strategy General Motors: landfill free, no residue after production Samsung: invest 2billion by 2020 in green technology Unilever: CEO states environment has to be incorporated in a company’s success.
- 1.Change the way we still thinking. Can't continue to live in a profit driven consumer exist society. we don't have not enough resources for that. we should look for profits/ GDP- by looking impact of society and environment. 2. Internalize the Externalists - All our institutions (Govt. organizations or corporates, etc.) focuses on growth and are taking from natural environment and throwing the waste out into the natural environment as it will dispose itself, by considering the external costs of production. but the reality is If you take something it will deplete and if you throw something away it stays within the system. 3.World is totally connected- power lies with National State Govts., Corporations , NGOs and they are Accountable for their products, social values., services. Eg. Global compact -voluntarily follow rules and regulations and basic principles. 4. We have to look for whole economy -produce changes not only in companies but within the Govts., individual behaviors. Unfortunately, policy making process is not very inclusive, It's an elite making decisions. But we need to understand that We can only find best solutions with stakeholders engagement around the globe. Policy makers ensure while making decisions and implementing policies by keeping in thier mind that whose going to be effected by these policies and how they can take those interests into account.

- Business is only answering the need of the people and govts. are responding to the request of the people so it's the PEOPLE who have to make their VISION clear to themselves and ask for change.
