In the SitCom, ‘People justdonothing’,we cansee thatit issetin a modern day, povertyandlower
classfilledLondon.Itisa comedyshowsetoutto show the stereotypes, whichare showedthrough
the variousdifferentcharacterswithinthe show.The episode Iwatched(series2episode 1) revolves
aroundthe everydaylife of peopleof similarsocial classasthe characters in the show.
Thisepisode inparticularshowsachristeningwhichthe charactersthemselves,due totheir‘idiocy’
and forcomedicsense tothe show, theycall it jusa “Christian”,incontextthiswouldbe said“You’re
goingto be Christian’dAngel.”Mostof the charactersare alsounemployed, exceptforChabuddy
whois self-employedandownshisownbusiness,whichitseemshe keepschangingsincedue tohis
stereotypical characterof anillegal immigrantsettingupbusinessinEngland,he doesn’tseemtobe
verysuccessful inwhathe does. The othermaineventgoingonduringthe episode isthe
competitionbetween‘Decoy’and‘Beats’,bothcompetingtobe the godfatherfortheirfriend
‘Grindah’s’Daughter, Angel. We canalso see anotherstereotype duringthisaswe cannotice the
ethnicityof Angel doesn’tmatchwithherparents,andonlywithDecoy’sethnicity.Thisisalsoa
stereotype withintheirculture,Decoyhasobviouslyhadthe childratherthanwho everyone blindly
thinksisthe actual father,‘Grindah’.Thisishintedalot,forexample whenBeatsasksDecoywhyhe
isalwaysthere forAngel andDecoysimplyreplieswith“IdunnoIjust am…”, obviouslyhe knows,as
well asMichelle,Angel’smotherwhenshe saysto‘Grindah’thatmaybe theyshouldn’thave Decoy
as the fatheras it wouldjutbe “weird”.‘Grindah’iscompletelyblindtothe factthat Decoyis
blatantlythe kid’sactual bloodrelatedfather, thissaysalot abouttheirsocial classsince cheatingis
a stereotype whichisquite popularwithinthislowerclassof social class.
Anothersocial classrepresentativewhichIalsomentionedbefore wouldbe illegal immigrants.
People of Britainconstantlycomplainaboutthemcomingovertothe countryand takingall the
potential jobswhichare runningshort.A stereotype wellknownthroughoutEnglandisthe illegal
immigrantsandtheirmanybusinesseswhichyoucanfindall overBritain,thoughmainlyinEngland.
2. INDUCTION ASSESSMENT2015
Chabuddyisthat stereotype’srepresentative withinthisshow,andclearlyshowsthatstereotype,in
quite a comedicway.He lacks the skillsanormal businessmanwouldhave,andinsteadjusttakesto
bigginghimself upwhentalkingtoMichelle,forexample sayingthingssuchas“Oh yeah I can do
anythin’man.”Andputtinghimselfoutthere,almostasif he iswillingtosell youanythinghe
possiblycould,justforhimtomake a bit of money.Eveninthe endonce he failstoproduce a T-Shirt
for Michelle whichshe likes,he takestogoingroundto anothershopwhichsellsshirts, buyingthem
fromthere and returningtosell themthe new shirtswhichhe hadn’tevenmade himself, obviously
for profit.Thissaysquite abit abouthissocial class, and he reallydoesrepresentthe social grouphe
isin well,aswell asbeingagenerallyfunnycharactertowatch.
The use of camera and mis-en-scene couldbe usedtorepresentthe social classesof the characters.
Mainlytowardsthe beginningof the show, whnthe cameraislookingaroundthemwiththe high-
rise flats, the highrise flatscouldactuallyrepresenttheirlife andhow they’re trappedintothatlife
withno escape, orvenif there isan escape, itwouldbe reallyhardto do so.The high-rise flatstower
overthemand surroundthem,enclosingtheminthe estate inwhichtheylive in,itiskindof like a
cycle of theirlife, theyare borninthe estate, like azoo, grow up inthe estate and live the exact
same life astheirparents, trappedinthisestate, surroundedbythe same people, familyandhigh-
rise flats. The camera anglesthroughoutthe show are usuallylookingdownonthe characters,as
well asa fewshotslike the sceneswhere theyare rapping, the cameralooksmore hand-held,since
it isveryshaky,thiscouldrepresenttheirlifestyle,andfinancial situationasitisveryunstable,shaky,
like the camera.Whenwe see the camera lookingdownonthe characters,we can imagine the
camera as us,and as we are rightnow watchingthese characters, lookingdownontheirsocial class,
whichinfact theymay be trappedin.
All the charactersmix in well withthe othersdespite beingadrugaddict, possiblyshowingthatthey
are all of the same social class, thoughfordifferentreasons, some are ondrugs, some are cheaters
and othersare just yourstereotypical modernday‘chav’like figure.Overall theirsocial classisall
reallylowandtheyare obviously, quiteclearlynotinthe bestof financial situationsdue tovarious
hintsthroughoutthe episode,lookingliketheybarelymanagedtomake the ‘Christianing’possible.
