WisePies
Instructional Design
Project Summary
I’ve added a Reader’s Digest version of my paper
O “WisePies LLC is a start-up company that is a new and unique
restaurant concept to New Mexico for fast casual dining joining
the ranks of Chipotle, Subway and other restaurants that allow
the consumer to build their food the way that they want it in a
fast and friendly environment. WisePies is personal gourmet
pizza made just the way you like it in under 5 minutes from start
to finish. WisePies dough, sauce and signature pizzas were
created from scratch by the esteemed chefs of the award
winning Vernon’s Hidden Valley Steakhouse. The quality is
unmatched, and the price point from $6-7 for all items, will keep
the consumer coming back time and time again. In addition to
traditional pizza dough and toppings, WisePies will offer the
more health conscious consumer options like whole wheat
dough, gluten free dough, and a whole range of healthy
vegetable toppings. Each restaurant will include a Coca Cola
Freestyle Machine which also allows the consumer numerous
drink options and is a big hit with children and families. All
stores will also have salads and cookie pie desserts.”
Hiring Teenagers
O Oh No!
O Teenagers can be a challenge because they don’t have the breadth and depth of
knowledge that adults possess
Behaviorism
O Behaviorism is the theory of learning based upon the
concept that all behaviors are obtained through
conditioning. The two main types are known as classical
conditioning and operant conditioning.
O Why not a combination of the two for WisePies? Behavioral
modification through a stimulus to produce a desired
response in conjunction with operant conditioning based on
positive reinforcement that leads to making a connection
between behaviors and their consequences.
O WisePies believes in positive reinforcement and not reward
and punishment. Rather than approaching learning in
terms of what can’t be accomplished it is their policy to
actively tell their employees what they can do.

you recall a time when either you or someone else on your team did not
contribute to a successful outcome? What would you have done differently?
O Use a mnemonic for TEAM.
O Such as T – Together E – Everyone A – Achieves M – More
O Create a visual aid such as a poster
Cognitivism
O Behavior at Work
O Without quality training and instruction many of the trainees will not be able to
successfully transfer their knowledge from one area of their life to their job. They
may not be able to make the connection.
O Teens don’t know how to be professional because no one has ever taught them
O Some of the things they will be trained on:
O SMILE…even when answering the phone
O If you are angry or in a bad mood they can feel that as well
O You are expected to be polite and courteous to our guests at all times
O Can you remember a time when you were given poor service?
O Your body language tells our customers a lot about you
O Do not roll your eyes – maintain eye contact
O Speak clearly and concisely and incomplete sentences
O When you are in a situation you are uncomfortable with, always get a manager involved.
Gagne’s Nine Steps
O Gain attention – Present Behavior at Work and Teamwork for Teens and the TEAM
mnemonic.
O Tell the learners the learning objective – during training they will be told of their
expectations. They will be expected to know the menu and be able to answer
general knowledge questions.
O Stimulate recall of prior learning – during training they will have to relate previous
experiences such as times they received poor customer service and how it made
them feel and what they would do differently.
O Present the stimulus – during training they will be involved in customer service role
playing scenarios to help them apply their new found skills to their job.
O Provide learning guidance – there will be structured real-world role playing
scenarios to help them learn how to deal with the various types of situations that will
arise.
O Elicit performance – there will be a soft opening with family and friends to provide
the employees with the experience of working in the restaurant in a semi-controlled
environment.
O Provide feedback – managers will coach the teens on how to handle themselves
O Assess performance - there will be a study guide, a pretest, and a final test.
O Enhance retention and transfer to other context – during training they will be
asked to connect previous experiences with the skills expected of them for this job.
They will then be asked to apply those experiences in the performance of their
duties.
Andragogy
O WisePies wants to be known as a corporation that mentors young people
O They want to provide an environment that develops their young employees’
leadership skills and guides them into adulthood.
O Allowing the employees to eventually train each other would give them the necessary
leadership skills.
O In turn they can provide valuable feedback to management on what they think works
and what doesn’t.
O Valuing your employees and engaging them in meaningful and positive ways has the
potential to motivate them to take ownership of their jobs and to actively look for
ways to grow in their positions
Transformative Learning
O A first job for a teen can be transformative
O Earning an income
O Money means autonomy
O First step into adulthood
OStephen Brookfield has developed a learning technique where he allows himself to
observe and be taught from his own experiences as an adult learner and applies these
observations to his thinking about the students’ experiences of teaching and learning
O. When developing materials for young employees it is important to approach the instructional
design from a teenager’s perspective
OMy motto during this project has been, “Never assume anything.”
OJust because an idea or a behavior is obvious to adults doesn’t always mean that it is obvious to
teens.
Social and Organizational
Learning
O This is an area in which I think the organizational structure of WisePies can be
examined
O WisePies wants to be known as a company that not only employs younger workers
but guides and molds them and prepares them for working in the business world
O Setting company policy and corporate culture begins now
O Chris Argyris’ and Donald Schon’s double-loop learning model can be implemented
O They will be encouraged to express their opinions if they think something can be
done better and how they would implement that change.
O Albert Bandura’s Social Learning theory centered on the importance of observational
learning, imitation, and modeling and SL has been called “a bridge between
behaviorist and cognitive learning because it encompasses attention, memory, and
motivation.”
O behaviors and attitudes that will be modeled by the adults running the restaurant and
the adults working at the WisePies restaurants will be expected to model proper,
professional behavior.
O I believe that WisePies is using systems thinking as a model for creating their
franchise. They are instituting policies and guidelines for an efficient and effective
work environment at the very beginning. They are stating their goals in clear concise
language that their employees can understand and they are open to creating an
environment where their employees of all ages can be heard.
Social and Organizational
Learning
O The operations manager wants to develop a social media policy that encourages
employees to use social media to promote the restaurant
O . She plans on instituting a controlled social media policy at work wherein the
employees can use their smartphones to log onto social networking sites and
encourage business or promote special events, etc.
O Wenger and Lave’s Communities of Practice are a natural fit for WisePies. In this
new situation A CoP will be created and the employees will be able to share their
previous knowledge, build upon it, and use their new knowledge base in their current
job.
O Dr. Gunwardena’s wisdom community or WisCom is a concept that I believe can be
utilized as WisePies grows. Since they have no formal eLearning structure to date,
creating one is not possible. However, as they grow I can see potential in creating a
WisCom that can be utilized by the corporation as a tool for change and growth.
Brain Based Approaches to
Learning
O There are only two theorists from Brain Based Approaches to Learning that I will
concentrate on for the final project
O These approaches are to help us when we actually perform the training and give us
the tools we need to reach all of our learners
O The first is Howard Gardner
O Gardner’s eight abilities are useful for the instructional designer and trainer. The abilities are:
Musical – rhythmic, Visual – spatial, Verbal – linguistic, Logical – mathematical, Bodily –
kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalistic. By knowing and understanding these
Multiple Intelligences, the trainer can better identify a learner’s strengths and then teach to that
strength. Multiple learning avenues can be provided so that all employees have an opportunity at
success.
O The second is Andreas Demetriou
O Demetrious’ Neo-Piagetian theory of cognitive development can also be applied to the
instructional design process
O Building upon Piaget’s theory, neo-Piagetian theorists believed that the sequencing and teaching
of the skills must also take into account the processing and working memory of the learner
O I think this is an important concept when creating a training curriculum to be implemented in a
company such as WisePies.
Project Design
O There are several things that the instructional design needs to accomplish.
O At a very basic level it must train employees to do their jobs
O Building on that, a good instructional design and training program tells employees
that the company they are working for values them and wants them to be successful
O In order to attract and keep employees, even teenagers, it must engage the
employees and teach them valuable skills. Teaching the employees what the need to
know and the expectations of WisePies helps in employee retention and cuts down
on hiring costs over the long term.
O It also acts as a foundation. I have put together spreadsheets of the products that
need to be ordered, the quantities, and what suppliers will be used. On the surface
this does not seem like instructional design work; however, this document is what will
be used to train the staff on the ordering procedures. This Excel spreadsheet
becomes a pivotal piece of the training process.
O Using the principles of Social and Organizational Learning, it is important to identify
the need for a digital infrastructure and then create that infrastructure so that
everyone can grow within the company and not just the creative talent.
O It is also important to use Systems Thinking to map the path the corporation will take.
Because it is a startup they can create an entirely new method for creating work
processes, for communication, and ultimately doing business. I believe that a good
instructional design that maps this for them can help them accomplish their goals.
Summary
O This course has been helpful for me to see how we move through the educational
process and that no one learning theory is more important than another
O In order for an instructional design program to be successful it must pull from many
different theories
O One of my goals in designing this was to incorporate the theories that I found to be
useful in creating a training program
O I believe that we move through a training program much in the same way we move
through the educational system
O We start by acquiring basic skills that can be strengthened using Behaviorist
techniques and then we build upon that with more complex skills, ideas, and
concepts
O Social and Organizational Learning is also important because it is the framework that
defines a corporation.
O Without a modern corporate structure, an organization will flounder
O Lastly, I think that the brain based approach pulls together all these threads and
themes because it looks at how the brain process information and how it translates
what we learn.

Andragogy O WisePies wants to be known as a corporation that mentors young people O They want to provide an environment that develops their young employees’ leadership skills and guides them into adulthood. O Allowing the employees to eventually train each other would give them the necessary leadership skills. O In turn they can provide valuable feedback to management on what they think works and what doesn’t. O Valuing your employees and engaging them in meaningful and positive ways has the potential to motivate them to take ownership of their jobs and to actively look for ways to grow in their positions

Transformative Learning O A first job for a teen can be transformative O Earning an income O Money means autonomy O First step into adulthood OStephen Brookfield has developed a learning technique where he allows himself to observe and be taught from his own experiences as an adult learner and applies these observations to his thinking about the students’ experiences of teaching and learning O. When developing materials for young employees it is important to approach the instructional design from a teenager’s perspective OMy motto during this project has been, “Never assume anything.” OJust because an idea or a behavior is obvious to adults doesn’t always mean that it is obvious to teens.

Social and Organizational Learning O This is an area in which I think the organizational structure of WisePies can be examined O WisePies wants to be known as a company that not only employs younger workers but guides and molds them and prepares them for working in the business world O Setting company policy and corporate culture begins now O Chris Argyris’ and Donald Schon’s double-loop learning model can be implemented O They will be encouraged to express their opinions if they think something can be done better and how they would implement that change. O Albert Bandura’s Social Learning theory centered on the importance of observational learning, imitation, and modeling and SL has been called “a bridge between behaviorist and cognitive learning because it encompasses attention, memory, and motivation.” O behaviors and attitudes that will be modeled by the adults running the restaurant and the adults working at the WisePies restaurants will be expected to model proper, professional behavior. O I believe that WisePies is using systems thinking as a model for creating their franchise. They are instituting policies and guidelines for an efficient and effective work environment at the very beginning. They are stating their goals in clear concise language that their employees can understand and they are open to creating an environment where their employees of all ages can be heard.
  • 13. Social and Organizational Learning O The operations manager wants to develop a social media policy that encourages employees to use social media to promote the restaurant O . She plans on instituting a controlled social media policy at work wherein the employees can use their smartphones to log onto social networking sites and encourage business or promote special events, etc. O Wenger and Lave’s Communities of Practice are a natural fit for WisePies. In this new situation A CoP will be created and the employees will be able to share their previous knowledge, build upon it, and use their new knowledge base in their current job. O Dr. Gunwardena’s wisdom community or WisCom is a concept that I believe can be utilized as WisePies grows. Since they have no formal eLearning structure to date, creating one is not possible. However, as they grow I can see potential in creating a WisCom that can be utilized by the corporation as a tool for change and growth.

Brain Based Approaches to Learning O There are only two theorists from Brain Based Approaches to Learning that I will concentrate on for the final project O These approaches are to help us when we actually perform the training and give us the tools we need to reach all of our learners O The first is Howard Gardner O Gardner’s eight abilities are useful for the instructional designer and trainer. The abilities are: Musical – rhythmic, Visual – spatial, Verbal – linguistic, Logical – mathematical, Bodily – kinesthetic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalistic. By knowing and understanding these Multiple Intelligences, the trainer can better identify a learner’s strengths and then teach to that strength. Multiple learning avenues can be provided so that all employees have an opportunity at success. O The second is Andreas Demetriou O Demetrious’ Neo-Piagetian theory of cognitive development can also be applied to the instructional design process O Building upon Piaget’s theory, neo-Piagetian theorists believed that the sequencing and teaching of the skills must also take into account the processing and working memory of the learner O I think this is an important concept when creating a training curriculum to be implemented in a company such as WisePies.
  • 15. Project Design O There are several things that the instructional design needs to accomplish. O At a very basic level it must train employees to do their jobs O Building on that, a good instructional design and training program tells employees that the company they are working for values them and wants them to be successful O In order to attract and keep employees, even teenagers, it must engage the employees and teach them valuable skills. Teaching the employees what the need to know and the expectations of WisePies helps in employee retention and cuts down on hiring costs over the long term. O It also acts as a foundation. I have put together spreadsheets of the products that need to be ordered, the quantities, and what suppliers will be used. On the surface this does not seem like instructional design work; however, this document is what will be used to train the staff on the ordering procedures. This Excel spreadsheet becomes a pivotal piece of the training process. O Using the principles of Social and Organizational Learning, it is important to identify the need for a digital infrastructure and then create that infrastructure so that everyone can grow within the company and not just the creative talent. O It is also important to use Systems Thinking to map the path the corporation will take. Because it is a startup they can create an entirely new method for creating work processes, for communication, and ultimately doing business. I believe that a good instructional design that maps this for them can help them accomplish their goals.

Summary O This course has been helpful for me to see how we move through the educational process and that no one learning theory is more important than another O In order for an instructional design program to be successful it must pull from many different theories O One of my goals in designing this was to incorporate the theories that I found to be useful in creating a training program O I believe that we move through a training program much in the same way we move through the educational system O We start by acquiring basic skills that can be strengthened using Behaviorist techniques and then we build upon that with more complex skills, ideas, and concepts O Social and Organizational Learning is also important because it is the framework that defines a corporation. O Without a modern corporate structure, an organization will flounder O Lastly, I think that the brain based approach pulls together all these threads and themes because it looks at how the brain process information and how it translates what we learn.
