1. Subjunctive is used in a noun clause that
follows certain verbs and expressions. The
subjunctive is used in its simple form only (“be” or
“verb base”). It doesn’t have present, past, or
future forms. The negative form of subjunctives is
“not + simple form”.
The following are certain verbs and expressions
followed by subjunctives.
• Suggest
• Insist
• Recommend
• Request
• Advise
• Demand
• Propose
• Ask
2. Notes :
1. The words “suggest”, “recommend”, “advise”,
“propose” can be used to suggest. When we
suggest a person do an action, we can use a
“that-clause”. In formal situations, “that” is
often left out.
Example: I suggest (that) you come here
around 2 o’clock.
2. “Should” is also possible after words “suggest”
and “recommend”.
Example: I suggest (that) you should visit a
dentist.
3. Now, see the following pattern and examples.

4. In the dialogs in Activity 9, Mrs. Rita asks,
“Can I get you some water?” to offer Dewi a
drink. Then, Andi asks, “Would you Iced tea
or coffee?” to offer something to Dewi. The
words ‘can’ and ‘would’ are modals. We can
use modals to make offers. A modal is always
followed by a verb base.
5. The following are several modals which
can be used to offer and the examples.
