SEND Education Overview UK
EDUCATION
Sir Peter
Birkett
The UK government requires schools to make provisions for all
children classed as having special educational needs and disabilities
(SEND) that may affect their education, to support them and ensure
fair access to learning.
Defining SEND
SEND can be defined as any con-
dition which affects the ability of a
young person to learn. This can in-
clude problems with reading and
writing due to conditions such as
dyslexia, ADHD or other issues af-
fecting concentration, behavioural
issues affecting the ability of the
child to socialise well with others,
physical abilities, and the ability to
understand things.
SEND Support
Each child has the right to receive
a tailored care plan to support
them throughout their schooling
and education. This might include
additional support services with-
in the classroom or therapies of-
fered in the school environment.
Applying for Support
Schools and nurseries in the UK
have designated SEN co-ordinators,
who are the first port of call for any
parent who believes their child may
require additional support. Parents
of children not in school or nursery
can contact their local authority.

any parent who believes
their child may require ad-
ditional support.
