The growing concern for energy saving has increased the usage of LED-based street lights, electronic chokes, compact fluorescent lamps, and inverter-fed drives. Hence, the load profile seen by the electrical grid is undergoing a notable change as these devices have to operate from a dc source. Photovoltaics (PV) being a major energy source, the aforementioned loads can be connected directly to the dc bus. A grid-connected PV system involves a power source (PV array), a power sink (load), and two power sources/sink (utility and battery), and hence, a power flow management system is required to balance the power flow among these sources. One such system is developed for selecting the operating mode of the bidirectional converter by sensing the battery voltage. The viability of the scheme has been ascertained by performing experimental studies on a laboratory prototype. The control strategy is digitally implemented on an Altera Cyclone II Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) board, and the algorithm is verified for different modes of operation by varying the load. Experimental results are presented to bring out the usefulness of the control strategy.

Control strategy for power flow management in a pv system supplying dc loads

Battery storage is usually employed in Photovoltaic (PV) system to mitigate the power fluctuations due to the characteristics of PV panels and solar irradiance. Control schemes for PV-battery systems must be able to stabilize the bus voltages as well as to control the power flows flexibly. This paper proposes a comprehensive control and power management system (CAPMS) for PV-battery-based hybrid microgrids with both AC and DC buses, for both grid-connected and islanded modes. The proposed CAPMS is successful in regulating the DC and AC bus voltages and frequency stably, controlling the voltage and power of each unit flexibly, and balancing the power flows in the systems automatically under different operating circumstances, regardless of disturbances from switching operating modes, fluctuations of irradiance and temperature, and change of loads. Both simulation and experimental case studies are carried out to verify the performance of the proposed method.

This paper proposes a high-efficiency two stage three-level grid-connected photovoltaic inverter. This work deals with the frequency regulation, voltage regulation, power management and load levelling of solar photovoltaic (PV)-battery-hydro based microgrid (MG). In this MG, the battery capacity is reduced as compared to a system, where the battery is directly connected to the DC bus of the voltage source converter (VSC). A bidirectional DC–DC converter connects the battery to the DC bus and it controls the charging and discharging current of the battery. It also regulates the DC bus voltage of VSC, frequency and voltage of MG. The proposed system manages the power flow of different sources like hydro and solar PV array. However, the load levelling is managed through the battery. The battery with VSC absorbs the sudden load changes, resulting in rapid regulation of DC link voltage, frequency and voltage of MG. Therefore, the system voltage and frequency regulation allows the active power balance along with the auxiliary services such as reactive power support, source current harmonics mitigation and voltage harmonics reduction at the point of common interconnection. The experimental results under various steady state and dynamic conditions, exhibit the excellent performance of the proposed system and validate the design and control of proposed MG.

Power Management in PV-Battery-Hydro Based Standalone Microgrid

Electrical and electronic devices when exposed to one or more power quality problems are prone to failure. This paper aims to enhance the quality of power in three-phase four-wire distribution grid using Fuel Cell Integrated Unified Power Quality Conditioner (FCI-UPQC). The proposed FCI-UPQC has four-leg converter on the shunt side and three-leg converter on the series side. A combination of a synchronous reference frame (SRF) and Instantaneous Reactive Power (IRP) theories are utilized to generate reference signals of the FCI-UPQC. Also, this paper proposes Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System controller to maintain DC link voltage in the FCI-UPQC. The Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System controller is designed like a sugeno fuzzy architecture and trained offline using data from the Proportional Integral (PI) controller. The obtained results proved that the proposed FCI-UPQC compensated power quality problems such as voltage sag, swell, harmonics, neutral current, source current imbalance in three-phase four-wire distribution grid. The presence of fuel cell in this work makes more effectiveness of the proposed system by providing real power support during supply interruption on the grid side.

This paper depicts a new configuration for modular hybrid power conversion systems, namely, multi-hybrid generation system (MHGS), and parallel connection at the output, such that the converter of each unit shares the load current equally. This is a significant step towards realizing a modular power conversion system architecture, where smaller units can be connected in any series/parallel grouping to realize any required unit specifications. The supercapacitor (SC) as a complementary source is used to compensate for the slow transient response of the fuel cell (FC) as a main power source. It assists the Fe to meet the grid power demand in order to achieve a better performance and dynamic behavior. Reliable control of the proposed MHGS with multiple units is also a challenging issue. In this paper, a simple control method to achieve active sharing of load current among MHGS modules is proposed. The simulation results verify the performance of the proposed structure and control scheme.

When integrated to the power system, large wind farms can pose voltage control issues among other problems. A thorough study is needed to identify the potential problems and to develop measures to mitigate them. Although integration of high levels of wind power into an existing transmission system does not require a major redesign, it necessitates additional control and compensating equipment to enable (fast) recovery from severe system disturbances. The use of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) near a wind farm is investigated for the purpose of stabilizing the grid voltage after grid-side disturbance such as a three phase short circuit fault. The strategy focuses on a fundamental grid operational requirement to maintain proper voltages at the point of common coupling by regulating the voltage. The DC voltage at individual wind turbine (WT) inverters is also stabilized to facilitate continuous operation of wind turbines during disturbances.

Improving the Dynamic Performance of Wind Farms with STATCOM

Current control based on hysteresis algorithms are widely used in different applications, such as motion control, active filtering or active/reactive power delivery control in distributed generation systems. The hysteresis current control provides to the system a fast and robust dynamic response, and requires a simple implementation in standard digital signal platforms. On the other hand, the main drawback of classical hysteresis current control lies in the fact that the switching frequency is variable, as the hysteresis band is fixed. In this paper a variable band hysteresis control algorithm will be presented. As it will be shown, this variable band permits overcoming the aforementioned problem giving rise to an almost constant switching frequency. The performance of this algorithm, together with classical hysteresis controls and proportional resonant (PR) controllers, has been evaluated in three different single-phase PV inverter topologies, by means of simulations performed with PSIM. In addition, the behavior of the thermal losses when using each control structure in such converters has been studied as well.

This letter develops a wireless charging system based on a novel orthogonal magnetic structure and primary-side power control to simplify the structure and reduce the weight of on-board pick-up for recharging the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The novel magnetic structure has a polarized transmitter with a flat U-type core and a perpendicular air-cored receiving coil, guaranteeing the magnetic flux operation space away from UAV body by coil structure itself and also reducing the weight of magnetic receiver. The power flow to the battery is controlled by the primary-side based on charging current and voltage feedback by pick-up. Simulations based on ANSYS Maxwell and experiments are carried out to validate the proposal. The weight of magnetic receiver is 130g. And the system can deliver 500W with a DC-to-Battery efficiency of 90.8%, meanwhile 10A constant current/50V constant voltage charging for 12S lithium-ion battery is achieved by the closed-loop system.

This paper presents a new unified power-quality conditioning system (MC-UPQC), capable of simultaneous compensation for voltage and current in multibus/multifeeder systems. In this configuration, one shunt voltage-source converter (shunt VSC) and two or more series VSCs exist. The system can be applied to adjacent feeders to compensate for supply-voltage and load current imperfections on the main feeder and full compensation of supply voltage imperfections on the other feeders. In the proposed configuration, all converters are connected back to back on the dc side and share a common dc-link capacitor. Therefore, power can be transferred from one feeder to adjacent feeders to compensate for sag/swell and interruption. The performance of the MC-UPQC as well as the adopted control algorithm is illustrated by simulation. The present work study the compensation principle and different control strategies used here are based on PI & ANN Controller of the MC-UPQC in detail. The results obtained in MATLAB/PSCAD on a two-bus/two-feeder system show the effectiveness of the proposed configuration.

The characteristics of distributed photovoltaic system power generation system is intermittent and instability. Under the weak grid conditions, when the active power of the PV system injected into the grid is fluctuant, the voltage of supply feeder will increase or decrease, thus affecting the normal use of sensitive load. The electric spring can transfer the energy injected into the supply feeder to the wide-voltage load, which is in series with the ES, to ensure the voltage stability of the sensitive load in the system. In this paper, a grid-connected photovoltaic simulation model with electric spring is built in Matlab / simulink. The voltage waveforms on the ES and sensitive load is obtained under the condition of changing the active power injected into the supply feeder by the grid-connected photovoltaic system. Thought the analysis of the waveforms, we can find that the Electric spring is a kind of effective method to solve the voltage fluctuation of the supply feeder in the grid-connected PV system.
