Neurological Basis of Near Death Experiences: A Qualitative Meta–Analysis
The past decade has yielded a tremendous number of research focusing on the phenomenon known as Near Death Experiences (NDE). Greyson
(2000a) described near–death experiences as:
Profound psychological events with transcendental and mystical elements, typically occurring to individuals close to death or in situations of intense
physical or emotional danger. The elements include ineffability, a sense that the experience transcends personal ego, and an experience of union with a
divine or higher principle.
Incidence
The commonality of near–death experiences in the general population has been a difficult question that research has tried to answer, and one that still
remains difficult to answer due to the different methodology used among investigators (Blanke & Dieguez, 2009). But one area that research agrees
upon is that neither gender, race, nor age are strong predicators of experiencing a near–death experience. There is...show more content...
This is problematic in that it makes it nearly impossible for researchers to come to similar conclusions when studying near death experiences, especially
when they are utilizing different criteria for defining the phenomenon. This has resulted in the development of many near–death experience scales by
researchers eager to establish categorizing tools that could be used among scientists studying the phenomenon. One of the first scales that tried to
come up with a categorization system of near death features was developed by Moody (1975). Moody collected 150 reports of near death
experiences; based off of this sample, he realized that many of the participants reported a variety of phenomenological features. Using the features
reported by participants, Moody identified 15 common

What our eyes can see are limited. What our mind can imagine are also limited. In the usual cases people don't believe things exist unless their eyes
have seen. The existence of dualism of both human flesh and the spirit or the existing life and afterlife seem to be a doubtful topic. Most people's
belief seem to fall in the category of monism which "only one basic substance exists as the ground of reality" (Web Dictionary). That reality is the
human body, the materialistic world that we see everyday with our eyes made of flesh. Or in the cases where people cannot decide whether
consciousness still exists after death of the body. However, people with the testimony of near death experiences do not seem to fall in the category of
monism, but...show more content...
Those feelings were so real that she could still feel it till today. That is definitely something science cannot approve. "This light wasn't just physical, but
was giving off a living emotion" (Ian). Ian before his near death experience he considered himself an atheist. Which he only believes in a materialistic
world– monism. During his experience he first saw an eternal darkness–hell. And then he was was being able to see bright lights and also felt the
comfort of being loved like Rebecca. "God is light in Him there is no darkness" (Holy Bible, 1John 1:5). Though Ian has never read the Bible, but
he was being able to think of that during his experience, that is something not just the conscious mind is capable of providing. It's some sort of
Being or power greater than our mind could provide. It is beyond consciousness. Because his conscious does not know what he knew. "The waves
of Love ceased and I wondered if I could possibly step into the light" (Ian). With this over whelm sense of peace and the pacify of his heart aside
from the pain that he was in, there are no other possible answers to determine why this exist other than he stepped into another side of life. Another
fact that convinced me that our conscious mind lives after the death of the body is from my family stories. My mom always believed in there are
spirits exist around us that we can't see with our eyes. She believes because my grandmother had many experiences of encounter with the spirit.

Death Experiences : Near Death Experience
Near–Death Experiences Definition: A near–death experience is defined as an unusual experience which takes place on the verge of death and is
typically an out–of–body experience or a vision of a tunnel of light. Account: "My first visual memory was looking forward and seeing a brilliant
bright light, almost like looking directly at the sun. The strange thing was that I could see my feet in front of me, as if I were floating upward in a
vertical position. I do not remember passing through a tunnel or anything like that, just floating in the beautiful light. A tremendous amount of
warmth and love came from the light. "There was a standing figure in the light, shaped like a normal human being, but with no distinct facial
features. It had a masculine presence. The light I have described seemed like it emanated from that figure. Light rays shone all around him. I felt
very protected and safe and loved. "The figure in the light told me through what I now know to be mental telepathy that I must go back, that it was
not time for me to come here. I wanted to stay because I felt so full of joy and so peaceful. The voice repeated that it wasn 't my time; I had a
purpose to fulfil and I could come back after I completed it. "I began attending church at the age of five, and I would look at the picture of Jesus in
the Bible and tell my mom that 's who it was in the light. I still have many physical difficulties with my health because of being premature. But there is a

A Near Death Experience: A Case Study
A Near Death Experience is defined as "the reported memory of a range of impressions during a special state of consciousness, including a number of
special elements such as an out–of–body experience, pleasant feelings, seeing a tunnel, a light, deceased relatives or a life review, or a conscious
return into the body (van Lommel, 2014, 8)." This paper aims at trying to analyze the evidence given to understand if Near Death Experiences (NDEs)
occur and what implications they might have on our understandings of consciousness. Particularly this paper will argue that there is not enough
evidence to even say that NDEs truly happen but grants that, if they do happen, they could pose a threat to the physicalist view of consciousness.

told him it was not his time causing him to return to his body (Alexander, 2012). This claim might have been even more believable based on
Alexander's background in neuroscience until further details came to light. Luke Dittrich, in an article for Esquire Magazine sought to try and
examine Alexander's story as well as his background to try and find some validity in his claims. Dittrich explained that Alexander's expertise (as well
as his honesty) were in question, due to events surrounding his E coli incident as well as his history in the medical profession. Years prior to
Alexander contracting the strand of E. coli, he had been involved in a medical malpractice incident in which a patient had suffered from complications
following a procedure he performed. History would repeat itself when Alexander was sued for malpractice for a sum of three million dollars when he
fused together the wrong vertebrae in the patient's spine leaving the patient paralyzed, and failing to admit to his mistake until the patient's third

Introduction
Approximately three percent of the population of the U.S has said they have, in fact experienced a near death experience or NDE. While being
involved in a near death experience there are reports that consist of involving one or more of the following: having an awareness of being dead,
having an out of body experiences, feelings of euphoria, seeing a tunnel of light, and meeting deceased people.
After experiencing this phenomenon, the near death survivor often reports a non–fear of death. They may experience feelings that death is not the end,
but a new beginning in which one lives in euphoria and reunites with loved ones for eternity. Others may also have a different outlook on the
experience. Where they focus more on how...show more content...
Initial stimulations between 2 and 3 amps induced vestibular responses, which the patient reported that she was "sinking into the bead" or "falling
from a height" (Blanke, O., & O. 2002). When increasing the amplitude to 3.5 the patient began to report having an out of body experience (Blanke,
O., & O. 2002). This stimulation to the brain's right angular gyrus also created illusory transformations of the patient's arm and legs, indicating that out
of body experiences may be due to a failure of the brain to integrate complex somatosensory and vestibular information (Blanke, O., & O. 2002,
Mobbs, D., & Watt, C. 2011).
Once the researchers found that OBEs could be induced they then asked the patient who was first in a lying down position, to then sit at a ninety
degree angle and be induced again (Blanke, O., & O. 2002). The patient then described that she felt that her legs appeared to be moving quickly
towards her face (Blanke, O., & O. 2002). When placed at a forty five degree angle, this time the patient reported seeing her legs "becoming shorter"
(Blanke, O., & O. 2002). When asked to look at her arms during the electrical stimulation the patient reported as though her left arm was shortened and
the right arm was unaffected. When they repositioned her arms to ninety degree angles she reported that her

Personal Narrative: A Near Death Experience
Surviving a near death experience can have a lasting impression on an individual. The sheer unpredictability of the event as well as the immediate
danger that is presented in front of the person are two. Unfortunately, as a nine–year old, I had an unexpected encounter with a Rottweiler dog as I was
coming home from school on a rainy day. It was an experience that made me change my outlook on life and how I perceived danger in general.
I could recall my near death experience as if it were yesterday. It was a very bleak Thursday afternoon as the sun was completely obstructed by the
formation of dark clouds. The forecast for that day was predicted to be heavy showers which was surprisingly accurate considering that the
weatherman is not as reliable as you would had expected. Not wanting to...show more content...
Some people hypothesize the reason of surviving a near death experience as a stroke of blind luck, while others view it as a sign of being given a
second chance at life. However, I have another explanation which is rather out of the ordinary. When my great aunt passed from cancer, which was
two years before the incident, my mother told me that she would watch over me even when I was not around in person. Ever since her death, my
family and I would always pay a visit to the Buddhist temple every Chinese New Year to pay her respect.
Having been a part of these Buddhist customs for most of my childhood, I was taught that the dead do not actually pass away but instead ascend into a
higher place, similar to heaven. Although the incident with the dog was the only near–death experience, I was able to overcome tough obstacles such
as passing my driver's test at the D.M.V with a low success rate. Taking the miraculous outcome of my incident to account, I still wonder if what my
mother had originally said was true and if the supernatural do exist. Needless I am very thankful of my

Personal Narrative: My Near Death Experience
I have never had a near death experience. I know that many people my age haven't, though they claim that they did. I've always wondered what one
would be like and hearing stories in class about them made me feel so excited. It also made me feel that I would never put myself in a situation
where I was in danger. It made me think about if I ever had an experience what it would be about. This is some of my basic thoughts about neardeath
experiences.
I got excited about the near death stories because sometimes they have twists or they have electrifying details that add to the suspense. When you
sit on the sidelines it doesn't seem as scary, and it almost looks appealing. The story about going down a water slide and running into an overweight
woman seemed hilarious at the time, but if I was in the situation I wouldn't know how to act. It is the whole "Every rose has its thorns." That is
something that I will probably have to learn the hard way because I'm stubborn and I don't like people telling me what I can and can't do. My only
hope is that I don't hurt someone else while doing it....show more content...
I believe that I am a very responsible person, so something like that ever happening to me seems impossible. The story about the man who fell
asleep at the wheel and almost ran head on into a car doesn't seem like something that would happen to me, but I know one day I will think that I can
make it home and not have to stop and that day I fall asleep at the wheel. I would hope that I would stop the situation from occurring, but there is a
chance that I will overestimate my skill

A Near-Death Experience Near Death
Is there a plausibility that beyond death, life exists? A minority of people deem the possibility there is life beyond death, for they experienced
near–death. An individual who is considered clinically dead and resuscitated to entail the experience of near–death (Roe). However, death isn't simple,
there isn't a precise definition for it. The view of death challenged due to medical advances in technology. In modern times, death thought to occur when
one's vital functions, the lungs, the heart, blood flow, and brain activity ceases (Death and Dying: Becker). Nevertheless, medical advances in
technology can continuously sustain a person's life through mechanical means, maintaining respiration, and cardiac functions (Death and Dying).
According to Carl Becker death occurs when the central brain functions are unrestorable. How are near–death experiences defined?

Bede, born in Northumbria, recalled seeing a 'gracious Being in shining robes' and a beautiful place where he saw other people (Varghese, 85).
Also, Gilles Bedard, born in Quebec, recalled an out of body experience and seeing 'a group of dazzlingly white people who did not appear to have

A Near Death Experience
Sometimes a little near death experience helps them put things into perspective ~Annie Shropshire. Near death experiences can be scary. Many people
have had near death experiences. A lot of near death experiences have certain things in common that occur during and afterward. Some of these things
are: change in priorities, time distortion, and fear. These are the three most common things to experience.
Change in priorities is the thing that you hold more important than any other thing in your life changes to something different. After Tom Benecke had
his near death experience he saw spending time with his wife was more important than a piece of paper." As he saw the yellow paper, the pencil
flying, scooped off the desk and, unimpeded by the glassless window, sail out into the night and out of his life, Tom Benecke burst into laughter and

The idea of leaving this world scared me into reform. I realized that I had been drifting through life ignorant of everything around me; some changes
were in order. The things that had not been important to me before, became important. Ideas that I had laughed at, I took into consideration. My
entire view on life came crashing down and in its midst came a revelation. Life is a game of Russian roulette, and everyday the trigger is pulled. One
must consider every action because that action could be the final action. Formulating this idea was easy, but actually applying it was harder than I had
anticipated. The reformation process began with my family. Instead of questioning all aspects of their authority, I started to listen to what they had to
say. Likewise, rather than procrastinating with my chores, I acomplished them by their deadline. As time went by, I slowly morphed from the young
bratty kid of old, to a responsible young woman. Gaining my parents trust proved to be to my advantage. Certain rewards were given to me, which
I did not deserve before. My allowance increased, my curfew became more lenient and I was badgered less often. By going forth and actively
pursuing the reformation process I slowly began to turn into the person I am today. The world of academics was the next aspect of my life to reform
on my agenda.
Before my revelation I had barely passed through school. I never gave

Near death experiences are far from being serene and will cause your heart to race. For example, you know that feeling you get when the roller

When you almost meet death straight on and barely miss it, you feel like it takes an eternity. Now, that may be an exaggeration, but it does feel
like it is longer than what it truly is. Most near death experiences are quick like the speed of lightning, but your mind tends to make you believe
otherwise. For example, Isabelle stated that when she was in the wreck she felt as if someone had paused all the motion going on around her then
all at once everything started to play in slow motion. Tom Benecke had felt the same way, but instead of his being a car crash, it would have been a

Near Death Experiences
There is a great deal of skepticism about near–death experiences. While there are many written accounts available in medical and scientific journals,
which describe near–death experiences, the phenomenon still raises questions. Some think that they are merely dreams, while others believe that they
are actual windows showing them of what is to come in the after life. In this essay, I will try to provide positive evidence to suggest that they are
indeed real, through facts, polls, scientific studies and personal stories from near–death experiences. To begin, I would like to define a near–death

News & World Report). After conducting many studies, scientists have concluded that near–death experiences happen in five sequential stages: Stage
one– feeling blissful sensations throughout the body. Stage two– the spirit leaving the physical body itself. Stage three– the spirit entering through a
dark tunnel. Stage four– the spirit perceiving a bright light. Stage five– the spirit entering the bright light. These are just two of the numerous results
from polls and studies conducted by scientists, to prove the realness of near–death experiences. Additionally, most of the scientific research has many
things in common, (the stages listed above are a good example). In my research, I also found numerous personal accounts from people who have
revealed their near–death experiences to others. For example, Maria Rodrigues of Toronto, Canada, who was in the hospital for immediate brain
surgery, claims that she felt herself dying. "I remember going through a big tunnel, then coming out into a wondrous light. I wasn't afraid. I felt very
much at home. It was a place of pleasant peace and love" (no author, The Toronto Star). Former leader of the Alberta New Democratic Party, Pam
Barrett, also from Canada, can relate. The 46–year–old woman was having dental surgery done when her throat swelled up, preventing her from
breathing. "I knew I was dying. While gasping for air, I made the sign of the cross and died. I was traveling slowly through a tunnel

The Near–Death Experience The thought of death and my grandfather colliding with each other had troubled and depressed me. All of us were rolling

any occasion. Nervously doing so, she rushed to the phone as quick as a deer to call 911. It had frightened me to think about what her face had

Near Death Experience
It was a warm fall day in early October, a day that I recall quite vividly. The smells of the transition from summer to fall were in the air, accompanied
by the sounds of birds singing and the wind blowing through the trees. It was on this beautiful day that my existence was almost terminated. A quick
hunting trip could have ended my life.
After school on this day, a friend and I decided to go hunting before our evening basketball practice. I really don't know why we called it hunting,
because we didn't have an idea exactly what we were hunting for. We had forty acres of my backyard to do our merciless killing of defenseless
animals. We were two ignorant kids with semi–automatic and lever–action .22 caliber rifles....show more content...
Immediately we ran to the tree, firing our guns as if we both were in an infantry fighting a battle. One, two, three squirrels were dropped out of the tree
by our deadeye–aimed shots. As we gazed over the dead corpses, we contemplated the need to shoot these animals for no obvious reason. Was it our
insatiable compulsion to shoot the guns or a morbid goal to shoot the squirrels on the run? Apparently it was an odd mixture of both cases. As guilty as
we might have felt for shooting them, we searched for more life to murder.
Soon enough, however, we seemed to become bored with our adventure and decided that our excitement for the day had ended, so we began our
short journey back to my house. On the way back, we stopped briefly by the tree that supplied the three squirrels we killed previously. I then
continued walking, but my friend had noticed a squirrel clinging to the trunk of the tree. I was on the opposite side of the tree from him, about forty
feet away from my fellow gunslinger. As I turned around, I noticed I was in the direct line of his firing range. Before I had time to warn him of the
unsafe situation, I saw the shots. Three consecutive discharges of his gun snapped the scene into slow motion. Fire and smoke billowed out of his
gun after each bullet was released. The sound of the shots was deafened by my own fear, although I could hear the bullets whizzing inches from my
head. As bullets pierced the air right next

Near-Death Experience Thesis

  • 1. Near-Death Experience Thesis Neurological Basis of Near Death Experiences: A Qualitative Meta–Analysis The past decade has yielded a tremendous number of research focusing on the phenomenon known as Near Death Experiences (NDE). Greyson (2000a) described near–death experiences as: Profound psychological events with transcendental and mystical elements, typically occurring to individuals close to death or in situations of intense physical or emotional danger. The elements include ineffability, a sense that the experience transcends personal ego, and an experience of union with a divine or higher principle. Incidence The commonality of near–death experiences in the general population has been a difficult question that research has tried to answer, and one that still remains difficult to answer due to the different methodology used among investigators (Blanke & Dieguez, 2009). But one area that research agrees upon is that neither gender, race, nor age are strong predicators of experiencing a near–death experience. There is...show more content... This is problematic in that it makes it nearly impossible for researchers to come to similar conclusions when studying near death experiences, especially when they are utilizing different criteria for defining the phenomenon. This has resulted in the development of many near–death experience scales by researchers eager to establish categorizing tools that could be used among scientists studying the phenomenon. One of the first scales that tried to come up with a categorization system of near death features was developed by Moody (1975). Moody collected 150 reports of near death experiences; based off of this sample, he realized that many of the participants reported a variety of phenomenological features. Using the features reported by participants, Moody identified 15 common Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Near Death Experiences Essay What our eyes can see are limited. What our mind can imagine are also limited. In the usual cases people don't believe things exist unless their eyes have seen. The existence of dualism of both human flesh and the spirit or the existing life and afterlife seem to be a doubtful topic. Most people's belief seem to fall in the category of monism which "only one basic substance exists as the ground of reality" (Web Dictionary). That reality is the human body, the materialistic world that we see everyday with our eyes made of flesh. Or in the cases where people cannot decide whether consciousness still exists after death of the body. However, people with the testimony of near death experiences do not seem to fall in the category of monism, but...show more content... Those feelings were so real that she could still feel it till today. That is definitely something science cannot approve. "This light wasn't just physical, but was giving off a living emotion" (Ian). Ian before his near death experience he considered himself an atheist. Which he only believes in a materialistic world– monism. During his experience he first saw an eternal darkness–hell. And then he was was being able to see bright lights and also felt the comfort of being loved like Rebecca. "God is light in Him there is no darkness" (Holy Bible, 1John 1:5). Though Ian has never read the Bible, but he was being able to think of that during his experience, that is something not just the conscious mind is capable of providing. It's some sort of Being or power greater than our mind could provide. It is beyond consciousness. Because his conscious does not know what he knew. "The waves of Love ceased and I wondered if I could possibly step into the light" (Ian). With this over whelm sense of peace and the pacify of his heart aside from the pain that he was in, there are no other possible answers to determine why this exist other than he stepped into another side of life. Another fact that convinced me that our conscious mind lives after the death of the body is from my family stories. My mom always believed in there are spirits exist around us that we can't see with our eyes. She believes because my grandmother had many experiences of encounter with the spirit. • 3. Death Experiences : Near Death Experience Near–Death Experiences Definition: A near–death experience is defined as an unusual experience which takes place on the verge of death and is typically an out–of–body experience or a vision of a tunnel of light. Account: "My first visual memory was looking forward and seeing a brilliant bright light, almost like looking directly at the sun. The strange thing was that I could see my feet in front of me, as if I were floating upward in a vertical position. I do not remember passing through a tunnel or anything like that, just floating in the beautiful light. A tremendous amount of warmth and love came from the light. "There was a standing figure in the light, shaped like a normal human being, but with no distinct facial features. It had a masculine presence. The light I have described seemed like it emanated from that figure. Light rays shone all around him. I felt very protected and safe and loved. "The figure in the light told me through what I now know to be mental telepathy that I must go back, that it was not time for me to come here. I wanted to stay because I felt so full of joy and so peaceful. The voice repeated that it wasn 't my time; I had a purpose to fulfil and I could come back after I completed it. "I began attending church at the age of five, and I would look at the picture of Jesus in the Bible and tell my mom that 's who it was in the light. I still have many physical difficulties with my health because of being premature. But there is a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. A Near Death Experience: A Case Study A Near Death Experience is defined as "the reported memory of a range of impressions during a special state of consciousness, including a number of special elements such as an out–of–body experience, pleasant feelings, seeing a tunnel, a light, deceased relatives or a life review, or a conscious return into the body (van Lommel, 2014, 8)." This paper aims at trying to analyze the evidence given to understand if Near Death Experiences (NDEs) occur and what implications they might have on our understandings of consciousness. Particularly this paper will argue that there is not enough evidence to even say that NDEs truly happen but grants that, if they do happen, they could pose a threat to the physicalist view of consciousness. NDEs are very...show more content... coli. Alexander claimed that during his experience he had flown on butterfly wings and got to meet a biological sister he had never known who told him it was not his time causing him to return to his body (Alexander, 2012). This claim might have been even more believable based on Alexander's background in neuroscience until further details came to light. Luke Dittrich, in an article for Esquire Magazine sought to try and examine Alexander's story as well as his background to try and find some validity in his claims. Dittrich explained that Alexander's expertise (as well as his honesty) were in question, due to events surrounding his E coli incident as well as his history in the medical profession. Years prior to Alexander contracting the strand of E. coli, he had been involved in a medical malpractice incident in which a patient had suffered from complications following a procedure he performed. History would repeat itself when Alexander was sued for malpractice for a sum of three million dollars when he fused together the wrong vertebrae in the patient's spine leaving the patient paralyzed, and failing to admit to his mistake until the patient's third follow–up visit. Dittrich challenged different aspects of Alexanders claim to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Near Death Experience Essay Introduction Approximately three percent of the population of the U.S has said they have, in fact experienced a near death experience or NDE. While being involved in a near death experience there are reports that consist of involving one or more of the following: having an awareness of being dead, having an out of body experiences, feelings of euphoria, seeing a tunnel of light, and meeting deceased people. After experiencing this phenomenon, the near death survivor often reports a non–fear of death. They may experience feelings that death is not the end, but a new beginning in which one lives in euphoria and reunites with loved ones for eternity. Others may also have a different outlook on the experience. Where they focus more on how...show more content... Initial stimulations between 2 and 3 amps induced vestibular responses, which the patient reported that she was "sinking into the bead" or "falling from a height" (Blanke, O., & O. 2002). When increasing the amplitude to 3.5 the patient began to report having an out of body experience (Blanke, O., & O. 2002). This stimulation to the brain's right angular gyrus also created illusory transformations of the patient's arm and legs, indicating that out of body experiences may be due to a failure of the brain to integrate complex somatosensory and vestibular information (Blanke, O., & O. 2002, Mobbs, D., & Watt, C. 2011). Once the researchers found that OBEs could be induced they then asked the patient who was first in a lying down position, to then sit at a ninety degree angle and be induced again (Blanke, O., & O. 2002). The patient then described that she felt that her legs appeared to be moving quickly towards her face (Blanke, O., & O. 2002). When placed at a forty five degree angle, this time the patient reported seeing her legs "becoming shorter" (Blanke, O., & O. 2002). When asked to look at her arms during the electrical stimulation the patient reported as though her left arm was shortened and the right arm was unaffected. When they repositioned her arms to ninety degree angles she reported that her Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Personal Narrative: A Near Death Experience Surviving a near death experience can have a lasting impression on an individual. The sheer unpredictability of the event as well as the immediate danger that is presented in front of the person are two. Unfortunately, as a nine–year old, I had an unexpected encounter with a Rottweiler dog as I was coming home from school on a rainy day. It was an experience that made me change my outlook on life and how I perceived danger in general. I could recall my near death experience as if it were yesterday. It was a very bleak Thursday afternoon as the sun was completely obstructed by the formation of dark clouds. The forecast for that day was predicted to be heavy showers which was surprisingly accurate considering that the weatherman is not as reliable as you would had expected. Not wanting to...show more content... Some people hypothesize the reason of surviving a near death experience as a stroke of blind luck, while others view it as a sign of being given a second chance at life. However, I have another explanation which is rather out of the ordinary. When my great aunt passed from cancer, which was two years before the incident, my mother told me that she would watch over me even when I was not around in person. Ever since her death, my family and I would always pay a visit to the Buddhist temple every Chinese New Year to pay her respect. Having been a part of these Buddhist customs for most of my childhood, I was taught that the dead do not actually pass away but instead ascend into a higher place, similar to heaven. Although the incident with the dog was the only near–death experience, I was able to overcome tough obstacles such as passing my driver's test at the D.M.V with a low success rate. Taking the miraculous outcome of my incident to account, I still wonder if what my mother had originally said was true and if the supernatural do exist. Needless I am very thankful of my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Narrative Essay-Near Death Experience Dante HarrisHarris 1 Professor Yates English 103 3 October 2012 Beautiful Summer Days To A Cold Sad End It's occasionally said that human beings are the only creatures who are aware of their own death, but is this actually true? The term death is often used lightly and has been made into something of an unimportant subject. Fact of the matter is that many of us don't want to think about death, we live in a death denying culture. Few individuals truly grasp the concept of death and how it can distort the lives of the people it comes in contact with. I was among the naГЇve until right before my senior year of High School. The next day after having the best day of my life began the longest and most terrifying day of my life. I awoke the next day to my younger brother telling me my mom wanted me. I didn't question why my mom wanted me, I just began grabbing some clothes to throw on and race up the stairs. I slowly approach the stairs to my parents' bedroom where I begin to ponder why she wanted me. I turn the corner to see my mom doing her hair. She looked at me through the mirror and she said "So Dante here's a funny story your dad just told me..." I began to question why she wanted to tell me about a story my dad told her but I continue to listen. She continues by saying "He drove to Tim Horton's for breakfast today!" then it hit me "I was busted!!" She finished the story and then asked why Dante would you do that and she began tell me all this stuff, but for some reason I couldn't hear it. All I could hear was my thoughts of how I messed up big time, how I was going to lose my job, how I disappointed my parents, and most importantly how I screwed up my life. Suddenly, I began to feel weak and light headed. Next thing I know I blacked out down the stairs. After I blacked out my mom turned around to see me falling back steadily and raced to grab me, but she wasn't Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Personal Narrative: My Near Death Experience I have never had a near death experience. I know that many people my age haven't, though they claim that they did. I've always wondered what one would be like and hearing stories in class about them made me feel so excited. It also made me feel that I would never put myself in a situation where I was in danger. It made me think about if I ever had an experience what it would be about. This is some of my basic thoughts about neardeath experiences. I got excited about the near death stories because sometimes they have twists or they have electrifying details that add to the suspense. When you sit on the sidelines it doesn't seem as scary, and it almost looks appealing. The story about going down a water slide and running into an overweight woman seemed hilarious at the time, but if I was in the situation I wouldn't know how to act. It is the whole "Every rose has its thorns." That is something that I will probably have to learn the hard way because I'm stubborn and I don't like people telling me what I can and can't do. My only hope is that I don't hurt someone else while doing it....show more content... I believe that I am a very responsible person, so something like that ever happening to me seems impossible. The story about the man who fell asleep at the wheel and almost ran head on into a car doesn't seem like something that would happen to me, but I know one day I will think that I can make it home and not have to stop and that day I fall asleep at the wheel. I would hope that I would stop the situation from occurring, but there is a chance that I will overestimate my skill Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. A Near-Death Experience Near Death Is there a plausibility that beyond death, life exists? A minority of people deem the possibility there is life beyond death, for they experienced near–death. An individual who is considered clinically dead and resuscitated to entail the experience of near–death (Roe). However, death isn't simple, there isn't a precise definition for it. The view of death challenged due to medical advances in technology. In modern times, death thought to occur when one's vital functions, the lungs, the heart, blood flow, and brain activity ceases (Death and Dying: Becker). Nevertheless, medical advances in technology can continuously sustain a person's life through mechanical means, maintaining respiration, and cardiac functions (Death and Dying). According to Carl Becker death occurs when the central brain functions are unrestorable. How are near–death experiences defined? Finally, Gwenllian, in Cardiff, recalled being aware of 'a massively powerful presence, and she felt great comfort of the presence' (Varghese, 88). • 10. Personal Narrative: Near Death Experiences Is the afterlife real and is there something beyond this world? I have always believed that heaven is a real place yet skeptical about the stories that I read about others having near death experiences. That all changed on August 9, 2010. A day just like any other day turned into the worst and scariest day of my life. The events of the day are forever burned in my memory. That is the day I became a member of the near death experience club. I now know that near death experiences are real and people do experience them. • 11. A Near Death Experience Sometimes a little near death experience helps them put things into perspective ~Annie Shropshire. Near death experiences can be scary. Many people have had near death experiences. A lot of near death experiences have certain things in common that occur during and afterward. Some of these things are: change in priorities, time distortion, and fear. These are the three most common things to experience. Change in priorities is the thing that you hold more important than any other thing in your life changes to something different. After Tom Benecke had his near death experience he saw spending time with his wife was more important than a piece of paper." As he saw the yellow paper, the pencil flying, scooped off the desk and, unimpeded by the glassless window, sail out into the night and out of his life, Tom Benecke burst into laughter and then closed the door behind him." • 12. My Near Death Experience Essay The term death is often used lightly. It is frequently used in jokes and idle threats, and rarely taken seriously. Few individuals really grasp the concept of death and how it can distort the lives of the people it comes in contact with. I was among the clueless until I was ten years old. I was running home from soccer practice, speeding towards the cursed intersection, not but a quartermile from my house when it happened. Luckily I am here today to reflect on that moment. My near death experience has tremendously changed the way I live and perceive life, thus defining who I am. It was a brisk fall evening, the orange sun was just setting when I foolishly misjudged how fast a car was moving. It seemed as if I had enough...show more content... The idea of leaving this world scared me into reform. I realized that I had been drifting through life ignorant of everything around me; some changes were in order. The things that had not been important to me before, became important. Ideas that I had laughed at, I took into consideration. My entire view on life came crashing down and in its midst came a revelation. Life is a game of Russian roulette, and everyday the trigger is pulled. One must consider every action because that action could be the final action. Formulating this idea was easy, but actually applying it was harder than I had anticipated. The reformation process began with my family. Instead of questioning all aspects of their authority, I started to listen to what they had to say. Likewise, rather than procrastinating with my chores, I acomplished them by their deadline. As time went by, I slowly morphed from the young bratty kid of old, to a responsible young woman. Gaining my parents trust proved to be to my advantage. Certain rewards were given to me, which I did not deserve before. My allowance increased, my curfew became more lenient and I was badgered less often. By going forth and actively pursuing the reformation process I slowly began to turn into the person I am today. The world of academics was the next aspect of my life to reform on my agenda. Before my revelation I had barely passed through school. I never gave Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Near Death Experience Research Paper Near death experiences are far from being serene and will cause your heart to race. For example, you know that feeling you get when the roller coaster begins to go downward and it feels like your heart is in your throat? Well, that is the experience you get when you have a near death experience. Now, some are preventable, while others are not. If you were to ask those that have had a date with death and make it out alive, you will learn they all share the same characteristics: change in perspective, time slows down, and adrenaline rush. When it comes to a change in priorities Tom Benecke, Scott Lear, Patrick Daniels, and Isabelle Knarr, they all had a change of heart. For Isabelle and Patrick they learned that you do not have to rush into things. It is best to slow down and take it...show more content... When you almost meet death straight on and barely miss it, you feel like it takes an eternity. Now, that may be an exaggeration, but it does feel like it is longer than what it truly is. Most near death experiences are quick like the speed of lightning, but your mind tends to make you believe otherwise. For example, Isabelle stated that when she was in the wreck she felt as if someone had paused all the motion going on around her then all at once everything started to play in slow motion. Tom Benecke had felt the same way, but instead of his being a car crash, it would have been a crash to the hard concrete eleven floors below. As Tom states " It wasn't possible, but only eight minutes ago he had kissed his wife good –by," (Pearson, ) showing that he felt as if he had been there for longer than what he truly had. For Patrick, he felt like he was falling from the sky for what seemed like an hour before the backup parachute finally escaped from the bag, but it had only been a second. As for Scott he felt like it took hours before the helicopters got there to evacuate him to the hospital so his wounds could be tended Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Near Death Experiences Essay Near Death Experiences There is a great deal of skepticism about near–death experiences. While there are many written accounts available in medical and scientific journals, which describe near–death experiences, the phenomenon still raises questions. Some think that they are merely dreams, while others believe that they are actual windows showing them of what is to come in the after life. In this essay, I will try to provide positive evidence to suggest that they are indeed real, through facts, polls, scientific studies and personal stories from near–death experiences. To begin, I would like to define a near–death experience. It is a time when the body shuts down. The lungs stop breathing, the heart stops beating, and blood ceases to...show more content... News & World Report). After conducting many studies, scientists have concluded that near–death experiences happen in five sequential stages: Stage one– feeling blissful sensations throughout the body. Stage two– the spirit leaving the physical body itself. Stage three– the spirit entering through a dark tunnel. Stage four– the spirit perceiving a bright light. Stage five– the spirit entering the bright light. These are just two of the numerous results from polls and studies conducted by scientists, to prove the realness of near–death experiences. Additionally, most of the scientific research has many things in common, (the stages listed above are a good example). In my research, I also found numerous personal accounts from people who have revealed their near–death experiences to others. For example, Maria Rodrigues of Toronto, Canada, who was in the hospital for immediate brain surgery, claims that she felt herself dying. "I remember going through a big tunnel, then coming out into a wondrous light. I wasn't afraid. I felt very much at home. It was a place of pleasant peace and love" (no author, The Toronto Star). Former leader of the Alberta New Democratic Party, Pam Barrett, also from Canada, can relate. The 46–year–old woman was having dental surgery done when her throat swelled up, preventing her from breathing. "I knew I was dying. While gasping for air, I made the sign of the cross and died. • 17. Near Death Research Paper The Near–Death Experience The thought of death and my grandfather colliding with each other had troubled and depressed me. All of us were rolling through life just fine. Then, I was stunned that the ball might stop rolling for him. His life took a very sharp turn and all of ours had done so too. My day had been perfectly well until my happiness went to an utter discontinuation. My mother had received the call. His heart was immensely affecting him. My grandfather was in his house, not feeling very well due to a battle with pneumonia. He was in the quiet home by himself as a result of my grandmother being gone and busy. It was a peaceful afternoon and a normal day for all of us. All of a sudden, WHAM! He was starting to experience extreme chest pain. This had caused him to call her. He had said, "You need to come home right now because I don't feel well." She began to worry because something like this would never happen on any occasion. Nervously doing so, she rushed to the phone as quick as a deer to call 911. It had frightened me to think about what her face had looked like. I do think that the shotgun belonged there, buried in the woods, resting with the memory of the man who brought it to life. I recount all of my escapades with my father, and mother as I'm sitting in the Herkimer County Sheriff's office. The place seems to have a silent air to it, from the loss of it's fallen leader. Here is where I start to wonder about Sheriff Senn himself, did he have a wife and kids? Did I take him away from the people that loved him the most? Now I've given someone the grief that I felt when I lost my mother. How could I do that? I don't know why but, a sick feeling of power came over me, knowing that I could toy, and play with people's emotions like that. Some officer unknown to me grabs me by the shirt collar and jerks me up. "C'mon Steele, we're going to the back" he snarls, handling me as if I'm a stray dog, mangy and unwanted. I've always seen interrogation rooms in cop shows, but when you're actually in one, it's a lot scarier. • 19. Near Death Experience Essay Near Death Experience It was a warm fall day in early October, a day that I recall quite vividly. The smells of the transition from summer to fall were in the air, accompanied by the sounds of birds singing and the wind blowing through the trees. It was on this beautiful day that my existence was almost terminated. A quick hunting trip could have ended my life. After school on this day, a friend and I decided to go hunting before our evening basketball practice. I really don't know why we called it hunting, because we didn't have an idea exactly what we were hunting for. We had forty acres of my backyard to do our merciless killing of defenseless animals. We were two ignorant kids with semi–automatic and lever–action .22 caliber rifles....show more content... Immediately we ran to the tree, firing our guns as if we both were in an infantry fighting a battle. One, two, three squirrels were dropped out of the tree by our deadeye–aimed shots. As we gazed over the dead corpses, we contemplated the need to shoot these animals for no obvious reason. Was it our insatiable compulsion to shoot the guns or a morbid goal to shoot the squirrels on the run? Apparently it was an odd mixture of both cases. As guilty as we might have felt for shooting them, we searched for more life to murder. Soon enough, however, we seemed to become bored with our adventure and decided that our excitement for the day had ended, so we began our short journey back to my house. On the way back, we stopped briefly by the tree that supplied the three squirrels we killed previously. I then continued walking, but my friend had noticed a squirrel clinging to the trunk of the tree. I was on the opposite side of the tree from him, about forty feet away from my fellow gunslinger. As I turned around, I noticed I was in the direct line of his firing range. Before I had time to warn him of the unsafe situation, I saw the shots. Three consecutive discharges of his gun snapped the scene into slow motion. Fire and smoke billowed out of his gun after each bullet was released. The sound of the shots was deafened by my own fear, although I could hear the bullets whizzing inches from my head. As bullets pierced the air right next Get more content on HelpWriting.net
