3. Research
The strengths of my research would be my research into the current
existing products as I mostly enjoyed listening to different forms of
documentaries and audio plays and so focused a lot more on the products
which lead to me having more information about them. The reasons why
my research into existing products is a strength is that there is a difference
in types of audio as there is 2 documentaries and 2 audio plays as this
gave me a chance to understand the different layouts that I could use as
both the documentaries and audio plays have similarities and differences
as they all used transition periods with a use of music/jingles etc. my
secondary audience research was a strength as I knew what I needed to
research and since there isn't much big platforms for audio the only one
was BBC Sounds and so I found a questionnaire they had created about
BBC sounds popular areas and its main audience demographic which was
the elderly and so it helped me understand who I should be aiming my
product at which changed the way idea of my project.
The weaknesses of my research would be the amount of subject research
I’d completed and also the amount of reflection I had done on my
experiments as my time management was poor and I had fallen behind in
the research so I had to come back to it at the end of every lesson for 30
mins to try to finish it and so nearer the end the work begins to slack as
such. A weakness in my work was also that I did not go deeper with my
subject research as I should have researched into different parts of Market
Weighton and not in general as if I researched into select parts of
Weighton that I could have used as context or in my interviews as
questions it would have definitely helped me with producing my
questions etc.
4. Research
My research helped my product as the different aspects helped me
understand how my project should be produced as my secondary
audience helped me a lot with how the actual product should be like so it
is appealing enough to the main demographic that will consume it as I
wanted to make the product to be aimed at a younger audience but from
what I found in my research I couldn't have done that as the youth do not
consume audio products as much as the elderly and so it would be a
smarter idea to aim at the main consumer. To improve my research I think
I definitely could have gone more in depth with my research, especially
subject and practical research as there is not enough knowledge found
from the research as a few parts of my practical research isn't useful at all
as it didn't link into my final product at all and I since some were not
useful I struggled to find information that I could use to write about
leading to a lot of my experiments not having in depth reflections and also
if I made an experiment that wasn’t on editing and on GrargeBand it
would have helped me understand how the software works as I had never
used it before and during production it took me a while to understand
how to create sounds and use the actual software correctly. If I improved
them 2 parts to the research I would have effected the rest of m product
as if could have improved my experiments that linked into my product it
most likely would have sped up my production leaving me more time to
improve my final edit. Also I I improved my subject it also would have sped
up my production as it would have helped me create my questions and
create questions which may have lead to good interesting answers which
could have provided me with more content to work with in the interview
parts.
5. Planning
In the beginning of my initial plans my ideas were a lot different to my idea in my pre-
production as I began researching into a more comical audio play and eventually ended up
making a serious audio documentary about Market Weighton, as in my initial plans the
mood board was eventually useless due to it having zero links into my final product which
led to my research struggling to find examples of what I could have looked into.
The strengths of my planning was the later part in my pre-production as I found it quite
easy to write up a lot of questions that I could narrow down when in production as I
created my questions which a lot of them were not used in production due to it of them
being linked into more political routes and almost would have made my documentary on
Market Weighton as a whole about Market Weightons political issues etc. and as a lot of
them were not used which could be classed as a weakness as I did create a lot of useless
questions which were not needed. Another strength to my pre-production was my
contingency, health and safety planning were strengths due to having to create them for
every other project we have done so the health and safety planning is very similar to the
audio project from earlier on in the year so it was much easier. The weaknesses are due to
my idea changing completely that my initial plans are very different to my pre-production
and so seeing as my idea changed the initial plans was quiet useless for when it came to
planning for my final project as I couldn't look back at my past work as it had no link to my
current idea. My original script was a weakness due to it being written for my 1st idea and
was fairly time consuming as it was a full script and so my idea had changed which meant I
didn't’t have to write up a full script which also helped towards my time management and
later helped me during production as I wasn’t needing to catch-up with any past work in
my planning as my new idea was much easier to plan and eventually create .
6. Planning
My planning did not help my product in the longer run as it was all too vague and a lot of
my planning did not make sense due to it being a combination of two ideas and so when I
went to go back through my work to understand what I was going to be making when it
came to my actual production I struggled to finalise my idea and so a lot of my planning
needed to be changed and improved so it would make sense for my actual product.
I could have improved most of my planning as it eventually was useless for my final product
and so I could have improved my mood board and also my scripts as if I was to improve my
mood boards they definitely would have helped me with my research as I could have used
them as inspiration to know what I should be researching into as I struggled to find
products that were similar and a lot of my subject research would have benefitted from
having a good, relatable mood board to look back at and help me understand what types of
products I should be looking at. I would have liked to improve my Pre-Production as it was
very time consuming as I spent too much time on a script which was not going to be used
due to my idea changing so late on in the project.
These would all have effected my entire product as it would helped my time management
as I did spend a lot of time on research and did not finished it in time and so if I was allowed
extra time in my initial plans it would have made my research easier to understand and
create and also if I was given extra rime in Pre-Production I could have improved my scripts
which would have also allowed me to start on my production a bit eelier which would have
been helpful.
7. Time Management
I do not think I managed my time well which is a common occurrence
throughout every project this year as especially in my production a lot of
problems happened at the beginning which didn't’t allow me to go out
and record my actual production which meant I couldn't really start
production until a week later and although this problem occurred I used
this week to go back through all my old work and make improvements
as my idea changed very late on in the project so the work beforehand
made no sense to my Pre-Production and so that was all changed which
allowed me to add more to my current idea and understand what I was
going to really nee to make like the interviews, narration and the music
jingles. My entire production did not follow the production schedule at
all due to my recording being done so late into the weeks which gave me
a lot less time to edit and perfect my actual production.
If I had more time to produce my work I would have done more work to
my production as my visual is poor and just there to fill the space as it is
quite useless and also parts of my audio was different as some points
were very quiet compared to the rest and I would have liked to
understand why that is and improve it. I had even extra time now to go
back through my old work I may have done some more in Pre-
Production and created some planning for my visual like a colour
scheme to help my visual look a lot better and more professional to
match up with my productions professional theme.
8. Time Management
I did complete my work on time although I had some major setbacks
especially in production everything was in on time and my actual
product could definitely be a lot better but with only 2 weeks and a half
of actual production being done it was finished on time and to a fairly
good standard.
I think my products would have been improved a lot with additional
time as when I was creating my initial plans, proposal and research it
was all focused on my old idea of a comedy audio mockumentary but
during research I discovered that my main demographic would be the
older ages and so I would have found it hard to create something they
relate too in a comical way and so I had to change my idea which
evidentially made my previous work not make sense to any viewer and
so that needed to be changed and if I had extra time I could have
improved my changes to make the work better and more in depth. I
think my research would have benefitted a lot from extra time as my
experiments needed more work added to them as since my time
management was so poor and I didn't get my research in on time it feel
behind and so when I had the chance I rushed my experiments to finish
my research all together which did not help when it came to production
as I hadn't created good, helpful experiments and when I went back
through them they were too vague to use as a reference for my work I
production.
9. Technical Qualities
The similarities my product and the first existing product is that they both use
the idea of time passing with a music piece as since they're both audio
documentaries as such they cannot have much quite moments as the audience
would not know what is really happening due to the only sense being used is
hearing and so an audio product mostly has to be constant noise and this
existing product does this a lot better than mine although it is quite different to
my documentary as it comes across more like an audio play it still has a
professional side but keeps being entertaining which was the aim for mine
although it did not come out as entertaining I can use this existing product as an
example of how similar the two products are and also how dissimilar they are.
The similarities between my audio product and the second existing product is
that they are both made to be professional and entertaining to a specific type of
person as one is on Brexit and mine is on a countryside town which obviously
does not appeal to a younger audience as such due to the topics not being as
fun and the flow of the audio product not being quick paced to keep a younger
consumer from not being bored, as mine is quote slow paced and a gentle
flowing documentary just like the existing product I have chosen to compare it
too as both pieces of audio are quite similar in volume levels as due to problems
in recording my documentary sounded very quiet in some parts and loud in
others and the audio play is very quiet at times too which also links into to how
both are made to appeal to a certain audience which is generally a much older
and mature audience.
10. Technical Qualities
The differences between my audio documentary and the first existing product is
that the existing product I have chosen is fairly quick paced and loud which is
used to engage the audience and would appeal to a younger audience where as
mine has an imbalance of volumes as some parts are loud and other parts are
too quiet which effects the professionalism of the documentary. Another
difference in the existing products technical parts is that the flow of the entire
audio piece is quick paced due to the editing as it incorporates a lot of different
scenes in a quick succession as since the narrator is speaking quite quick and
loud the editing has to keep up with her as such what topic she is speaking
about as this makes the existing product much quicker and evidently more
enjoyable to listen into compared to mine which is quite slow and dull for an
audience of my age. The final difference would be that the existing product
doesn't have a specific age demographic and goes of the basis that you know
what the topic Is as such and that usually is a much more mature audience and
the audio piece is not made to appeal to a mature audience due to its quick
pace and loud, entertaining tone where as my product is appealing to a mature
audience and is made to appeal to them as my visual is quite calm and not to
extravagant and the pace of the audio is quite calm and so I believe mine
appeals more o my demographic compared to the existing products.
The differences between my product and the second existing product would be
that seeing as they both have serious tones this piece of audio does not have an
age demographic and instead the topic is appealing to a certain type of persons
with that interest, the differences also is that my product use quick edits
between speaking to emphasize the amount of interviews that I had done
compared to this audio piece as it has one interview all the way through but has
different cuts in-between it as this helps build its professionalism better than my
audio product.
11. Aural Qualities
If I could improve my work I would improve the editing in the interviews as some
parts still have my voice in them as this was a problem throughout the editing
process as my speaking clashes with part of their answers and so I would have
like to just remove that interview all together instead of cutting my voice out
and half their answer with it. I would also improve the volume quality in some
places as my interviews were recorded too quietly and when turned up a
buzzing sound could be heard so they had to stay quiet and I forgot to make
everything else quiet as I was rushing production a lot due too poor time
management and so if I was too improve any part of my work I would improve it
by adding more time to every part as my time management is poor.
The strengths of my audio documentary as a product would be the transitions
between each different piece of audio as I combined them together well as I
faded the music out and start speaking when the music begins to fade out which
is very similar to a normal radio show and my choice of music/jingle to help also
create the theme of a countryside, small radio show.
The weaknesses of my aural qualities would most definitely be the volume
levels as a lot of problems occurred in the editing stage with my audios volume
and it was a common problem pointed out to me in the feedback section and so
I would like to change that aswell as another weakness would be the cutting off
my voice as I would like to re-record the interviews and make sure I do not speak
throughout the answers as my voice interrupts a lot of answers which made for
a large problem in the final edit as I had to leave some parts of my speaking in
the interview section so the listener can hear the full answer.
12. Aural + Aesthetic Qualities
My documentary was not as creative as I wanted it to be from the beginning
but due to poor time management I had to change my idea to a regular
documentary about my home town which is not an interesting topic for a
teenager and so I struggles to understand what themes I should have created
etc. and so my project struggled to be a proper documentary s there was no
motive in the audio as most documentaries have a purpose and mine did not
and can be acknowledged when listening to the audio as in my feedback there
is multiple points where it is said that it need to be happier and less dull which
is frustrating at times as that is what I was going for but not over the top as it
has come of as I wanted to create a boring documentary that would appeal to a
mature audience but since it is only seen by teenagers it is not appealing and it
completely takes away the creative parts of the documentary and is a more
boring documentary.
My works visuals are poor due to no planning as I was so focused on other
parts of the project I forgot that I had to make a visual and so I had no colour
scheme and no research to compare mine too as most audio pieces have a
basic image in front or just a small piece like mine and so since there was no
planning and not much to take inspiration from my visual ended up looking
fairly basic and mostly boring.
The aspects of my audio I enjoy are mostly the fading in and out of my
different recordings as most of my interviews and everything else is faded and
cut perfectly and so it helps create the theme that my documentary is quite
professional which helps match the idea that it is apart of a radio show due to
the high quality.
13. Audience Appeal
I believe my audio documentary has appealed to the target audience as my
idea was to create an audio documentary for a small radio station that is
aimed at a much older and mature audience which did come as a struggled
due to me not being the main demographic I struggled to understand what
themes and ideas that would working in the documentary and not to
entertain me but a much older listener. The visual may appeal to an older
audience as I mad it to be quite basic and not to extravagant and so I chose a
calming colour as well as taking very basic and not too professional photos of
Market Weighton as the radio station I made it for was supposed to be quiet
and cringe worthy to a younger listener hence the title “The Bill and Bob
show” which would help infer to a viewer that the radio station is not a
popular show and its main demographic would be a mature audience and so I
believe my documentary would appeal to this audience as it is edited in a
way which is not fast paced and an older listener can enjoy it and not find it
juvenile.
The specific parts of my audio project that would appeal would obviously be
the visuals as it is quite a calm visual and nothing to bright and colorful which
could put an older person off. The actual topic of my project would appeal to
a more mature audience as Market Weighton is an old countryside town and
is full of old people and since it is very rural it would appeal to an older
person more than a big city. The theme of the entire audio could appeal to an
older member of the audience as it is edited to be quite calm and isn't a
quick paced, energetic documentary with a quick talking narrator which
would appeal to a teenager more than a mature audience.
15. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– Nice audio quality however there is a slight buzz in the background which could have been
improved upon
– I liked the professionalism in the documentary
– Lots of interviews and diversity of options which helps inform the listeners what other people
think and also helps make people in the community feel included and listened to.
– It was also interesting to listen to what everyone thinks about the area even though I know
nothing about it
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
– The interviews could be turned up a little bit and its much quieter than the music and the
main voice
– I suppose it isn't important but the still visual is very poorly made and maybe could have had a
few small things to make it look more professional.
– The main voice needs to sound less bored and more interested in what he is saying to give
more energy to the documentary
– It maybe would have been more impactful to do a visual documentary where you can see the
people being interviewed in their every day life and get a more authentic quality to the
documentary. This could have maybe had some cuts of the area to give a better idea of the
place they are talking about. However this is more of a nit-pick as it is more designed for a
radio
– Maybe a documentary designed for TV or YouTube would have been more interesting to me
personally as I don’t really listen to the radio at all these days
– It is difficult to make enough points about as a lot of what is going on is the same and maybe it
should have been mixed up a little bit with other topics or something to give it a little more
Varity
16. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I like how you have got information from a wide range of different people because it gives the
listener lots of different opinions to listen to rather then just one, which helps to make your product
more interesting.
– I like the use of music throughout your product making it more appealing to listen to.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
- I think your product could be improved if the transitions from one persons opinion to the other was
smoother because at some points people get cut off.
- I think your product could be improved if you talked about your own opinion as well and talk about
more topics with the people that you interviewed
17. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
• The introduction of the podcast is really well written, giving a clear idea of what is going to be featured in the
episode.
• The quality of the audio in the first segment is really good, clear and with little background noise.
• The responses you’ve chosen are appropriate to the podcast and show both positive and negative opinions of the
population, especially how for some people having that tight community feeling and being a small village out of
the way at the expense of traveling can be both a good and bad thing depending on the lifestyle of the person.
• Your comments to encourage answers from the people you interviewed are helpful, not interrupting what they
have to say.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The quality of the opening music has some static over it which could be removed.
– When you’re introducing the show it sounds like you’re saying insides, not insights
– The visual could have better image placement and better use of the space, as it’s very empty.
– The pauses when the person you interviewed have not been cut out, so there’s lots of uhhhh and um
– I think you could have held the interviews in a quieter space, reducing the background noise.
18. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
I agree with most of the feedback I received as it was very constructive as couple of points about my product
were very re occurring and so I understand that this is what needs to be improved as the difference in volume
is in need of improvement along with the visual as it is not professional enough.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
I disagree with some points made by a couple of people as there was points about how I spoke throughout the
feedback which I believe I can't help, and some points basically infer that it would have been better to have
been a visual documentary which is kind od the opposite to my entire idea and I believe since I chase a topic
which is aimed at an older audience and the feed back was from teenagers I believe that this is why the
product wasn't appealing enough to them.
19. Peer Feedback Summary
The changes I would have made to my product would have definitely been the problems with my visual aspects
and also the difference in the volume of the entire audio product as I should have focused more on the quality
of my audio and less about fitting all of my recordings in as I did focus too much on incorporating all my
interviews into the project which allowed me to forget about about the quality and focus on quantity. I would
have changed the visuals a lot more as it is poorly made and looks too basic and this is because I had no
planning towards making one as I had no colour scheme for it and no layout plans of how it would look and so
when it came to me having to create the visual I had to make it with no previous help from my planning and this
that could have why it looks so basic and not professional enough which is a large issue as my entire audio
documentary is made to feel professional as the concept was that the documentary is a segment of a radio
show which is aimed at the elderly so it isn't very big in the media world and doesn't have much listeners
although it is trying to be bigger than it really is with this documentary as such.
