Independent Schooling
in the UK
An independent school in the UK is
defined as a school which does not
fall under the control of central or
local government. Approximately
8% of all pupils in the UK are educat-
ed within an independent school.
Funding
Most independent schools are fund-
ed through fees paid by the parents
of pupils to secure their place. Many
are run under a Board of Governors
as charitable trusts, while a small
number are privately owned.
Entry Selection
Independent schools will usually
have an entry selection process by
which they attempt to attract only
those students that are academical-
ly gifted or have special talents to
nurture. Some are highly academi-
cally selective while others special-
ise in helping children who need
more individual attention. Almost
all independent schools place em-
phasis on a broad education which
encompasses areas such as the
arts, music, drama and sports, as
well as academic subjects.
Age Groups
Independent schooling can begin
from nursery age right through to
pre-preparatory, preparatory, sen-
ior, and sixth form education.
