SAND CONTROL
Course Description
The business of fuelling the world through hydrocarbon production must be carried out with optimum profitability. Participants will learn
how sand production and inadvertent formation damage can erode these profits. Methods and procedures will be presented to guide
the participants in decision making with regard to completing a well with optimum control of formation sand while incurring minimal
damage to the well or production zone. Extensive theory will be presented illustrating why certain practices should either be employed
or strictly avoided. The very latest in the use of forecasting methods, tools, techniques, and personal experiences will be presented.
By attending the 4 day training course, you will be able to:
 Assess how rock will fail and how this analysis is used to determine the appropriate sand control method.
 Interpret particle size distribution data.
 Determine the appropriate sand control method when provided with appropriate reservoir and production data.
 Select completion equipment and associated tooling for sand control (screens, gravels, work strings, barrier valves etc.)
 Produce an outline installation procedure for the main types of sand control.
 Troubleshoot sand control problems.
Who Should Attend
This course is aimed primarily at completions and drilling engineers. It is also targeted at those that are influenced by sand control (e.g.
reservoir, production and petroleum engineers) and those with responsibilities for implementing sand control (i.e. service companies).
4 Day course contents in summary
This course covers the main types of sand control and focusses on the design and selection elements for each of these types.
 Rock mechanics and how rocks fail under stress and depletion.
 Particle size distribution analysis and how this data can be used in conjunction with rock failure and heterogeneity data to select the
appropriate sand control method.
 Case study – using reservoir data to select a completion strategy.
 Managing sand production – limiting, detecting and handling.
 Standalone screen completions – the reliability challenges and how reliability with standalone screens can be improved.
 The role of ICDs in reliability and reservoir behaviour.
 The basics of gravel packing, including sizing of gravels and screens.
 Circulating packs vs. alternate path open hole gravel packs.
 Case study – designing an appropriate gravel pack.
 Cased hole gravel packing and frac-packing (outline)
 Expandable screens – expansion methods, screen types and the compliance argument. Designing expandable screens for water / gas
shut-off.
 Summary of sand control.
4 Day Course Outline
DAY 1
 Introductions and learning expectations
 Productivity and the effect of sand production
 Rock mechanics and sand failure mechanisms
 How to assess rock failure
 Sand control without screens

 Standalone screens and the role of the open annulus
 The emerging role of ICDs (Inflow Control Devices) and how
they can be used to passively control fluid flow and increase
screen reliability.
 How to size a standalone screen
 Installation basics and mud clean up
DAY 3
 Gravel packing basics
 Sizing a gravel pack and associated screen – rules of thumb vs.
experiment
 Open hole gravels packs (OHGPs) - Circulating vs. squeeze pack
– basic methodologies and selection criteria.
 Installing the screen and gravel in an OHGP
 Cased hole gravel packs (CHGP) – skin calculations and
concerns.
 How to perforate for a CHGP – minimise skin but not get guns
stuck!
 Frac packs – why are they more reliable?

Sand Control

  • 1. SAND CONTROL Your Expert Course Leader Jonathan Bellarby Jonathan Bellarby has 20 years of oil and gas industry experience. A first class degree in geophysics and a master degree in Petroleum Engineering was a prelude to 6 years with BP as a petroleum engineer. Jonathan left BP and following a short spell in Camco, jointly founded ICE Energy. After 6 years of completions and petroleum engineering consultancy and training, ICE Energy merged with AGR - TRACS International. What past learners have said about our previous Sand Control training courses: “Thanks! I got excellent knowledge on sand control” Team Leader, Hess Indonesia “It was an informative course” Deputy General Manager, Reliance Industries “This is a very good course” Senior Completion Engineer, Lam Son Joint Operating Company “The content was good” Team Leader, Scomi Oiltools “A good course” Well Service Superintendent, Reliance Industries “It was a pleasure to attend this course” Drilling/Completions Engineer, Reliance Industries “Excellent new course! Learn a lot about sand control and how it will contribute to my work” Production Technologist, Shell “The course was very comprehensive and useful” Head Technical Services, Scomi Oiltools “Good duration and good supporting materials. Plenty of discussion and exercises too” Production Engineer, Petrofac “Good basic fundamental on sand control” Application Engineer, Weatherford “Very useful training” Production Superintendent, Total E & P Indonesia www.petroEDGEasia.net

For more information, visit us at www.petroedgeasia.net SAND CONTROL Course Description The business of fuelling the world through hydrocarbon production must be carried out with optimum profitability. Participants will learn how sand production and inadvertent formation damage can erode these profits. Methods and procedures will be presented to guide the participants in decision making with regard to completing a well with optimum control of formation sand while incurring minimal damage to the well or production zone. Extensive theory will be presented illustrating why certain practices should either be employed or strictly avoided. The very latest in the use of forecasting methods, tools, techniques, and personal experiences will be presented. By attending the 4 day training course, you will be able to:  Assess how rock will fail and how this analysis is used to determine the appropriate sand control method.  Interpret particle size distribution data.  Determine the appropriate sand control method when provided with appropriate reservoir and production data.  Select completion equipment and associated tooling for sand control (screens, gravels, work strings, barrier valves etc.)  Produce an outline installation procedure for the main types of sand control.  Troubleshoot sand control problems. Who Should Attend This course is aimed primarily at completions and drilling engineers. It is also targeted at those that are influenced by sand control (e.g. reservoir, production and petroleum engineers) and those with responsibilities for implementing sand control (i.e. service companies). 4 Day course contents in summary This course covers the main types of sand control and focusses on the design and selection elements for each of these types.  Rock mechanics and how rocks fail under stress and depletion.  Particle size distribution analysis and how this data can be used in conjunction with rock failure and heterogeneity data to select the appropriate sand control method.  Cased hole gravel packing and frac-packing (outline)  Expandable screens – expansion methods, screen types and the compliance argument. Designing expandable screens for water / gas shut-off.  Summary of sand control. 4 Day Course Outline DAY 1  Introductions and learning expectations  Productivity and the effect of sand production  Rock mechanics and sand failure mechanisms  How to assess rock failure  Sand control without screens DAY 2  Types of screens  Standalone screens and the role of the open annulus  The emerging role of ICDs (Inflow Control Devices) and how they can be used to passively control fluid flow and increase screen reliability.  How to size a standalone screen  Installation basics and mud clean up DAY 3  Gravel packing basics  Sizing a gravel pack and associated screen – rules of thumb vs. experiment  Open hole gravels packs (OHGPs) - Circulating vs. squeeze pack – basic methodologies and selection criteria.  Installing the screen and gravel in an OHGP  Cased hole gravel packs (CHGP) – skin calculations and concerns.  How to perforate for a CHGP – minimise skin but not get guns stuck!  Frac packs – why are they more reliable?  Application of frac packs Tool specifics for the higher rates of frac packs. DAY 4  Expandable screens – types, application and history – the reliability challenge and state of the market.  Sizing an expandable screen  Integration of sand control with zonal isolation  Remedial sand control (repair / consolidation)  Final exercise – choose and design the appropriate sand control method for reservoir and well data supplied  Closing remarks
