We imagine a world where Martha, a 14 year-old,
was afraid to talk to the school principal but
managed to be brave enough to ask anonymously
questions and seek for aid using technology she
has at her disposal.
We also imagine a world where Michelle, a district superintendent, calls an expert in LGBT inclusion to talk
at 3 schools because she sees increased anonymous conversations suffering from this topic. She can also
measure the impact and mitigations effects of this initiative over time.

Frequently asked questions
Why SMS?
We chose SMS because it is the lowest common denominator we can safely expect anyone with a mobile device to
have. There is no app to download, specific version of operating system or phone model to have. Also, SMS
messaging is most frequently part of any basic mobile phone service plan.
Is this some sort of emergency system?
NO. An emergency system is 911. However, ZeroAcoso is a real time system and staffers operating such system
could, in theory, respond immediately to incidents being reported in real time. We do know however, that the system
is usually best suited for ongoing and long term aid to a student having difficulties in general and not where no
immediate action is required.
What about abuse; what if someone abuses the system?
The system will flag messages of high suspicion, based on content or frequency of transmission ,allowing a staffer
to blacklist such number. The sender will be sent a message discouraging the abuse of the system and marked in
the system as potential previous abuser.
Where is all the information stored? Is it safe?
The data is securely stored at redundant datacenters, complying with the highest security measures. The content of
the messages is encrypted and can only be read by authorized staffers at each institution.

ZeroAcoso.org – Our Vision We imagine a world where Martha, a 14 year-old, was afraid to talk to the school principal but managed to be brave enough to ask anonymously questions and seek for aid using technology she has at her disposal. We also imagine a world where Michelle, a district superintendent, calls an expert in LGBT inclusion to talk at 3 schools because she sees increased anonymous conversations suffering from this topic. She can also measure the impact and mitigations effects of this initiative over time.
  • 14. Frequently asked questions Why SMS? We chose SMS because it is the lowest common denominator we can safely expect anyone with a mobile device to have. There is no app to download, specific version of operating system or phone model to have. Also, SMS messaging is most frequently part of any basic mobile phone service plan. Is this some sort of emergency system? NO. An emergency system is 911. However, ZeroAcoso is a real time system and staffers operating such system could, in theory, respond immediately to incidents being reported in real time. We do know however, that the system is usually best suited for ongoing and long term aid to a student having difficulties in general and not where no immediate action is required. What about abuse; what if someone abuses the system? The system will flag messages of high suspicion, based on content or frequency of transmission ,allowing a staffer to blacklist such number. The sender will be sent a message discouraging the abuse of the system and marked in the system as potential previous abuser. Where is all the information stored? Is it safe? The data is securely stored at redundant datacenters, complying with the highest security measures. The content of the messages is encrypted and can only be read by authorized staffers at each institution. FAQ
