Hamlet Act 1 Scene 5 Analysis
Act 1 scene 5 in the first act is about when Hamlet meets the the ghost, and tries to talk to the ghost. The ghost explains to Hamlet that he is his
father. He tells Hamlet he is angry and cannot rest, until revenge is taken upon his murderer. Hamlet's father was murdered by Claudius, Hamlet's
uncle. His father revealed that Claudius poured poison into the King's ear while he was napping in his private place. This causes his blood to curds
and he dies, but not without seeing the murdered face. The King tells Hamlet he needs to revenge his death and that his mother will pay for her sin later
too. Hamlet makes Horatio and Marcellus swear upon his sword and explains to them that Claudius murdered his father . This scene is significant to

Hamlet
One of the most unique elements of the Hamlet character is that he is so human. Many types of readers can identify with him. Hamlet is imperfect,
and he is fretful. Hamlet has human properties, and it is his humanity that I intend to explore. Indeed it is these human qualities and imperfections that
make his story so tragic. Another tragic part of the play is the plays irony. Irony is an important tool in the hands of the playwright to achieve both
comical and/or dramatic effect. There is usually little reason for a tragedy to be funny, so
Shakespeare has used this tool to add more tragedy to the play. I will investigate the nature of this irony. Also, I will investigate the types of conflict
that play a major part in the play...show more content...
One occurrence of irony I found particularly striking was the fact that Hamlet effectively maneuvers himself into the same position as Claudius.
Claudius had attacked and killed a man who did not have the opportunity to defend himself, but when Hamlet kills Polonius, is he not guilty of the
same? It is intriguing that both Claudius and Hamlet have killed fathers. It is interesting to see how these two completely different characters deal
with this problem in different ways. Other interesting parallels I found are the numerous deaths by poison. Hamlet's father was murdered by
Claudius with poison. In the final act, the queen is the first to be poisoned, by drinking from Hamlet's cup. Then, Hamlet is wounded by the
poisoned tip of Laertes' sword. When they change swords, Hamlet gets the upper hand and Laertes is poisoned. When the queen dies, Laertes
explains all to Hamlet, before he dies. Hamlet then kills Claudius before dying himself. It is ironic that, as Claudius is poisoned because of his own
plotting, he had already signed his own death warrant when he killed Hamlet's father, the first tragic action of the play. There are only three people in
this play who don't die by poisoning: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern meet their deaths in England, after being outsmarted by Hamlet. The third is
Ophelia, who is drowned.
There are three types of conflict I can identify in the play: 'man versus man', 'man versus nature' and 'man versus

Essay On Happy Ending In Hamlet
The idea of a happy ending, to the common person, is the cliche ending of a story in which the protagonist gets the damsel, saves the world, and
survives near death. However, this is a very simple way to look at the concept of a "happy ending" and neglects the grand scheme of things, just as
there are more complicated equations in mathematics as one progresses in school, there are more complicated elements in a story as we look to dig
deeper into literature. A story that has a complex happy ending is Shakespeare'sHamlet, the story of a man seeking revenge on his family that has
caused him much despair. If we look at this play in a simple manner, we will probably not look at the ending as happy ending as our beloved characters
die,...show more content...
The other member of the family that we see in play, Gertrude, does not have a good case either, she is so unconcerned with her husband's murder and
knowingfully marries his murderer that we can infer that she collaborated with Claudius and was committing adultery before then. Gertrude's
actions are almost as grotesque as Claudius' and such a backstabbing person should never be given the power to rule over a kingdom where
hundreds of thousands of lives are at stake. The family of Hamlet is so hellbent on revenge, greed and power instead of the people of the kingdom
and is why I believe they are so unfit for rule. I believe that the lands of Denmark are in much better hands under the rule of Fortinbras, based off of
his desire to lead, ability to act and honor. His character is the foil to Hamlet and he shows that he is a better candidate to lead the kingdom most
notably when we see how Hamlet and Fortinbras reacted to their fathers' deaths. Hamlet acts like a mad man when his father is dead due to his constant
planning for revenge but without action. On the other hand, Fortinbras turns his anger from his father's death into motivation to become the King of
Denmark, he is also described to be a man of action and he displays calmness, virtuousness and honor which

Reality, Illusion, Appearance, and Deception in Shakespeare's Hamlet
As appearances play an important role in today's society, so they also play an important role in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. From the first
scene to the last, Shakespeare elaborates on the theme of appearance versus reality through plot and character.
The play's plot is full of incidents and events that are not what they appear to be. One such incident is Ophelia's ambiguous death. When, from the
Queen, the audience first learns of her passing, the girl's death seems very peaceful, poetic and accidental. But later, during the Graveyard Scene, when
the clowns are discussing her death, they classify it as a suicide. Does Ophelia, as...show more content...
He does this to know whether or not Claudius is guilty of his own brother's murder. Hamlet is by far the most observed character throughout the play.
Claudius first calls upon two of Hamlet's old friends, Rozencrantz and Guildenstern. He asks them to try to find the source of Hamlet's "madness".
Polonius and the King himself later spy on Hamlet. This time, they use Ophelia to try to expose the reason of Hamlet's "madness". Another spy scene
occurs in the Closet Scene when Polonius eavesdrops on Hamlet and the Queen. This proves fatal for the old lord chamberlain. Through Ophelia's
death, the Triple–Pronged plan, and the various spy plots, the audience becomes aware of the beguiling nature of Hamlet's plot.
Shakespeare also used the characters in Hamlet to explore the theme of appearance versus reality. For example, Rozencrantz and Guildenstern appear
to be Hamlet's friends but they are, in reality, spying on him for Claudius. As well, Hamlet is uncertain whether or not the ghost is what it appears to
be (his father) or perhaps something else such as the devil in disguise. In addition, the players in whom Hamlet takes such delight base their
profession on appearing real; the First Player sheds tears as he recites the speech about the late King Priam and his grieving wife, Heccuba.
Polonius, as well as his son and daughter, also help to advance the theme. The father

Hamlet Act 4 Scene 4 Analysis
Targeting the Audience
In Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, Prince Hamlet's speech or soliloquy from Act 4, Scene 4 effectively targets both the plays audience and other
characters in the play. In Hamlets speech, he is reflecting on how he is meaninglessly prolonging Claudius's death, even though he could have killed
him at anytime and how he has everything he needs to accomplish his goal. He is also reflecting on how God has blessed humans with the power of
thought to use when needed and that blessing is what makes humans different from animals. Hamlet's speech opens the eyes of the audience by showing
them how humans are capable of doing anything they put their minds too and the consequences of overthinking and not taking action to...show more

Just like how Hamlet's overthinking caused him to miss the opportunity to kill Claudius because he thought he could wait for a much better
opportunity to get his revenge. Hamlet's speech also shows how the human mind is a powerful thing and that it should be used to its fullest to
achieve any objective. It is the how Hamlet achieved his goal at the end of the play, killing Claudius. Hamlet says, "Sure, he that made us with such
large discourse, looking before and after, gave us not that capability and godlike reason to fust in us unused. Now, whether it be bestial oblivion, or
some craven scruple." (IV, IV,35
–39) Hamlet shows the audience in this quote that the human mind is an amazing creation and is what makes us
different from beasts. He also says that God has blessed humans with it for a reason so one should use it to its fullest capabilities.
Hamlet's soliloquy greatly affected other characters in the play and lead to the deaths of many. After reflecting on what the captain said, Hamlet decides
that he must take action and not prolong Claudius's death anymore and get his revenge. This is shown when Hamlet says, "Oh, from this time forth, my
thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!" (IV, IV,65
–66) One of Hamlets very first actions after this, was when he reads the letter Claudius had sent
with them to England. Hamlet says, "O royal knavery! –an exact command, larded with many several sorts of

"Ghost Soldiers" by Hampton Sides is a marvelous novel. It was composed shrewdly well while giving realities and dates that accompany the story.
His focuses are depicted from what he saw as it was a true to life book. The points of interest experience the sixth Ranger Battalion going past
adversary lines in endeavor to save Americans and British POW's, the camp of numerous U.S. troopers in Japan, the Bataan demise walk, and how they

Essay on Character Analysis of Hamlet
Hamlet is the main character and protagonist in the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare. Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark. He is the son of Queen
Gertrude and King Hamlet, who was murdered by his uncle Claudius. Hamlet is a very unique individual and handles many situations in unusual ways.
Hamlet is an extremely intriguing and complex character that appears to change with every different perspective. Shakespeare has done an absolutely
fantastic job with capturing true human characteristics with Hamlet. Hamlet bounces back and forth with his emotions so inconsistently that one never
knows what he is about to do next. One moment he is rational, and the next he is not. One moment he wants to plan things out, and then he does things

The ghost made the whole situation for Hamlet seem even that much more unreal. He already wished that all of the recent events he had to deal with
were not real. He then has to deal with the reality of this ghost. It seems to influence him terribly and takes a negative toll on his emotions. This
occurrence continues to further diversify Hamlet's feelings and emotions (Snider, 67). The last major external influence is the company of others
(Snider, 71). How hamlet responded had a lot to do with the actions done by others and himself. A person's environment greatly affects how they handle
oneself and situations around them. Due to Hamlet's extremely ludicrous environment and unusual circumstances, he is just that much more of a
complicated and elaborate character (Bristol). Another major thing that contributed to Hamlet's complexity was his utter hatred towards Claudius.
From the get go Hamlet never liked him. He felt Claudius was immoral and almost worthless. After the ghost of his father told Hamlet that Claudius
was responsible for his death, he hated his uncle just that much more. That hatred soon turned into something much more though. It transformed into a
desire for revenge. Before he did anything though, he had to be positive that Claudius was the one responsible, so Hamlet tested his innocence.
Claudius failed the test and Hamlet was then positive that he was responsible for the murder of his father (Mitchell, 34–37). Hamlet

Hamlet Final Essay The tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare brilliantly recounts the tale of feigned and true madness as it delves into themes of
betrayal, incest, revenge, moral corruption, and death. The play, set in the kingdom of Denmark, gives an account of how PrinceHamlet seeks exact
revenge on his uncle Claudius, for murdering his own brother and Prince Hamlet's father. After assassinating King Hamlet, Claudius succeeds the
throne and becomes joined in holy matrimony to King Hamlet's widow and Prince Hamlet's mother, Queen...show more content...
Hamlet's image of Claudius reveals the extensive amount of disgust that he has for the man who has married his mother. Later on in the play, when
actors arrive at the castle, Hamlet requests that they do a speech that he once heard. This speech happens to be the tale that Aenes told Dido about the
murder of Priam. Hamlet starts the speech himself but then lets the actor take control who recites, "Unequal matched/ Pyrrhus at Priam drives.... The
'unnerved father falls"(2.2.458–461). Here, it is possible that Hamlet is comparing Pyrrhus to himself and Priam to Claudius. In the story of Pyrrhus
and Priam, Pyrrhus has come to the city of Troy in order to avenge the death of his father by killing the Trojan King Priam. At one point in the tale,
Pyrrhus hesitated with his sword in the air when he had the chance to kill Priam right then. This is similar to act three scene three where Hamlet
almost takes Claudius' life with his dagger while he is praying but halts mid–strike. Another possibility is that Hamlet is comparing Pyrrhus to Claudius
and Priam to King Hamlet. Even though Claudius didn't murder King Hamlet with a sword, they were unequally matched as King Hamlet was asleep
when Claudius poisoned him. Hamlet is drawing a parallel between the murder of Prium by Pyrrhus, and the murder of his father at the hands of
Claudius. The speech about Pyrrhus and Priam plays a very important role in the play. Up until

Hamlet A Hero Essay
Not All Heroes Wear Capes Many view Hamlet, the main character, in Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet as a hero. He portrays characteristics that prove
to the reader that he does possess heroic qualities. Although, it is a struggle for him throughout the play, but as he goes through life and learns new
ways of coping things, he develops new characteristics that he didn't have in the beginning. Hamlet learns to overcome his anxiety, depression, and
anger. In the end, he learns how to be calm and collected. The way Hamlet learns how to handle internal conflicts throughout the play, shows the
readers a realistic view of the difficult encounters one may have when learning to cope with different issues. Hamlet is arguably one of the greatest
dramatic characters to be created. As he learns of his father's death, he starts to over analyze ever little detail causing him to create scenarios in his mind
that give me anxiety. His mother notices his anger, but Hamlet makes it known that the distress he is feeling over–powers his actions. He says,
"Together with all the forms, moods, shapes of grief... for they are the actions that a man might play; but I have that within which passes show, these
but the trappings and the suits of woe" (ACT I, ii). He is angry at his mother because she remarried that same man that killed his father. Hamlet starts to
see his father's ghost and she cannot. She then starts to tell Hamlet how he has offended his father, as in Claudius. When Hamlet is defending

Hamlet: Critical Essay
What have you come to understand about the intense human relationships of Hamlet? How has this understanding been affected by the perspectives of
others? In you response you should focus on 3 scenes in the play and a range of perspectives.
The intense human relationships of Hamlet have been viewed through numerous perspectives yet all have reached the same conclusions. With the
exception of just one, the friendship of Hamlet and Horatio, all the relationships are dishonourable, dysfunctional and destined to fail. Being a revenge
tragedy it is immediately clear this play is filled with lies, deceit and treachery.
The exact time of Hamlet's composition is unknown, however it is assumed to be between 1599 and 1602. This was a dark,...show more content...
The scene ends with Hamlet possessively demanding her "but go not to my uncle's bed" and uses multiple sexual references when he tells her to not
let Claudius "Pinch wanton on your cheek, call you his mouse". Relating this to the Oedipus complex, Hamlet appears to be more like a jealous lover
than a concerned son. Examining act 3 scene 4 from different perspectives gives varied insights into Gertrude and Hamlet's relationship, yet each
perspective deduces that it is a dishonourable relationship with no mutual trust or respect.
Another dishonourable family relationship in Hamlet is that between Ophelia and her father Polonius. Polonius manipulates Ophelia for his own
benefit, treating her like a tool rather than a person. Their relationships becomes pitiful when she receives orders from her father and responds with "I
shall obey, my lord", implying that she is at the service of her father. Through the analysis of act 4 scene 5 a deeper understanding can be reached about
Ophelia's relationship with her late father. Following the death of Polonius, Ophelia's mind becomes unhinged as she drifts into insanity, speaking in
songs and rhymes. Considering this scene from a feminists perspective it can be thought that Ophelia went mad with guilt having her desire for Hamlet
to kill her father so that they can be together fulfilled. This theory strongly supports the idea that the relationship between Ophelia and Polonius

No Fear Hamlet Essay
Is it disappointment or is it hatred?
No Fear Shakespeare: Hamlet was written by William Shakespeare. Hamlet is the son of Queen Gertrude and Old King Hamlet. Hamlet returns to
Denmark after the death of his father. Shortly after his father's death, his mother (Queen Gertrude) remarries. Not only does the Queen remarry to soon
(in Hamlet's perspective) but out of all the men in the world she chose to marry King Claudius which also happens to be Hamlets uncle. Throughout
the play, Hamlet makes it very clear that he isn't okay with the marriage of his mother and uncle. While some critics may argue that Hamlet feels
hatred for his mother, I believe that he was just very disappointed in his mom and felt very upset because of the loss of his...show more content...
In Shakespeare's time, this marriage would be frowned upon which is why Hamlet feels disgust towards his mother being guilty of it. He also can't
believe how his mother claimed to love his father yet "betrayed" Old King Hamlet (or at least that's what Hamlet sees it as – betrayal) by marrying his
brother. The marriage is what made Hamlet and his mother start having a rocky relationship. Although Hamlet didn't participate in the wedding and
wasn't okay with it, he didn't hate his mother but was just very disappointed in her decision of marrying his uncle.
Pursuing this further, Hamlet also felt anger throughout the play. Many things throughout the play caused for Hamlet to change from his sad stage into
an anger stage. What made Hamlet transition into his anger stage was when he found out through his father's ghost that King Claudius had killed his
father by pouring poison into his ear. Hamlet was filled with anger and wanted to get revenge against his uncle. Hamlet also felt anger towards his
mother for marrying King Claudius (the murderer). At one–point Hamlet felt that his mother wasn't loyal and respectful towards his father. Hamlet
said, "...even an animal would have mourned its mate longer than she did...even before the tears on her cheeks had dried, she remarried..." (1.2.
150–154). Hamlet felt like his mother didn't mourn his father long enough and that she disrespected his honor be remarrying

Reflection, whether it be inward on one's self or outward, as in showing someone else who they are, has come to mean a lot in today's society and it is
often something people turn to in times of hardship. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the main character, Hamlet, is confronted with the task to
avenge his father's death while his mental health seems to deteriorate and his personal and familial relationships crumble. Yet,Hamlet continues to
exercise his ability to show other characters who they truly are and what Shakespeare has them represent and reflect inwards on himself and his internal
conflicts throughout the play. Both of these things often resemble or allude to a mirror. Consequently, this use of mirrors in Hamlet, though not
explicitly stated, is one of the reasons that the play continues to be considered one of the best literary works in Western literature. As Hamlet, who
essentially functions as a mirror to everyone in the show, including himself, moves through each scene, he reflects different things: what different
characters represent, their actions, and his own feelings.
Although Hamlet possesses this ability to reflect other characters back onto themselves, this is not a cookie–cutter ability; he does this reflecting in
different ways to different characters.
This is clearly shown in the difference between his reactions one–on–one with Gertrude, his mother, and Ophelia, his lover.
When interacting with Gertrude, Hamlet reflects her actions back to her by

Hamlet Essay : Hamlet's Hamartia
William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is a captivating story revolving around the death of the King of Denmark and the reveal of how his death truly
happened at the hands of his own brother – who wanted the kingdom to himself. After the king's death, he returns as a ghost to tell his son, Hamlet, of
how his death truly happened. The rest of the story entails how Hamlet took this news and begins his journey to avenge his father's murder. As this
journey progresses, the audience is able to witness Hamlet's hamartia. Hamartia is a tragic flaw which leads to the eventual downfall of a hero or
heroine. Hamlet's hamartia is his inability to act and his indecisiveness regarding avenging his father's murder – which results in a horrid ending for
Hamlet and most of the people he knows.
Throughout "Hamlet", it is evident that Hamlet's hamartia is his inability to act and his indecisiveness. These flaws are evident throughout many
aspects of his life, but are able to be identified as he attempts to avenge his father's murder. After Hamlet's father tells him in his ghostly form that he
was murdered by his brother, Claudius, instead of simply going to seek revenge immediately, Hamlet makes elaborate plans to decide if Claudius is
truly guilty of the murder. This is where his indecisiveness begins. Hamlet vows to his father he will avenge his death in Act I, Scene 5, "So uncle,
there you are. Now to my word:" (Line 111). While Hamlet vows this to his father, he does not act on it instantly.

Hamlet's Psychological Aspect
Hamlet's psychological aspect Introduction I decided to do this research work because I have enjoyed a lot reading this play: Hamlet. The inner
motivations and psyche of this character have captured my attention. Therefore, the aim of this research is to depict Hamlet's attitudes during the
play. I will try to approach to his real feelings on life and death taking into consideration what critics and researchers have said about Hamlet. In
order to clarify Hamlet's personality and behaviour, I will provide some aspects of the historical context in which Shakespeare was inspired to write
this play, and a brief summary of it to take into account the plot. Finally, I will make a conclusion in which I will try to summarise...show more content...
¬¬¬¬¬ Another important thing that researchers point out about Hamlet is that he has got an enigmatic personality. While speaking, he sounds
mysterious as if there were something important hidden in his speech, even something he is not aware of. In addition to this, another important aspect
to highlight about his psyche is his extremely philosophical and contemplative attitude, which has led him to face difficult questions. What is more,
questions that cannot be answered with any certainty. The clearest example is the well known soliloquy in act 3 scene 1: "To be, or not to be– that is
the question; whether 'tis nobler in mind to suffer¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of
troubles, and by opposing end them? To die, to sleep– no more, and by a sleep to say we end the heart–ache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh
is heir to. 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep..." Hamlet is debating, perhaps, whether to take action to revenge his father's
death, which would in all probability result in him losing his own life, or to leave things as they are. This leads him to question whether life is worth
living at all. < http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/hamlet/canalysis.html > However, despite being thoughtful to the point of obsession, other
researchers assert that Hamlet acts impulsively and behaves rashly.

Hamlet's Expounding Of Life
As common in Hamlet's soliloquies, he is expounding on the meaning of life and how it impacts him. Hamlet is conflicted with Ophelia and the
ordeal with his father and Polonius, and he once again considers ending his own life. Before meeting with Ophelia, he once again delves deep into his
own mind for an answer on what to do. Hamlet once again is demonstrating his desire to end his own life; the complications occurring in his life are
causing strifes for him to overcome. He is asking himself if he would rather "...be, or not...be", as in if he would rather continue living a painful life
or end it. He is question whether or not life is worth living anymore, as he is consistently living in a world full of pain and injustice against his family.

Shakespeare's Hamlet Plot Summary
Title of Work: Hamlet
Author: William Shakespeare
Plot Summary:
The play begins by two guards trying to convince a third one that they have just seen the ghost of what looks like the recently deceased King Hamlet.
Once the ghost appears, all three guards decide they must tell (young) Hamlet, King Hamlet's son. Before this happens, Claudius, the new king and
King Hamlet's brother, gives a speech to young Hamlet about why he should start to move on past the death of his father. At this point, Hamlet is not
the most fond of Claudius because Claudius married Hamlet's mother, his dead brother's wife. The three guards then approach Hamlet about what they
had seen. Hamlet is immediately interested and decides to go with the guards later that...show more content...
While Claudius seems to be praying, Hamlet contemplates killing him, but decides not to because that would mean Claudius would go to heaven right

for marrying his uncle so shortly after his father's death. Gertrude becomes frightened, so Polonious, who was in hiding throughout their conversation,
jumps up, and Hamlet stabbed him thinking it was Claudius. After the death of Polonious, Ophelia became mad and Laertes returned from Paris,
quickly hearing about the death of his father. After discussing with Claudius that the death of Polonious was Hamlet's doing, they set up a plan to kill
Hamlet, which is fencing until Hamlet is stabbed by Lartes. Before this plan happens, Ophelia drowns in a river. Then, when Hamlet and Laertes are
fencing, Gertrude dies by accidentally drinking poison meant for Hamlet, Laertes and Hamlet stab each other, and Hamlet stabs Claudius. The play
ends after everyone dies.
Significant characters & brief explanations:
Hamlet: Hamlet is the son of (dead) King Hamlet and Gertrude. His sentiments are expressed more frequently and in depth than other characters as
the play is focused mostly on him. He is extremely emotional, mostly due to the death of his father, and is overly indecisive. He acts more like a
teenager than a thirty–year–old man.

Summary Of Ophelia In Shakespeare's Hamlet
Hamlet's love for Ophelia is strangled by the spying, lying, and madness, which poisons the atmosphere of the Royal House of Denmark.
Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" tells the tale of murder, love, madness, and lies. The romance between Hamlet the vengeful prince and Ophelia the
innocent girl is a love story filled with deceit, sorrow, and insanity. Both individuals, torn between desire and duty, suffer due to the poisonous
atmosphere of their royal household. The tragic and toxic romance between Hamlet and Ophelia creates a bittersweet story that enriches Shakespeare's
wonderful and dramatic play. Ophelia and Hamlet's love is strangled by the toxic people who surround the two lovers. An example of such a person is
Polonius. Polonius does not approve of their romance and he is one of the major factors that creates such a poisonous atmosphere for Ophelia and
Hamlet.
Polonius speaks to Ophelia about her relationship with Hamlet and desires to know what her true association with Hamlet is. He wants to learn
whether the young man has made advances to her. And if so, he wants to know Hamlet's intention behind such advances. Polonius states, "Marry, well
bethought: 'Tis told me, he hath very oft of late given private time to you, and you yourself have of your audience been most free and bounteous: if it
be so – as so 'tis put on me, and that in way of caution – I must tell you, you do not understand yourself so clearly as it behoves my daughter and your

Hamlet Act 1 Scene 2

soliloquy Hamlet's unstable state of mind is evident as well as his feelings of despair about his father's death and his disgust of his mother's remarriage
to his uncle Claudius. Hamlet's hatred for his uncle is shown through harsh comparisons between Claudius and his late father. This soliloquy takes
place after Claudius has begun his reign as king and has addressed the court for the first time but before Hamlet hears about the apparition that Horatio
and the guards have seen. Hamlet's character and personality are shown in this soliloquy through the use of classical imagery, diction and...show more

In the soliloquy it is shown that while Hamlet does not like his uncle he blames his mother for all that has happened especially her weak
disposition that caused her to marry Claudius as seen in the line "frailty thy name is women". In the line Hamlet generalizes all women showing
his instability as he does not understand the difference between his mother's actions and all women. His anger towards his mother is also shown in
his comparison of her being "like Niobe all tears" because like the mythological figure Niobe she also mourned however Niobe was turned to stone
and kept weaping which suggests that he considers her to be hypocritical because while she cried and mourned she remarried only a month after her
husband died. This idea is also shown in the line "a beast would have mourned longer" showing that because of her betrayal he considers her to be an
unfeeling animal. Hamlet's anger builds throughout the soliloquy until he comes to the realization that he cannot reveal his true thoughts to anyone
"but break my heart for I must hold my tongue." Because of the anger Hamlet feels at his mother's remarriage he compares his uncle to his father the
late king Hamlet. His comparisons are quite harsh such as "Hyperion to a satyr" this classical allusion shows his prejudice against his uncle by
considering his father a god and his uncle to be half goat. The comparison as well as others seen in

Hamlet Act 1 Scene 5 Analysis

  • 1. Hamlet Act 1 Scene 5 Analysis Act 1 scene 5 in the first act is about when Hamlet meets the the ghost, and tries to talk to the ghost. The ghost explains to Hamlet that he is his father. He tells Hamlet he is angry and cannot rest, until revenge is taken upon his murderer. Hamlet's father was murdered by Claudius, Hamlet's uncle. His father revealed that Claudius poured poison into the King's ear while he was napping in his private place. This causes his blood to curds and he dies, but not without seeing the murdered face. The King tells Hamlet he needs to revenge his death and that his mother will pay for her sin later too. Hamlet makes Horatio and Marcellus swear upon his sword and explains to them that Claudius murdered his father . This scene is significant to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay about hamlet Hamlet One of the most unique elements of the Hamlet character is that he is so human. Many types of readers can identify with him. Hamlet is imperfect, and he is fretful. Hamlet has human properties, and it is his humanity that I intend to explore. Indeed it is these human qualities and imperfections that make his story so tragic. Another tragic part of the play is the plays irony. Irony is an important tool in the hands of the playwright to achieve both comical and/or dramatic effect. There is usually little reason for a tragedy to be funny, so Shakespeare has used this tool to add more tragedy to the play. I will investigate the nature of this irony. Also, I will investigate the types of conflict that play a major part in the play...show more content... One occurrence of irony I found particularly striking was the fact that Hamlet effectively maneuvers himself into the same position as Claudius. Claudius had attacked and killed a man who did not have the opportunity to defend himself, but when Hamlet kills Polonius, is he not guilty of the same? It is intriguing that both Claudius and Hamlet have killed fathers. It is interesting to see how these two completely different characters deal with this problem in different ways. Other interesting parallels I found are the numerous deaths by poison. Hamlet's father was murdered by Claudius with poison. In the final act, the queen is the first to be poisoned, by drinking from Hamlet's cup. Then, Hamlet is wounded by the poisoned tip of Laertes' sword. When they change swords, Hamlet gets the upper hand and Laertes is poisoned. When the queen dies, Laertes explains all to Hamlet, before he dies. Hamlet then kills Claudius before dying himself. It is ironic that, as Claudius is poisoned because of his own plotting, he had already signed his own death warrant when he killed Hamlet's father, the first tragic action of the play. There are only three people in this play who don't die by poisoning: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern meet their deaths in England, after being outsmarted by Hamlet. The third is Ophelia, who is drowned. There are three types of conflict I can identify in the play: 'man versus man', 'man versus nature' and 'man versus Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay On Happy Ending In Hamlet The idea of a happy ending, to the common person, is the cliche ending of a story in which the protagonist gets the damsel, saves the world, and survives near death. However, this is a very simple way to look at the concept of a "happy ending" and neglects the grand scheme of things, just as there are more complicated equations in mathematics as one progresses in school, there are more complicated elements in a story as we look to dig deeper into literature. A story that has a complex happy ending is Shakespeare'sHamlet, the story of a man seeking revenge on his family that has caused him much despair. If we look at this play in a simple manner, we will probably not look at the ending as happy ending as our beloved characters die,...show more content... The other member of the family that we see in play, Gertrude, does not have a good case either, she is so unconcerned with her husband's murder and knowingfully marries his murderer that we can infer that she collaborated with Claudius and was committing adultery before then. Gertrude's actions are almost as grotesque as Claudius' and such a backstabbing person should never be given the power to rule over a kingdom where hundreds of thousands of lives are at stake. The family of Hamlet is so hellbent on revenge, greed and power instead of the people of the kingdom and is why I believe they are so unfit for rule. I believe that the lands of Denmark are in much better hands under the rule of Fortinbras, based off of his desire to lead, ability to act and honor. His character is the foil to Hamlet and he shows that he is a better candidate to lead the kingdom most notably when we see how Hamlet and Fortinbras reacted to their fathers' deaths. Hamlet acts like a mad man when his father is dead due to his constant planning for revenge but without action. On the other hand, Fortinbras turns his anger from his father's death into motivation to become the King of Denmark, he is also described to be a man of action and he displays calmness, virtuousness and honor which Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Reality, Illusion, Appearance, and Deception in Shakespeare's Hamlet As appearances play an important role in today's society, so they also play an important role in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. From the first scene to the last, Shakespeare elaborates on the theme of appearance versus reality through plot and character. The play's plot is full of incidents and events that are not what they appear to be. One such incident is Ophelia's ambiguous death. When, from the Queen, the audience first learns of her passing, the girl's death seems very peaceful, poetic and accidental. But later, during the Graveyard Scene, when the clowns are discussing her death, they classify it as a suicide. Another spy scene occurs in the Closet Scene when Polonius eavesdrops on Hamlet and the Queen. This proves fatal for the old lord chamberlain. Through Ophelia's death, the Triple–Pronged plan, and the various spy plots, the audience becomes aware of the beguiling nature of Hamlet's plot. Shakespeare also used the characters in Hamlet to explore the theme of appearance versus reality. For example, Rozencrantz and Guildenstern appear to be Hamlet's friends but they are, in reality, spying on him for Claudius. As well, Hamlet is uncertain whether or not the ghost is what it appears to be (his father) or perhaps something else such as the devil in disguise. In addition, the players in whom Hamlet takes such delight base their profession on appearing real; the First Player sheds tears as he recites the speech about the late King Priam and his grieving wife, Heccuba. Polonius, as well as his son and daughter, also help to advance the theme. The father Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Hamlet Act 4 Scene 4 Analysis Targeting the Audience In Shakespeare's play, Hamlet, Prince Hamlet's speech or soliloquy from Act 4, Scene 4 effectively targets both the plays audience and other characters in the play. In Hamlets speech, he is reflecting on how he is meaninglessly prolonging Claudius's death, even though he could have killed him at anytime and how he has everything he needs to accomplish his goal. He is also reflecting on how God has blessed humans with the power of thought to use when needed and that blessing is what makes humans different from animals. Hamlet's speech opens the eyes of the audience by showing them how humans are capable of doing anything they put their minds too and the consequences of overthinking and not taking action to...show more content... Just like how Hamlet's overthinking caused him to miss the opportunity to kill Claudius because he thought he could wait for a much better opportunity to get his revenge. Hamlet's speech also shows how the human mind is a powerful thing and that it should be used to its fullest to achieve any objective. It is the how Hamlet achieved his goal at the end of the play, killing Claudius. Hamlet says, "Sure, he that made us with such large discourse, looking before and after, gave us not that capability and godlike reason to fust in us unused. Now, whether it be bestial oblivion, or some craven scruple." (IV, IV,35 –39) Hamlet shows the audience in this quote that the human mind is an amazing creation and is what makes us different from beasts. He also says that God has blessed humans with it for a reason so one should use it to its fullest capabilities. Hamlet's soliloquy greatly affected other characters in the play and lead to the deaths of many. After reflecting on what the captain said, Hamlet decides that he must take action and not prolong Claudius's death anymore and get his revenge. This is shown when Hamlet says, "Oh, from this time forth, my thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!" (IV, IV,65 –66) One of Hamlets very first actions after this, was when he reads the letter Claudius had sent with them to England. Hamlet says, "O royal knavery! –an exact command, larded with many several sorts of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Ghost Soldiers Summary "Ghost Soldiers" by Hampton Sides is a marvelous novel. It was composed shrewdly well while giving realities and dates that accompany the story. His focuses are depicted from what he saw as it was a true to life book. The points of interest experience the sixth Ranger Battalion going past adversary lines in endeavor to save Americans and British POW's, the camp of numerous U.S. troopers in Japan, the Bataan demise walk, and how they all wanted to get away. It goes to detail on how Japanese warriors carried on through the tormenting of Americans and Philippines, how the Embargo set by the U.S. constrained the Japanese to take extreme measures in infantry. • 7. Essay on Character Analysis of Hamlet Hamlet is the main character and protagonist in the play "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare. Hamlet is the Prince of Denmark. He is the son of Queen Gertrude and King Hamlet, who was murdered by his uncle Claudius. Hamlet is a very unique individual and handles many situations in unusual ways. Hamlet is an extremely intriguing and complex character that appears to change with every different perspective. Shakespeare has done an absolutely fantastic job with capturing true human characteristics with Hamlet. Hamlet bounces back and forth with his emotions so inconsistently that one never knows what he is about to do next. One moment he is rational, and the next he is not. One moment he wants to plan things out, and then he does things ...show more content... The ghost made the whole situation for Hamlet seem even that much more unreal. He already wished that all of the recent events he had to deal with were not real. He then has to deal with the reality of this ghost. It seems to influence him terribly and takes a negative toll on his emotions. This occurrence continues to further diversify Hamlet's feelings and emotions (Snider, 67). The last major external influence is the company of others (Snider, 71). How hamlet responded had a lot to do with the actions done by others and himself. A person's environment greatly affects how they handle oneself and situations around them. Due to Hamlet's extremely ludicrous environment and unusual circumstances, he is just that much more of a complicated and elaborate character (Bristol). Another major thing that contributed to Hamlet's complexity was his utter hatred towards Claudius. From the get go Hamlet never liked him. He felt Claudius was immoral and almost worthless. After the ghost of his father told Hamlet that Claudius was responsible for his death, he hated his uncle just that much more. That hatred soon turned into something much more though. It transformed into a desire for revenge. Before he did anything though, he had to be positive that Claudius was the one responsible, so Hamlet tested his innocence. Claudius failed the test and Hamlet was then positive that he was responsible for the murder of his father (Mitchell, 34–37). Hamlet Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay on hamlet final Emma Johns Mrs. Tiffany Perkins English II Honors 14 May 2014 Hamlet Final Essay The tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare brilliantly recounts the tale of feigned and true madness as it delves into themes of betrayal, incest, revenge, moral corruption, and death. The play, set in the kingdom of Denmark, gives an account of how PrinceHamlet seeks exact revenge on his uncle Claudius, for murdering his own brother and Prince Hamlet's father. After assassinating King Hamlet, Claudius succeeds the throne and becomes joined in holy matrimony to King Hamlet's widow and Prince Hamlet's mother, Queen...show more content... Hamlet's image of Claudius reveals the extensive amount of disgust that he has for the man who has married his mother. Later on in the play, when actors arrive at the castle, Hamlet requests that they do a speech that he once heard. This speech happens to be the tale that Aenes told Dido about the murder of Priam. Hamlet starts the speech himself but then lets the actor take control who recites, "Unequal matched/ Pyrrhus at Priam drives.... The 'unnerved father falls"(2.2.458–461). Here, it is possible that Hamlet is comparing Pyrrhus to himself and Priam to Claudius. In the story of Pyrrhus and Priam, Pyrrhus has come to the city of Troy in order to avenge the death of his father by killing the Trojan King Priam. At one point in the tale, Pyrrhus hesitated with his sword in the air when he had the chance to kill Priam right then. This is similar to act three scene three where Hamlet almost takes Claudius' life with his dagger while he is praying but halts mid–strike. Another possibility is that Hamlet is comparing Pyrrhus to Claudius and Priam to King Hamlet. Even though Claudius didn't murder King Hamlet with a sword, they were unequally matched as King Hamlet was asleep when Claudius poisoned him. Hamlet is drawing a parallel between the murder of Prium by Pyrrhus, and the murder of his father at the hands of Claudius. The speech about Pyrrhus and Priam plays a very important role in the play. • 9. Hamlet A Hero Essay Not All Heroes Wear Capes Many view Hamlet, the main character, in Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet as a hero. He portrays characteristics that prove to the reader that he does possess heroic qualities. Although, it is a struggle for him throughout the play, but as he goes through life and learns new ways of coping things, he develops new characteristics that he didn't have in the beginning. Hamlet learns to overcome his anxiety, depression, and anger. In the end, he learns how to be calm and collected. The way Hamlet learns how to handle internal conflicts throughout the play, shows the readers a realistic view of the difficult encounters one may have when learning to cope with different issues. Hamlet is arguably one of the greatest dramatic characters to be created. As he learns of his father's death, he starts to over analyze ever little detail causing him to create scenarios in his mind that give me anxiety. His mother notices his anger, but Hamlet makes it known that the distress he is feeling over–powers his actions. He says, "Together with all the forms, moods, shapes of grief... for they are the actions that a man might play; but I have that within which passes show, these but the trappings and the suits of woe" (ACT I, ii). • 10. Hamlet: Critical Essay What have you come to understand about the intense human relationships of Hamlet? How has this understanding been affected by the perspectives of others? In you response you should focus on 3 scenes in the play and a range of perspectives. The intense human relationships of Hamlet have been viewed through numerous perspectives yet all have reached the same conclusions. With the exception of just one, the friendship of Hamlet and Horatio, all the relationships are dishonourable, dysfunctional and destined to fail. Being a revenge tragedy it is immediately clear this play is filled with lies, deceit and treachery. The exact time of Hamlet's composition is unknown, however it is assumed to be between 1599 and 1602. This was a dark,...show more content... The scene ends with Hamlet possessively demanding her "but go not to my uncle's bed" and uses multiple sexual references when he tells her to not let Claudius "Pinch wanton on your cheek, call you his mouse". Relating this to the Oedipus complex, Hamlet appears to be more like a jealous lover than a concerned son. Examining act 3 scene 4 from different perspectives gives varied insights into Gertrude and Hamlet's relationship, yet each perspective deduces that it is a dishonourable relationship with no mutual trust or respect. Another dishonourable family relationship in Hamlet is that between Ophelia and her father Polonius. Polonius manipulates Ophelia for his own benefit, treating her like a tool rather than a person. Their relationships becomes pitiful when she receives orders from her father and responds with "I shall obey, my lord", implying that she is at the service of her father. Through the analysis of act 4 scene 5 a deeper understanding can be reached about Ophelia's relationship with her late father. Following the death of Polonius, Ophelia's mind becomes unhinged as she drifts into insanity, speaking in songs and rhymes. Considering this scene from a feminists perspective it can be thought that Ophelia went mad with guilt having her desire for Hamlet to kill her father so that they can be together fulfilled. This theory strongly supports the idea that the relationship between Ophelia and Polonius Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. No Fear Hamlet Essay Is it disappointment or is it hatred? No Fear Shakespeare: Hamlet was written by William Shakespeare. Hamlet is the son of Queen Gertrude and Old King Hamlet. Hamlet returns to Denmark after the death of his father. Shortly after his father's death, his mother (Queen Gertrude) remarries. Not only does the Queen remarry to soon (in Hamlet's perspective) but out of all the men in the world she chose to marry King Claudius which also happens to be Hamlets uncle. Throughout the play, Hamlet makes it very clear that he isn't okay with the marriage of his mother and uncle. While some critics may argue that Hamlet feels hatred for his mother, I believe that he was just very disappointed in his mom and felt very upset because of the loss of his...show more content... In Shakespeare's time, this marriage would be frowned upon which is why Hamlet feels disgust towards his mother being guilty of it. He also can't believe how his mother claimed to love his father yet "betrayed" Old King Hamlet (or at least that's what Hamlet sees it as – betrayal) by marrying his brother. The marriage is what made Hamlet and his mother start having a rocky relationship. Although Hamlet didn't participate in the wedding and wasn't okay with it, he didn't hate his mother but was just very disappointed in her decision of marrying his uncle. Pursuing this further, Hamlet also felt anger throughout the play. Many things throughout the play caused for Hamlet to change from his sad stage into an anger stage. What made Hamlet transition into his anger stage was when he found out through his father's ghost that King Claudius had killed his father by pouring poison into his ear. Hamlet was filled with anger and wanted to get revenge against his uncle. Hamlet also felt anger towards his mother for marrying King Claudius (the murderer). At one–point Hamlet felt that his mother wasn't loyal and respectful towards his father. Hamlet said, "...even an animal would have mourned its mate longer than she did...even before the tears on her cheeks had dried, she remarried..." (1.2. 150–154). Hamlet felt like his mother didn't mourn his father long enough and that she disrespected his honor be remarrying Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Reflection, whether it be inward on one's self or outward, as in showing someone else who they are, has come to mean a lot in today's society and it is often something people turn to in times of hardship. In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the main character, Hamlet, is confronted with the task to avenge his father's death while his mental health seems to deteriorate and his personal and familial relationships crumble. Yet,Hamlet continues to exercise his ability to show other characters who they truly are and what Shakespeare has them represent and reflect inwards on himself and his internal conflicts throughout the play. Both of these things often resemble or allude to a mirror. Consequently, this use of mirrors in Hamlet, though not explicitly stated, is one of the reasons that the play continues to be considered one of the best literary works in Western literature. As Hamlet, who essentially functions as a mirror to everyone in the show, including himself, moves through each scene, he reflects different things: what different characters represent, their actions, and his own feelings. Although Hamlet possesses this ability to reflect other characters back onto themselves, this is not a cookie–cutter ability; he does this reflecting in different ways to different characters. This is clearly shown in the difference between his reactions one–on–one with Gertrude, his mother, and Ophelia, his lover. When interacting with Gertrude, Hamlet reflects her actions back to her by Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 14. Hamlet Essay : Hamlet's Hamartia William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is a captivating story revolving around the death of the King of Denmark and the reveal of how his death truly happened at the hands of his own brother – who wanted the kingdom to himself. After the king's death, he returns as a ghost to tell his son, Hamlet, of how his death truly happened. The rest of the story entails how Hamlet took this news and begins his journey to avenge his father's murder. As this journey progresses, the audience is able to witness Hamlet's hamartia. Hamartia is a tragic flaw which leads to the eventual downfall of a hero or heroine. Hamlet's hamartia is his inability to act and his indecisiveness regarding avenging his father's murder – which results in a horrid ending for Hamlet and most of the people he knows. Throughout "Hamlet", it is evident that Hamlet's hamartia is his inability to act and his indecisiveness. These flaws are evident throughout many aspects of his life, but are able to be identified as he attempts to avenge his father's murder. After Hamlet's father tells him in his ghostly form that he was murdered by his brother, Claudius, instead of simply going to seek revenge immediately, Hamlet makes elaborate plans to decide if Claudius is truly guilty of the murder. This is where his indecisiveness begins. Hamlet vows to his father he will avenge his death in Act I, Scene 5, "So uncle, there you are. Now to my word:" (Line 111). While Hamlet vows this to his father, he does not act on it instantly. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Hamlet's Psychological Aspect Hamlet's psychological aspect Introduction I decided to do this research work because I have enjoyed a lot reading this play: Hamlet. The inner motivations and psyche of this character have captured my attention. Therefore, the aim of this research is to depict Hamlet's attitudes during the play. I will try to approach to his real feelings on life and death taking into consideration what critics and researchers have said about Hamlet. In order to clarify Hamlet's personality and behaviour, I will provide some aspects of the historical context in which Shakespeare was inspired to write this play, and a brief summary of it to take into account the plot. Finally, I will make a conclusion in which I will try to summarise...show more content... ¬¬¬¬¬ Another important thing that researchers point out about Hamlet is that he has got an enigmatic personality. While speaking, he sounds mysterious as if there were something important hidden in his speech, even something he is not aware of. In addition to this, another important aspect to highlight about his psyche is his extremely philosophical and contemplative attitude, which has led him to face difficult questions. What is more, questions that cannot be answered with any certainty. The clearest example is the well known soliloquy in act 3 scene 1: "To be, or not to be– that is the question; whether 'tis nobler in mind to suffer¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing end them? To die, to sleep– no more, and by a sleep to say we end the heart–ache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to. 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep..." Hamlet is debating, perhaps, whether to take action to revenge his father's death, which would in all probability result in him losing his own life, or to leave things as they are. This leads him to question whether life is worth living at all. < http://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/hamlet/canalysis.html > However, despite being thoughtful to the point of obsession, other researchers assert that Hamlet acts impulsively and behaves rashly. • 16. Hamlet's Expounding Of Life As common in Hamlet's soliloquies, he is expounding on the meaning of life and how it impacts him. Hamlet is conflicted with Ophelia and the ordeal with his father and Polonius, and he once again considers ending his own life. Before meeting with Ophelia, he once again delves deep into his own mind for an answer on what to do. Hamlet once again is demonstrating his desire to end his own life; the complications occurring in his life are causing strifes for him to overcome. He is asking himself if he would rather "...be, or not...be", as in if he would rather continue living a painful life or end it. He is question whether or not life is worth living anymore, as he is consistently living in a world full of pain and injustice against his family. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In this soliloquy Hamlet's unstable state of mind is evident as well as his feelings of despair about his father's death and his disgust of his mother's remarriage to his uncle Claudius. Hamlet's hatred for his uncle is shown through harsh comparisons between Claudius and his late father. This soliloquy takes place after Claudius has begun his reign as king and has addressed the court for the first time but before Hamlet hears about the apparition that Horatio and the guards have seen. Hamlet's character and personality are shown in this soliloquy through the use of classical imagery, diction and...show more content... In the soliloquy it is shown that while Hamlet does not like his uncle he blames his mother for all that has happened especially her weak disposition that caused her to marry Claudius as seen in the line "frailty thy name is women". In the line Hamlet generalizes all women showing his instability as he does not understand the difference between his mother's actions and all women. His anger towards his mother is also shown in his comparison of her being "like Niobe all tears" because like the mythological figure Niobe she also mourned however Niobe was turned to stone and kept weaping which suggests that he considers her to be hypocritical because while she cried and mourned she remarried only a month after her husband died. This idea is also shown in the line "a beast would have mourned longer" showing that because of her betrayal he considers her to be an unfeeling animal. Hamlet's anger builds throughout the soliloquy until he comes to the realization that he cannot reveal his true thoughts to anyone "but break my heart for I must hold my tongue." Because of the anger Hamlet feels at his mother's remarriage he compares his uncle to his father the late king Hamlet. His comparisons are quite harsh such as "Hyperion to a satyr" this classical allusion shows his prejudice against his uncle by considering his father a god and his uncle to be half goat.
