The game played during chapter 4 of To Kill A Mockingbird, involving Boo Radley, shows that ignorance resides in not just the children through their
youth and imagination, but also in the adults in their uneducated/oblivious town. This is best shown when Mr. Nathan Radley passes the kids on his
way to town, and the kids stop playing, and wonder what he would think about their game. This shows that the kids know what they are doing is

The jury also showed signs of prejudice in the Scottsboro case. All twelve of the jurymen concluded a guilty verdict for the first trial ā€“ despite even
medical evidence: "it was [Jack Tiller's] semen ... that was found in [Victoria Price's] vagina" and not that of any of the alleged black boys (Linder).
The reasons the jury had for its verdict were formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge ā€“ going back to the definition of prejudice
stated in paragraph two. The jury had its decision made before the case ever made it into the courtroom. The jury consisted of all white men ā€“ but it is
not to say that a jury of all black men would have been any fairer. The prejudice during the Great Depression did not only come from the whites, many

With the racial tension so high during this time period, Tom's innocence was lost before he could even defend himself. This was shown through
Atticus's reply to Scout's question of, "Will we win?" Atticus answered no because the case was lost before it began. Tom Robinson's response to
his loss of innocence was to simply run away from the problem that had befallen him. For his attempted escape Tom suffered the highest
consequence, "They shot him,' said Atticus. 'He was running. It was during their exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge

To Kill a Mockingbird and A Time to Kill also have some rather large differences. Even though they both feature the trial of a black man betrayed
by justice they end in a rather different fashion. To Kill a Mockingbird sees Tom Robinson shot to death while attempting to escape prison after he
decides that there's no way he'll ever see a fair trial. A Time to Kill ends rather differently considering Carl Lee Hailey gets off without any
consequences due to his being declared not guilty by reason of insanity. The startling difference in the outcomes of each trial changes the message
of these stories. To Kill a Mockingbird becomes a tragic story about the death of a man without a chance; while A Time to Kill is a, mildly, happier
film about a man who seeks and finds justice and is pronounced innocent by a jury of his peers. The stories intertwine with each other in an

According to Merriam Webster, the definition of sympathy is an affinity, association, or relationship between persons or things wherein whatever
affects one similarly affects the other. Sympathy is shown all throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by, Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird is
set in a small, lonely town called Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. To Kill a Mockingbird is about two kids named Scout and Jem. Scout and Jem's
father, who they call Atticus, took a case to defend a black man. The black man named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a girl named Mayella.
Throughout the novel, Tom is treated unfairly because he is black. Tom does not get a fair trial and is later accused of raping Mayella, even though all
the evidence pointed to her father, Bob Ewell. During this novel, Scout and Jem learn that the world is not as innocent as they thought. Throughout To
Kill a Mockingbird sympathy is shown through putting yourself in someone else's situation. The characters that sympathy is shown to are Tom
Robinson, Boo Radley, and Mayella Ewell.

Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird contains a trend of empathy and compassion. Empathy and compassion allows the reader to connect with the
novel. The character who has displayed a sense of empathy and compassion is Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch makes it his goal to instill the feeling of
empathy and compassion in his children and his town. During the novel, Scout and Jem develop an emotional intelligence that allows them to

readers. This novel aids its readers in comparing race relations in the 1930s to present day race relations. First, Atticus already possesses a sense of
empathy towards others and his children. In Harper Lee's novel, Atticus says, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his
point of view ā€“ā€“ ... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" (7). Pryal uses this quote in her article stating, "this advice to try on another's
'skin' takes on greater significance" (174). She is right, because this "advice" that he gives Scout plays a much larger role in shaping Scout's
understanding of empathy. he displayed empathy so well in the novel that other scholars recognized it in Pryal's article "other scholars point to
Atticus as the model of an empathetic character" (174). Empathy is an enduring theme that explains how Atticus' point of view is ubiquitous not only
in Lee's novel, but in the readers as well. When Atticus is in front of the jail, he showed an overwhelming amount of compassion for Tom Robinson,

In books, many characters go through moral development. The book To Kill A Mockingbird shows many examples of characters that go through this

replies "'I'm sure Mr. Radley knows more about his trees than we do.'" (Lee 84). This is another example of Atticus teaching Scout morals and

Scout begins to ask questions while they walk home. She asks Cal why she talks like the other black people while she is at church. Cal tries to

To Kill a Mockingbird is about two kids named Scout and Jem. Scout and Jem's father, who they call Atticus, took a case to defend a black man. The black man named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a girl named Mayella. Throughout the novel, Tom is treated unfairly because he is black. Tom does not get a fair trial and is later accused of raping Mayella, even though all the evidence pointed to her father, Bob Ewell.
