Vadului parish, part
of the larger Prahova
county, in Muntenia
region, Romania.

3. Short history
Nestled among hills covered in vine, Tohani is a picturesque village where
everything revolves around the love of wine-making. The vineyards located in this
part of Romania, part of the Dealu Mare wine region, are world famous for their
red wines.
4. The famous love story from Tohani
The village of Tohani
is also famous for a
royal love story. This is
where Prince Nicolae,
son of Ferdinand I and
Queen Marie of
Romania, married the
love of his life,
commoner Ioana
Doletti, losing thus his
royal status.

Prince Nicolae, the brother of King Carol
II, fell hopelessly in love with Ioana
Doletti, a very beautiful woman who
however did not have noble origins.
Against all restrictions, Prince Nicolae
and Ioana married in secret on October
28th 1931, at the Tohani church and
town hall.
The prince lost his royal rights, yet Ioana
Doletti and the vineyard of Tohani
remained his passions until the end.
Since then, all who chose to stop at
Tohani – for a while or for life – have
known and felt the passion that this
place bestows on people.

the Dealu Mare, in Muntenia
Wine Region, is one of the
most important regions in the
country. .

Romania's Muntenia wine
region, or as it
sometimes described the
Muntenia hills (Greater
Wallachia), is home to Dealu
Mare (Big Hill) Vineyards, one of
the best known vineyard areas.
It stretches for 90 km. from
Valea Calugareasca (near
Ploiesti) to Merei/Vernestin
(near Buzau), covering the
counties of Buzau and Prahova.
8. Tohani Museum
The permanent exhibition "Tohani - stopping on the wine road" represents the first stage in the implementation of
the Prahova County Council initiative to revive and capitalize on economic, cultural and tourist traditions whose old
age is lost in the darkness of time; the project envisages the shaping of three major arteries: "The Road of the
Voivodes", "The Wine Road" and "The Road of the Fruit"; on the wine road will be arranged, according to the
stages of realization of the project, cultural and tourist points in Urlati and other viticultural centers of the county.
